Thanks to TA for the original PROXY post

Always strutting around showing your arse.

    • Thanks to TA for the original PROXY post lol

      LOL @third person self reference

  • +2

    got one
and I dont even have a desktop

    • These can also fit in laptops with 2.5" drives.

    • It should be "I don't even need one" haha. I got one also, anyway lol

    • The true ozbargain way.

  • Hoping for a price war with SSD again.

    • I must have missed it, what price war?

      • I might be wrong, but wasn't there a price war during the "PLUS15" promotion?

        • Yes

        • Don't know, I thought you meant between SSD manufacturers.

When SSDs were first released and adopted everyone was saying prices would drop significantly, which hasn't happened.

        • @Scab: My bad, I meant between sellers.

    • +1

      $225 and I'll buy the 1TB 860 Evo :)

      • Its getting closer… No Backing out now, haha $231

      • $223 now, show your wallet

        • "A seller made some changes to an item listing."

          Price changed during checkout :(

I'm ready to buy at $225 or lower! Just got out of a work meeting and missed it.

  • 860 EVO better than MX 500?

    • MX500 unless the 860 evo is the same price, the 860 evo don't perform much better than the MX500.

If speed is what you want, drop both drives out of the equation altogether and get an NVME drive, not SATA. That's where all the performance is.

      • -1

Barely any real world difference though for most users.

        • you could say that for 90% of ssds

        • @Basimx: Yes but the difference is that NVME SSDs are more expensive.

For NVME you are paying a premium for speed that isn't bottlenecking 90% of users (or form factor for a laptop).

      • yeah, the NVME are still a bit pricier, but size and performance is very appealing ….at 1TB it's painfull, but for 500GB the extra $100 is worth it.

Real world difference, depends on the age of your motherboard, lots of laptops now come with NVME M.2 slots so the appeal for laptop users is 2 fold,
        1- main boot drive upgrdae
2- you can still have a cheap 2tb spinde in the sata slot.

desktop users don't have shortage of space for drives or sata ports.

  • Was going tot go for the Samsung then bought 3x Crucial MX500 1TB's from PCBytes for $221 each with eBay Plus.

    • +1

      that's a great deal mate

  • Far out that's a hell of a deal. Must. Resist.

  • 970 evo 500gb or 860 evo 1tb? hmm..

    • +3

Unless you do a lot of 4K (or 6K/8K) video editing or you have another NVMe SSD on the same machine (or Thunderbolt 3 SSDs) or a bunch of SATA3 SSDs in RAID, you are not going to see the real benefit of 970 EVO. The cheaper MX500 1TB is also worth considering.

I know most people have good experience with SSDs, but for me, after the death of 3 SSDs (including one Samsung SSD), I wouldn't consider SSDs as reliable. One of still working SSDs has started to re-allocate sectors, it's nowhere close to the quoted write endurance.

Best to not overspend on TLC SSDs.

      • How about CAD cam but on a 4k screen , and connected to a 3d scanner? 970?

        • +2

If you need to work on multiple CAD files at the same time a lot, then you could get some benefit from NVMe. 3D scanner - it actually depends on how fast your 3D scanner can send data to your computer. If the scanner is only USB 3.0 (or 3.1 gen 1), even 860 EVO would be waiting for data to come in (let alone 970 EVO). But if your 3d scanner supports USB 3.1 gen 2 or Thuderbolt 3, then certainly go for NVMe. Video editing / rendering or tasks which require a lot of disk bandwidth (i.e. you run multiple VMs on the machine or a server serving multiple people) can really benefit from NVMe.

As for 4K screen, it depends more on your graphics card. Even for CAD, if you need to do a lot of 3D rendering, the GPU matters a lot. You might think NVMe is fast, but it is still slower than RAM (so it cannot even compare to GDDR5).

If it is for work related (tax deductible) and you have the budget to go for NVMe, sure go ahead, but I would suggest you consider getting MLC based NVMe SSDs (e.g. 970 Pro). If you are going to get NVMe, might as well aim for the best. 970 EVO is priced like a MLC SSD despite it being a TLC SSD.

Look at real world usage type benchmarks, you can see 970 EVO is still one notch below MLC based NVMe SSDs. In real world app type tests, you can see 4K random read/write matters more (hence why Optane 3D XPoint SSD solution benefits more from increased NVMe bandwidth in real life).

        • @tightarse: The game is on! PCByte now @ $243.75

        • @LlamaLlamaLamp: Don't you love it. SE now $243.

        • @tightarse: It's funny that the sellers are now the ones doing the bidding on eBay.

This deal is becoming awfully tempting. Entertaining too.

          EDIT: BAM! PCByte @ $239.25

        • +1

@tightarse: I bought it at $258, any possible way I can do to refund the difference you reckon? :(

        • @tightarse: tbh, I will pay little more to pcbyte. Tired of SE or futu raising prices on most of items.
Hope they have such competition on laptops.

          Edit. Spellings.

        • @RichardL: why not on other items…

        • @tightarse: already lost a lot lol

        • @RichardL:

Ahh the decision to wait a few days and see where this ends, or risk out of stock disappointment.

        • +1

@ozbjunkie: SE only has 2 left in stock as of this post (likely to be restocked). PC Byte has more then 10.

        • @tightarse: And SE is showing OOS, most likely restocked shortly

        • @RichardL: More just added.

        • +2

@tightarse: At a higher price. $328 -> $246. Looks like PC Byte follow suit.
