Can never have too many kitchen timers…

  • i don't have anything smart at home

what can this do alone ?

    • +1

ask for the time, news or weather? without touching your phone :)
edit: Time to me to buy one :)

      • Just started to play with my home mini as part of a phone bundle, and it's been great! I'm quite invested into the google ecosystem so it works great. Besides the music streaming abilities, timer, and other regular features, I've been using it for finding my phone around the house, it will make the phone ring! Usually I had to get my wife's phone to call mine. Also very useful that you can tell it to add events to your google calendar and also add/remove things from your shopping list. I'm sure there's much more but that's been awesome for me thus far.

What I haven't figured out is how to get it to play netflix on my smart TV running Android, not sure how to get that working yet.

    • +1

Other than what boomramada said, it's also a pretty decent speaker on it's own for the price!

      • can it play songs from youtube on it own , or do i need to chromecast it from laptop/phone

        • Yep you can hook up most streaming services to it through your phone, and then just say "Play XXXX on Youtube Music" etc.

For example, I just say "Play Music on Spotify" and it starts playing random music, or I can specify a certain song. You can set up the accounts in the app.

        • @doweyy:

          Thanks.

what about normal youtube clip over laptop ?

I don't have any streaming service on phone

        • @phunkydude:

Umm I'm not 100% sure unfortunately as I haven't tried that yet to the GHM, but I hope someone else chimes in ASAP.

I could imagine it would work, similar to streaming to a chromecast from Youtube but to a GHM instead.

        • @doweyy: yeah we had the option to cast a YouTube video to our Google Home Minis, noticed it last night cause it seemed a bit strange. But there is a usecase for it.

        • +1

          @theguyrules:

Awesome, thank you for the clarification :)

        • +1

@phunkydude: If your computer can cast to another device, yes.

But you can tell your GHM to connect to Spotify or Tunein and play music. If you have a subscription you can play specific songs otherwise just an artists channel.

I suggest doing some research online about whether it would be useful for you.
          https://support.google.com/googlehome/answer/7130274?hl=en-A…

        • You can also cast to it from your phone apps eg Bubbleupnp, and PC.

        • @SnowDragon: Tunein is great. A lot of stations were geoblocked a few months ago tho. A vpn can get around that, but there are so many stations it is really a non issue.

It mines data for google - that is it's main function

      • +1

        It mines data for google

Yes, their collection data to determine the optimum time for cooking cake…

        • +1

I imagine it is more your movements, if you hit a lot of cooking sites, or online shopping, or research mountain bikes, whatever. Google is very good at building profiles of people from their online data usage. Being able to get more personal detail than what they'd normally get from a keyboard or touch screen is a bonus. That is why you get ads that are usually something you're interested in. Or birthday notices from businesses. Or advertising for school related stuff when your kids are about to return to school at the start of the school year. Ads from maccas because you often eat there (maccas gets this info from your phone as soon as you enter their stores). Some ways the collected data is used is obvious, other ways it isn't. And the whole data collection thing is still evolving. 20 years ago I don't think anyone could have guessed that google would be the powerhouse it is today. Who knows how all the information on us will be used. Their profiling can probably predict your habits better than you can right now, and quite easily.

        • @poohduck: It sure is great to get info adjusted to suit. Makes it so much easier than dealing with crap I am not interested in.

        • @Major Mess: I imagine there are lots of benefits to these things - so long as people understand the costs, it's all good :)

  • +1

Damn good price but I really enjoy my Echo dot even though this is probably better. I love being able to tell my Echo to play my Audible collection when I'm in my room. Other than that, I'm not a massive user of smart speakers.

  • +11

Nice. This will go well next to my 2nd echo dot. That's still in the box.

    • +3

You are an inspiration for ozbargain group..

  • +1

Good price, but don't need Third one.

    • My second one was in it's box for about 5 months before I decided to put it in the bedroom.

    • Yes you do… for broadcasting. :)

  • Finally got one.

  • +2

Got lazy and purchased one from JB for $49. Too lazy too return and purchase this.

      Licence & registration please…

  • thanks OP, been contemplating picking some up for $49, glad I waited.

  • +3

Still dont think i have any real use for this and dont quite get why so popular.

    • I have it integrated into my smart home setup to control various things like lights. Also good to play tunes.. Hey Google play playlist/song/artist on Spotify.

    • I've got my two Home Mini's set up with two Chromecast Audios plugged into hifi systems… Multiroom audio streaming is pretty sweet and is seamless betweeen bedroom/lounge/kitchen.

    • +1

Neither do I. Been trying to justify getting one, but don't really have a use. At this point in time it's still a niche gimmick to me.

When I eventually get some smart tech (LED lights, Blackbean & Xiaomi devices) to automate my home is when I'll need one.

    • Mudic, casting, reminders, timers, jokes, weather, answer questions, quizzes? :)

  • 10$ for postage/even pickup.

    • Without eBay Plus. Sign up for a free trial if you haven't to get free shipping.

    • Hence the following statement in the OP's description: "Please Note: In order to get this price you need an eBay plus membership, a one month trial is available here thanks to syba if you don't already have a trial."

  • Excellent price.

  • Thanks OP

  • +1

These are great for controlling a Chromecast or a setting a few up with synchronised audio. The power supply is a bit obnoxious though, being a large circle that doesn't play nicely with a standard double power point

  • Thanks OP. Been waiting for the prices to come down before I get some more.

Hopefully these are the actual AU models and not imported stock that are sitting in a AU warehouse.

    • Seller claims "100% Authentic Australian Stock". I'll return mine if that's not the case.

      • How to verify once received that they are from Au stock

        • Model number should be GA00216-AU on the box for the H0A model.

    • Authentic Australian Stock -

      • Yea, it says AU stock, but like I said, it could very well be an import sitting somewhere in an AU warehouse.

Another seller a little while ago was claiming they were selling AU models. Turns out it was a grey import.

        • what is the difference between AU and grey import?

Guess you can return it with free shipping if you don't like it

        • @pinkybrain: Some features aren't available worldwide.

For example, at the moment, the US model with it's US voice allows for continued conversations. Whereas the AU voice doesn't allow for that. Unless you switch to the US voice, but some people are having trouble setting that on the different models.

There were other features not available specifically to the models that were being sold as a grey import which took quite a while via firmware updates to be added.

Either way though, it should be fine. I still bought two and will see how it goes :)

        • @Goldfire: AU Voice works with Continued Conversation as of a few weeks ago.

        • @bbqandbargains: AU voice hasn't worked for me and many others on Reddit since the start. The option is there, but it's still only working correctly for US voice:

          https://i.imgur.com/HniODFT.png

As of 26th of June, Google has mentioned that they are "investigating".

Even if I toggle the option on, it simply doesn't work on any of my Home Mini's.

Edit: Here's one of the many threads on Reddit about the issue: https://old.reddit.com/r/googlehome/comments/8y62x6/continue…

  • No Black/Charcoal :(

    • would avoid as it displays more dust :)

  • Now out of Black but a fair few white ones left.
Finally bought one of these great little data mining devices as its now too cheap to pass up. So from reading the above comments if I dont have anything to automate in the house best to start looking for a chromecast deal? Other wise its still an ok price for a speaker that I dont need to turn on I suppose. Maybe I can ask it what it can do when it arrives as opposed to googling the old fashioned way

  • +1

PS great work Doweyy! A fantastic post for us lazy folk who probably would not have bought it if the ebay plus deal link was not delivered to us on a platter, so thanks for the ongoing great work mate

You ate stupid to buy this stalking device

    • +2

Yes I ate stupid for breakfast

    • Clever marketing by google - they’ve managed not only to get people to willingly bring a spy device into their home, but also to give them money for it.
      Clever google.

    • +1

Google already knows everything about me from reading my emails and my lurid search history. Knowing I want to turn up the volume on the TV isn't exactly ground breaking information.

If they wanted to spy on everyone, they could just collect data from your microphone in your phone, like some Chinese phones do.

    • I got nothing to hide from CIA NSA FBI or any of those three-letter agencies so why should I worry about them listening to my everyday non-senses??? The way I see it, it's them who's gonna be wasting their time listening to all my first-world problem whinges. It's a small price to pay to have the convenience of accessing multiple devices in my home via Google Home Mini.

    • @paligu .. oh look at you.. you must be sooo important that google want to hear your day to day activities and secrets.. /s

      • That's not the sort of stuff they record. It's not people listening in, it's bots recording data. Your daily online patterns. Your buying patterns, search patterns, shopping patterns, everything. From this they build a profile fairly easily. Now it's mostly used to steer you into doing business with businesses that pay google for preferential treatment. However, who knows what the future of all this minutae data of individuals will be? My knowledge now is very limited, so I'm sure there's much more going on - all these connections. Facebook is regularly in the news because of how it uses your data (mostly selling it on). A database used by government agencies in Australia was recently hacked - but this happens all the time: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=government+database+hacked&t=ffab&…. Why are these databases constantly getting hacked? There must be money in it for someone. You may not hold much value to your details, but business does.

        • right.. and you think you are safe at this point in time?.. i guess for people who might have criminal business would be scared shitless.

  • +1

Still dont see a reason for one.

    • +1

Initially set it up to voice control my lights via a rm-mini, has replaced my bedside radio now, just tell it what radio station to play and for how long, easier than setting a sleep timer on my old radio (and sounds a bit better too)

Also like that if you have multiple users, can recognise voices independently so when the missus or I ask for a reminder, it automatically adds it to the right phone.

    • Google does.

  • Thanks OP!

  • Thanks OP. Bought one

  • Pulled the trigger on this one. Great price delivered. Thanks OP!

  • Thanks OP, I bought 2

  • So glad I didn't bite at $79.
Was very close last week at $49.
Like so many, I don't really know what I want it for, but for this price I'm in.
Thanks for the post. Now a race to see if it arrives before my power bank purchase from 14 days ago lol

  • 2005 sold. Interesting to see how long the wait is, or if some orders get cancelled…

  • Just bought two to add to my home and home mini I bought cheap at Harvey's the other week. Got dispatch confirmation email about 30 minutes ago.

  • +1

received today, can confirm it is AU model, excellent deal!

    • Wow one day turnaround, that's awesome!

      • Just received my two charcoal ones. Both confirmed AU models (GA00216-AU) and working as expected.

        Good find OP.

  • Got mine today.

  • +1

Yea got mine last night and was easily $33 worth of entertainment in one night, the novelty factor of asking how much she can bench or to tell me a story… something about simple things and simple minds..
