Windows Update Broke my PC

Hi All, I need some support for Microsoft to know how bad is their automatic Windows 10 Update.

I spend 4 days working with their remote support team and they can’t fix my pc.

Problem: Memory error, profile error, black screen of death and etc.

Solution: Re-install your Windows. I wish you best of luck.

Hows anyone supposed to help you without specifics?

Only time ive had a really bad time with update is when i aciidently interrupted the computer during an update. That was horrendous to deal with

Make a bootable USB with Windows and boot your computer from it. You can then use the troubleshooting tools there which should be able to fix the problem, or you can "upgrade" which should reinstall windows but keep your files (but you still lose your settings and maybe your programs). Send me a message if you need help

I keep a win 10 usb boot on my keyring. Surprisingly it comes in handy more often than the bottleopener.

  • Sounds like a case of PEBKAC :p

  • I've had windows all my life and have no issues at all. Don't know what everyone else is doing

    • I would say most of the issues are against specific software or hardware that has been affected. E.g. Not a biggy but the update disabled my speakers and microphone in Teamspeak. I had to find a setting in Windows to allow other software to access my mike before it would work.

My index finger was broken by a faulty sash window, think yourself lucky.

Microsoft can hardly test every update to work on every machine combo with every software combo. This is going to happen

If you want some actual advice, you’ll need to provide some more details. Does it post? Does windows start? Can you safe mode? What’s actually meant by “broke”?

4 days with windows support team, sounds like a Indian scammer. If your computer loads to a point where they can remote access, than they would have just rolled back the update

  • I think op just wants emotional support, people to give him a hug and tell him it's ok, hence why no useful Specifica info on the problem

  • Most likely a driver compatibility issue, MS provides users with an operating system that can run on an infinite range of hardware combinations so it is bound to have a problem with specific combinations. This is more likely a vendor issue that an MS issue. Always advise to back everything up, clean install windows, patch BIOS/CMOS/UEFI to latest version, and install the latest drivers from the vendor, then run the Windows updates. Or just take it to a PC repair place like MSY and have them look at it, they will do the same thing.

As Slippage mentioned, you should see if it starts in safe mode.

  • Someone's probably mentioned this - but you know you can turn off automatic updates right? I always default it to "Download but notify me before installing." That way you can give it a week, see if there are any horror stories online, and then install.

  • Ask for a help on Airtasker ?

I think we need to go back a step. The OP needs to learn how to explain problems in detail rather than "its broken, you broke it, fix it".. It's probably why they are getting no help resolution from Microsoft!

  • Hi Guys,

My car is not working, please help me fix it.

    Yours sincerely,
    Captain Obvious

    • Have you tried disabling updates?

  • Whats the issue I might be able to help, Ive had issues with windows 10 too before

If you're an average user who only visits select safe websites on occasion and doesn't trawl the dodgy areas of the web: disable Windows updates in Win10; they're more hassle than they are worth.

My mother has had more downtime with Windows 10 than she has in her entire computer usage in her life due to Microsoft updates in order to "protect" her from viruses (real talk: farm her for marketing information and metrics). Ever since Win 10 was released she has been miserable and stressed; I (profanity) that shit off, installed a locked down SOE of Windows 8.1 and she enjoys her computer again as she has complete control.

Computer security doesn't work like this - new security vulnerabilities aren't necessarily created, but are often just discovered in existing software. Ransomware and cryto-malware are both growing issues now and often use security holes that already exist, and often have solutions if only people patched their systems.

It's one of those low-probability, extreme-high-cost kinds of things - so patching in a way is like buying flood insurance for your house. Is your area likely to flood? Probably not. But if it does and you don't have insurance, you're going to be in for a very very bad time. Same here.

    Back up your data.
Restore to the 1st version of windows (reset/format).
    Turn off auto update.
    Done.
I never update my iOS and windows softwares as the factory softwares are the fastest.

  • What's the problem? Can't start Windows? Or you can start Windows but something doesn't work? Your lack of response for 1.5 days may suggest that either you cannot start Windows, or your Internet/network doesn't work?

  • Just a note to OP. Software (ie. programs or updates or games etc) cannot actually "break" your pc . There is always the option to do like a factory reset, clean/fresh new install of windows and any programs you use etc. Just you will lose everything like game saves, files/photos saved, on PC. Always good to have anything important backed up on usb hard drive.
You might have a hardware issue also (hardware is the actual physical components of PC)

  • what antivirus are you running?

  • Ever since I updated to the 1803 it's been taking my PC up to 3 attempts to get into windows, it goes to windows logo then bluescreens then restarts does that up to 3 times till it's able to get to my desktop.

  • Fill your installation drive with media and games so that the drive is nearly full (100 MB or less), Windows won't be able to auto update your system cause there is just not enough space - problem solved.

  • Once i had a windows update that stuck my laptop into a infinite restarting loop.
I exhausted all my options, i was so frustrated, i thought to myself, (profanity) it. I just let it sit there in restarting process, and two weeks later, it fixed it self.

  • Turn off computer, take out drive that hosts windows, open it with another operating system, delete windows, rename old.windows to windows, plug drive back into computer.

    Done.

EDIT: Backup first windows, just in case.

  • Can I fancy you with any Hotfixes?

Hi All, been looking at websites I shouldn't have and downloaded a virus, now I need to blame Windows.

  • I've just dealt with one this morning. And several more over past 2 months in particular (but they do crop up).

The 1803 update is not troublefree. For example, on an ancient Toshiba 500 Satellite..that otherwise runs fantastically on 3GB RAM and SSD, the 1803 failed twice during restart/upgrade stage.

Depending on version of WIn 10 (home, pro, education etc) it can be very difficult to disable updates although can "hide" particular updates.

In summary, if you think Win10 is flawless with upgrades (especially major version upgrades) then you're not across the myriad of hardware that can break ..sometimes fatally (requiring clean install)…yep looking at You..dreaded Recovery Boot Loop.

  • My 4 comps upgraded OK, so thought whats everyone whinging about.
Have since rebuilt 5 others from scratch after no amount of troubleshooting worked & sent many others to comp shops to fix.
One comp shop put Win 8 back on as they said Win 10 would no longer work.
    & there's a new 1803 June release.

  • The issue i have is
The laptop wont wake if its plugged in. When its plugged into power it will wake. Its really annoying as i have to force shutdown.oh, it was originally 8.1

Beeliar, you've explained your windows issue in great detail and the ozbargain community has solved your issue. I don't believe I've seen such a detailed explanation of a computer problem before. If only other posters needing helped were as through as yourself.

  • Before update: Office XP worked fine for Excel.
After update: Office XP stopped working fine for Excel.

No, i'm not paying for an updated version of Office, so bugger off.
