Lenovo P8 assuming you can still get them.
Can I use my existing play store apps on the Lenovo? I heard somewhere there had been some issue with them.
The majority will be fine.
Just noticed that OzBargain refers to this tablet as Lenovo Tab3 8 Plus

At sub-$300 I can't think of a better option than the Lenovo Tab; if you can find another tablet on a (steep) sale that might also bring them under that mark. Other option is to look at a refurb iPad - they keep their performance up pretty well and you can often find them for quite cheap compared to new models.

maybe a second hand tablet? iPad 2 around $100..Internet/search, netflix/youtube (all depend of your internet connection).
Gumtree if you don't mind second-hand. Usually best prices there and your 10 year old shouldn't notice a difference.
Samsung galaxy tab s1 or s2 should cover everything nicely until they graduate.
+1 for the Lenovo. Also look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab A. Can't go wrong with either given your requirements.
