    What's the price bro?

    • +1

      Sorry! Fixed!

  • +9

Wtf is a smart rice cooker? You put the rice and water and turn it on.

    • +2

That's too much for some people.

    • +1

Fair call. Depends how much you value perfectly cooked rice. Many YouTube videos on the topic. :)

The fact that this little guy removes the need for pre-soaking lentils for soups etc will make it a useful little gadget I hope!

      • +3

It's very good at speeding up the pre soak. Amazing price.

    • +1

      Fuzzy logic

  • +2

Bought one in the Mother’s Day sale on amazon for $120.
    Seems to work well.
My biggest complaint is that the display is on the lid, so when the lids open it’s back there somewhere.
I believe tefal has another model 45 in 1 or something where the lid part doesn’t include the display

    • 45 in 1 doesn't do beans but it does have a better design if you need to see the screen.

  • " delayed-start (up to 24h) functions "

so it is good idea to have rice under water for hours before start cooking it?

    • +1

yes if possible - presoaking for at least a few hours to overnight seems to make the grains cook more evenly in my experience

      • +1

I've also heard that it's good to soak for >1hr and then wash the rice to remove the levels of pesticides (particularly arsenic) found in commercially produced rice.

That doesn't really help on a timer though :D

        • That's mainly a problem with cheap imported rice. Definitely soak it for a few hours before cooking.

But I don't bother with Australian brands like SunRice. They undergo constant testing for arsenic and there haven't been any reported problems I'm aware of.

        • @marlor:

Just make sure it's locally grown rice as Sun Rice sells imported rice as well

        • +1

          @cheapbloke:

Yep. I usually just grab the Medium Grain rice in the red packaging - it's Australian grown.

        • @marlor:

          Koala rice is also Australian.

        • Pesticide should be on the shell of the rice. If it's on the outside of rice, wash it quickly may dilute it but soak it for long, rice will absorb it.
If it's inside the rice might as well don't eat it. What do you eat then? Flour, you can't even wash it unless you are making gluten.
Pre Soaking rice could make better cooked rice and wash rice before cooking can reduce stickiness.
Do people think before they believe it?!

    • It does more than just cook rice.

  • Anyone know how this compares to the Japanese rice cookers like Zojirushi?

    • I wouldn't imagine it's anywhere near that league for cooking rice. But it may be worth a look if you're interested in the other functions.

    • +1

Get the Korean Cuckoo brand if you are looking for a decent rice cooker… It cooks perfect rice and build quality is so so good! I switched from Zojirushi to Cuckoo. Couldn't bear to have the voltage convertor sitting on the benchtop for the Zojirushi(mine was a Japan made model).

      • Not to mention Cuckoo have much nicer, more modern designs. I can't wait to get one :D

  • got one of these, I wouldn't dare to pay RRP these days but got it @ roughly 150. does the job but why pay for settings you don't use?

something to think about anyway, cant complain

  • It doesn't seem to say anywhere the capacity. I just checked, and it's listed as a 4L capacity on the Tefal website.

Which, if true, would make it a huge 20 cup cooker (Tiger's 20 cup commercial models are 3.6L).

But from the pictures, it doesn't look anywhere that size.

So I thought I'd check the size. Amazon has it listed as: "7 x 10 x 7 cm". Hmmm… OK.

    • +1

Tefal 5L is 10 cups. So it'll be 8 cups.

      • Bizarre. So they use a totally different system for reporting capacity than every other rice cooker on the market.

Even cheapo Kambrook ones report a 6 cup capacity as being 1.2L.

        • It's not just a rice cooker. You can make entire meals in it if you want. That capacity is bowl size not end rice cooking result. If you're just after a rice cooker go for the 45 in 1. This does beans and legumes.

        • +1

          @wolfshooter:

          Yeah, but the 45-in-1 isn't $79.

      • Thanks for the info. I was getting confused. My current Toshiba is 10 cups and I was for a similar one, but at this price I think 8 cups will do.

    • -1

It says rice cooker. Not rices cooker. Notice the plural? It only cooks one grain of rice.

      • +1

        I'm not sure a "7 x 10 x 7 cm" rice cooker would even manage that.

  • -1

    Stick to me spuds!

  • should i get this if i have a cook4me?

    • No and if your asking this question it's a no too :)

  • +1

Thanks OP. Got one. My 4 year old Toshiba just broke yesterday. It works fine but the clip that holds the lid down has broken :-(.

  • +3

I have this rice cooker, purchased from Amazon during the mothers day sales.
Cooks rice perfectly as far as I am concerned. Bake and slow cook functions also work without issue. Non stick bowl is great quality, only need hot water and cloth to clean.

Apart from that the menu system could be improved and have more options, it was difficult to work out you have have to hold down buttons for 5 seconds to turn off or cancel keep warm function. Apart from this no other issues.

  • I've got the "45 in 1" and I mainly use it to cook Yogurt and porridge - which it does well. It also does a good job of stew if you have time. The only real issue I have is that the bowl traps the smell of what you are cooking which is fine for things that don't smell much but can be a pain for stews and curries. I have also bought myself a Breville Fast Slow Pro which is a pressure cooker as well as slow/saute/simmer, etc cooker, which is great for making stews/curries/soups etc. (However, the smell could still be an issue for highly aromatic dishes). Apparently this cooker is not so good for Yogurt and Porridge so between the two of them I have a good pair of cookery appliances.

The problem I have the rice cookery function with the 45 in 1 is it doesn't tell you how long it will take to cook the rice, it just gets on with it and beeps when it is ready. It seems to produce acceptable rice but I'm certainly no expert on how good this is.

    • Doesn't it show a countdown timer close to the end, once it works out how much wwter is left to evaporate? My old Tefal 704 did that as does this rk900.

      • Certainly haven't noticed it doing that but might be worth looking at if we use it again. It tends to take too long so we just do our rice in the microwave rice cooker. Then again, I do like gluggy rice :)

        • Ah ok. I believe it has a quick cook function, but doubt it would be faster than the microwave.

        • @wolfshooter: You have inspired me to try it again though for plain rice. We now do our Risotto in the Breville Fast Slow Pro in pressure cooker mode - pretty good for a simple method of Risotto cooking. The "45 in 1" makes it more like Paella in that the bottom rice is cooked to "crunchy" consistency.

        • @try2bhelpful: cool. If you leave the rice in the Tefal on keep warm after it cooks, it will dry it out even more. Just open the lid and give it a stir after a few minutes to spread the heat, etc… Great thing about these rice cookers is that you can also cook with them. I often saute onions and garlic inside on high heat mode, then add the uncooked rice, raw chopped zucchini, corn, mushrooms, water and stock and set it to make the rice. No need to use other pans or the stove so clean up is easy!

  • Best rice cooker I've ever bought is a pressure cooker. Cooks just like the rice cookers from Japan in half the time.

    • +3

      Brand model?

    • With our Breville Fast Slow Pro it does good pressure cooker risotto. Not as good as proper Italian stuff but I don't need to put in any effort either and it is certainly as good as the way I make it with the traditional method.

  • +1

Thank you. Got one as spare. I have Toshiba multi-functions cooker for 7 years and still perfect conditions. For this price I can't resist.

  • In comparison, how many times better would rice taste if cooked in this >$400 Tiger branded one https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/390726 similar? lol

  • +1

    Oz… Asianbargained!!!
    FYI I am asian too.

    • I don't believe the name unless I get to see the picture of the cats.

  • Isn't the reason you wash / rinse white rice to get the talc powder off of it?

    • +2

      Starch.

  • Anyone who received their item want to comment on how it turned out in making various dishes?

    • +1

I made white rice with it on the weekend and I freaking love it!! Massive upgrade on my crappy arse Kambrook which always had rice stuck on the bottom. It was not soggy and didn't stick to the bowl. The way it tells you the steps for recipes is extremely cool. For example to make chickpeas you put in the portions, and it will tell you how many chickpeas to put into the soaking basket, how much water to put in, when to take it out and rinse, how long it'll take etc… step by step!! Very happy with it :) Great buy for the price!!
