How Do You Run Your Duct Heating?

Looking to see what does community do in terms of heating at home.

  • What temperature do you generally maintain for duct heating? (Me : 21 degrees)
  • Do you generally leave it On all night or just switch it off when you are about to sleep? (Me : off before sleep)

    24° all night then change to 26° @ 7am

  • Prolly costing you a bit changing temps like that every day.

    • Solar :)

how much did your solar system cost you?

also, is your heating, running completely on solar?

    • How does turning it off overnight cost more than leaving it blasting heat?

  • About 24-26 degrees
    Usually on 24/7

    • probably costing you a lot..

      • About a hundred a month all up.

Where I live it's 32 degrees everyday, 365 days of the year.

21 degrees measured at shoulder height is good (roof mounted thermostats tend to read higher). At night though you're actually better off letting the temperature drop to about 17/18 degrees - lots of health reasons if you google it. (e.g. https://www.menshealth.com/health/a19547551/best-sleeping-te… )

Plus, this is OzBargain and lower temperature at night lowers cost!

I run 21 from 6:30am to 10:15 pm, and I use phone bluetooth for presence detection for all family members so it turns off automatically if no-one is home, or back on when they return. Even on mornings of -6 interior temperature is still around 17 degrees so I don't bother running at night. If I did I would set to 17.

  • Where do you people live where you need heating on all the time? Seems overkill for Australia, Im in perth so winter is still warm…

    • Some parts of Australia are cold

    • It hit -8 at my parent's house last night, and is around 9 - 10 now. Heating seems like a good idea.

  • 21 degrees from 5am to 7.30am

    21 degrees from 5pm till 9pm-ish

    Weekends vary

  • at our previous house we had gas ducted underfloor, wall mounted thermo set at 19.

  • Here on the GC, when we do need it (mosting in the evening) we have it on at 18 degrees and then turn it off when the last person goes to bed.

  • 20deg say in morning for few hours to take chiill off. Then at night say from 6 to bed time say 10.30pm.varires. Always off at night, but our kids older 10 an 18. I also suggest turning off vents and closing rooms not occupied. The heater turns off from the temp set on thermostat.

  • I only turn my space heater on when it gets below 10 in the house. Then run it up to around 17. I generally only heat the one room and definitely turn it off before bed. My winter gas bill is only around $25 more than my summer bill (billed every 2 months).

I have the thermostat set 6am to 8:30am at 21, 8:30am to 9:30pm at 20, 9:30pm to 6:am at 17. Program control for those changes. I never turn the unit off. If the thermostat says heat then it happens. In summer it's usually too warm for it to operate.

  • 20 in winter when people at home. 17 when asleep, which rarely triggers.

perhaps you are in a warmer region - no chance internal temp is 17 if heater not on in sydney or melb

  • Wouldn't it have a lot to do with the insulation. We run 20° during the day. 18° at night but only in the coldest months. I prefer not to have the central heating on at night. I get thirsty.
