  • Make sure you get an all inclusive quote. I've come across many, in fact most companies that will give me a rock bottom quote but when the contractor rings or rocks up, there is a lot of additional cost.

Most will tell me the pitch of my roof means I need a custom subframe to prop it up. This is BS but they will try "sun angle" or "water run off". Either that or they'll use the "unsupported roof sructure" and quote additional time for manouvering an unsafe roof.

Of course it's all BS because I have the engineer's drawing and the roof was engineered for solar panels.

Looking at the reviews, the earliest review is for Feb 2017 - so the reviews are mainly around being happy with installation and the price - but this doesn't have a performance component. Personally, I think it's too cheap for a quality install. I would pass.

A cheap solar system is worth nothing if it doesn't produce anything or is just installed under shade. It becomes an expensive paper weight that makes you feel that you got a good deal, but doesn't reduce your electricity bill. And if the company isn't around in 2 years their warranty becomes meaningless as well. They may even be using panels that are due to be removed from accreditation - so trying to offload them quick.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about this company and have not conducted any due diligence - but the price just seems too good to be true. I wouldn't buy a car for half the market price. Nor would I buy a solar system for half the market price.

    • half the market price.

This is OzBargain, we want everything to be at least 50% off! (Providing it is actually 50% off, not 50% off workmanship/quality!)

  • I'd be wary of Longi. Longi has no Australian Office so for warranty claims, you are at the retailer/importers mercy. I stayed away for this reason from Longi and went with Jinko.

Price is OK but not a bargain - I paid in April 2018 $3400 for a 6.48kw system (24 Jinko Panels, Solax X1 inverter). Jinko panels cost more than the Longi panels. From the Solar company I used, they were charging $3100 for a 6.6kw Longi system.

Prices have dropped recently significantly so I wouldn't blindly follow smatters' advice. Many companies are pricing around this point now. I had another quote on the same system with a different company and the best they could do was $4400 and openly said that they need to make more on the labour as they use three workers to install).

BTW I have also discovered that some big name providers are paying next to nothing for the STCs. Two very well known retailers were only paying $28 per stc - I got $36 from the retailer I used. That would make a significant difference in the out of pocket cost for the customer.

    • Thanks for your input @Alister

May i know if the quotes you have mentioned are for Vic?

Also what is STC? Is it feed-in tariff?

      • No worries. I'm in Brisbane but pricing is pretty much comparable nationally now (maybe not so much for TAS and WA).

STCs are not feed-in tariff - it's what some retailers describe as the government rebate.

The above is an easy to understand explanation of STCs.
You can usually do slightly better if you don't assign the STCs to the retailer for an up front discount. That being said, you then need to sell them yourself which isn't difficult to do but another chore on your list.

  • Why not pay a little more for a local company selling brand name products who have a chance of still being in business if you need to make a warranty claim?

    • I've seen plenty of local and big name solar companies go bust since 09.
      It's just so unpredictable.

  • I get the impression these solar panel installer companies act similar to Persian rug sellers by their ads on TV.

Always "SAVE$$$ before Deadline when something ends or not valid any more SCARE TACTICBOO!!

Announcer is almost yelling at you from the tv speaker… then they repeat it again in case you didn't catch it

"SAVE$$$ before Deadline when something ends or not valid any more SCARE TACTICBOO!!BOO
"SAVE$$$ before Deadline when something ends or not valid any more SCARE TACTICBOO!!BOO

There's a saying about an eskimo selling blank cheques to blind donkeys, but I don't quite remember it. "SAVE$$$ before Deadline when something ends or not valid any more SCARE TACTICBOO!!

Why spend so much time in saying so little?
      Thanks for the input man.

      • My point is, if you haven't been looking for a Persian rug, why would you buy now if it sounds like a good deal

  • Definitely Nay! Read after sales reviews.
