  • How can you tell whether you actually have a Shipster subscription from one of these offers?

I've signed up for the previous two free-12-month offers (Cotton On and …Aus Post?), and I've received nothing over email to indicate that my subscription has started.

do a dummy shop with Kogan and see if it applies

      • Thanks, will give it a shot.

Kogan has a free shipping promo at the moment, so I don't think this will work. Might need to try Myer.

Chemist warehouse also has a quick 1-page checkout that checks as you enter your email address.

The Cotton One worked for me, although initially I was expecting it not to because I didn't provide my PP or CC information.

    • I got a confirmation email for the Cotton On one. You can test it by adding any random item (at least $25) to your Cotton On cart and seeing if it says free shipping when you proceed to the checkout page (make sure you're logged in with the same email address you used for the offer).

      • Weird. I signed up to the Cotton On offer and never received any confirmation.

    • i just emailed them and they told me my subscription and expiry date

how long can they give this away for free before their bank runs dry?
Unless they're charging the retailer at cost…

Shipster seems to have been a failure for Australia Post. They’re desperately trying to attract users, so they can attract more retailers, so they can grow it into something viable.

Right now, it’s a bit of a joke. I have it, but I’ve only used it once. It has a $25 minimum, but most retailers who participate have free shipping on orders over $50 anyway.

So, for the stores I use, it really is just for items where the cost is between $25-50. That’s a narrow window for an order to fall into.

Even for stores like Kogan which don’t have free shipping, it doesn’t apply to bulky items. But most items I’d buy from Kogan are bulky ones (TVs, kitchen appliances, etc).

It’s just too limited to offer any value as a paid product.

I think people are being too sceptical here. For starters, it's only "free" for a few months, 12 through deals like this, which don't circulate terribly widely (ozbargainers being an exception.) Retailers are probably subsidising with bulk purchase agreements - which is probably how they negotiate their pre-existing free postage. At some point, their old contracts will start to expire and smaller retailers will drop free shipping, the 12 month free subs will be up, and AusPost will start collecting cash. Australia might be a smaller market, but deleivery subscription is a tried and tested model. It's new but I think they will grow.

But to be worth paying for, it needs to be valuable.

With Amazon Prime, you order a $10 CD or a $5 adapter and get free shipping. You just don’t think. Shipping is free.

When I was in the US, I used it a few times per week, usually for orders under $10. Need a USB cable? Just use Prime. Need a new pair of socks? Prime.

With Shipster, you need to get up to $25, but not exceed $20 in postage costs, and most of the participating retailers have free shipping on orders over $50 anyway.

The benefits are marginal. Whereas with Prime, they’re clear.

        • You know the retailers dont pay for shipping if someone uses shipster.

However lets say it costs 5000 to implement thats about 1000 customers who need to use shipster before it breaks even.

Retailers just think the service will die before that point.

I had to clear cache and cookies to get it to work at Chemist Warehouse. It's a weird setup with no email confirmation that you are registered or any way to check when the 12 month trial is up on the Shipster site.

  • Does it work for existing subscribers?

You can also get a 12 month free trial direct from the Shipster web site.

I think this is like my fourth free shipster subscription. Would be hilarious if they stack.
