I've been looking at 1tb mSATA drives for a while, this is the cheapest I think I've ever seen one. A Samsung EVO 860 1tb for $307.12. Usually they're around $350ish.

More expensive than the 2.5 drives, especially with some of the crazy MX500 prices we've seen recently! But if your Laptop doesn't take 2.5 or M.2, this may be your only choice.

I purchased one for my Early-2013 Retina Macbook Pro. Paired with an adapter off eBay, it's cheaper than buying a custom OWC or Transcend SSD.

  How does the speed of this compare to the SATA M.2 model?

    I believe it's identical. Though there has been better deals on the SATA M.2 model. Samsung appear to be one of the only brands to still manufactuer mSATA, while there's a bit of competition in the M.2 drives.

    I have experienced overheating (speed slow downs) on the mSATA cards before when doing extended writes, but that was an older 850EVO. Still, I think it is easier to buy and apply heat sinking to M.2 cards than to mSATA cards, if sustained speed is really critical.
