For $999 you can buy the newer and improved Samsung S9 Plus, and it's local outright stock too.

I have the S8 Plus… good phone but exceedingly poor fingerprint scanner placement. its actually faster for me to unlock the phone using the pattern lock than it's biometrics.

Agree with this. Frankly I'm pretty disappointed with this phone. Cost a bomb and it's not lived up to the hype. Apart from the camera it's just merely OK.

      • Same with every phone really. Novelty wears off fast and then you wonder why it costs so much. In the end all I use a phone for is emails, text/calls and the occasional photo. Smartphones have been good for years now, most people are happy to hang onto their old devices.

I used to hang onto my phones for about 2-3 years but as of late I'm now more of an annual upgrader.

However I upgrade not because I want but because I need to — mainly because the battery life sort of deteriorates and you have no way to replace it (warranty doesn't cover the degradation of consumable parts), so buying a new phone and selling off the old one is generally the most hassle free way around it.

I really wish companies would stop trying to make thin fashionable phones. Just make us something that's a little thicker and have a removable battery pack please.

        • @scrimshaw: Yeah I hate the built in battery. You can replace it yourself quite cheaply though, no way I would pay $120 for Samsung to do it. I hate the way the phone business is, it's planned obsolescence and I don't want to support it. I try to hang onto my phones for at least 3 years.

        • @scrimshaw: Precisely why manufacturers will keep phones thin and advances in better battery life will happen at a crawling pace for this category. Apple/Samsung etc want you to be an annual upgrader; it keeps the price of handsets stable and ensures you become locked into the money making machine. The days of a removable battery pack in flagship phones are pretty much dead and buried IMO.

        • @scrimshaw: Precisely why I'm still sticking to the trusted S5, not sure what I'll do if/when it dies

I dont use fingerprint but think this is the best phone ive had since nokia n95

      • Its a very nice toy when you add swipe gestures from side panel and disable the lock screen (if security is not a big deal for you).

Love a double tap to sleep.

    • I rarely use the fingerprint scanner as well, like it but my screen has a really obvious 'burnt in' image which is really obvious in light colored backgrounds :(

    • the newer and improved Samsung S9 Plus
AU gets the Exynos 9810 variant (US gets the SD845) and that chipset has performance issues and battery drain not seen on its SD counterpart.

      • That's strange then. I have two Galaxy S7's — one American one with Snapdragon and one UAE version with a Exynos. The Exynos version of Galaxy S7 lasts quite a lot longer than my American one.

Samsung must've dropped the ball on the new Exynos CPU's.

        • The issue seems to be more apparent in the S9 and S9+, not previous versions of the phone (in fact, if I remember correctly, I think it was the exact opposite, where in previous Galaxy phones, it was reported that the SnapDragon variant performed worse - dont quote me on it though).

        • Out of interest, why do you have so many phones?

Meh - $725.24 for Black from allphones_online Ebay with PROXY code. 24 Months(AU) Warranty & GST Invoice for TRS.

  • Also available from Mobileciti for $829 if you really must have a walk in store: https://www.mobileciti.com.au/samsung-galaxy-s8-64gb-grey-op…

    Hi All

Following is my experience and my 'opinions':

Experience - bought an S8+ from Mobileciti and an S8 from Allphones in the last week, via the eBay PROXY code.
Both phones were delivered on the second working day after ordering and both brand new and appear Aussie models (note, models and stock are two different things).

'I think these companies are related, if not the same. According to the receipts I received they are both located in Parramatta and the invoices were created by the same person (initials DZ)'

I was confident buying, as both Mobileciti and Allphones have 100% Positive feedback on eBay and they seem to have a good reputation on OzBargain.

'The current price of $725.24 for Black from allphones_online eBay(eBay.com.au), as posted by mrfarenheit above, is a great deal. This is a saving of $172.76 on the JB Hi-Fi deal'

I up graded because my son's S2 (which he inherited from me as his first phone) was dying so he now gets my trusty S5 which is still going strong after 3-4 years.
And my daughter's old fruit phone (inherited as a first phone) has apparently gone rotten - so she now gets the other S5 purchased at the same time as mine. It also has never had any problems.

Both S5s have their original batteries and I'm not worried by the built in batteries in the S8 and S8+
I mostly run my rechargeables down to single figures, then recharge up to 100%. 'Maybe it helps, don't know the technicalities'. I've never needed to buy a replacement rechargeable battery for any of my devices.

The S8+ is certainly a step up from my old S5. So many extra features it's worth going through the Samsung Oz website to look up what's possible. For example I can pick up the phone and put my finger on the scanner on the way and it immediately unlocks. 'I think the finger lock is just a matter of getting used to. Not too difficult to master'.

Speaking of unlocking - it has a feature called SmartLock where it stays unlocked in a trusted location (eg, home, which is set via the Google maps app) and/or while it detects that it is on your body (uses motion detector apparently). So many options, many of which are similar to the old S5. It's just a matter of checking out what's available in the different (and sometimes new) features and then using the ones that suit you best.

Anyway, hope this helps - The End ;-)
    Cheers MM
