Shops Which Install Car Electronics?

Hi all,

So like many others, I jumped on one of the dashcam deals which were around about a month ago and it's due to arrive really soon. Does anyone know which auto shops are good for installing car electronics? I would've tried it myself but I've got a few other things I wanted to install and figured altogether, might as well get it done professionally.

Thanks all.

I believe Autobarn installs dash cams:

    • Oh sweet, thanks. Now to see if there are any near me…

Edit: Also I really can't talk because I'm asking, but seat covers?

They’ll probably just plug it in to the cig socket and run the cable around the windscreen. How professional do you want the install? If it requires wiring into the existing I’d get an auto electrician to do it otherwise they’ll just use those unreliable scotch lock things.

What other work do you need doing?

      • Yeah I was hoping for more than "plug into ciggie lighter".

Also looking to install a bluetooth adapter into/behind the head unit, swap out my bum subwoofer, and maybe swap out headlight bulbs for ones with slightly cooler (colour temp) bulbs.

        • Cooler colour temps put out less light, in case you weren't aware. You can get some good Philips or Osram +100/+120 bulbs that are a little whiter than standard that put out a lot more light, but by whiter, I don't mean LED or HID white… I think they're around 3800k kelvin.

      • I recently called my local Autobarn, and they do a proper install, not just plug it the cigarette plug. OP you should ask them how are they going to install it before you proceed. If they say that they will connect it through the fuse box then it is probably fine.

Autobarn won’t install equipment not sold to you by them… same for JB.

You need to find a smaller installer or an auto elec might do it.

      • Ah drat. Thanks for the heads up (and yeah that sounds kinda reasonable).

JB Hifi does at certain shopping centres

    • Do you know which ones in Melbourne do?

JB won’t do an install if you don’t buy the equipment from them.

I recommend DIY if you're not connecting dashcam to the battery

    • Thanks - yeah I even looked up how to DIY it and bought a cheap trim removal kit, but I'm hoping to have a few other bits and pieces installed too. If I can't find an auto-electrician to do it at a good price, I'll fall back on DIY-ing it. Feel like it's a bit of a risk since I have zero exp, might be a penny-wise-pound-foolish move if I mess up something.

      • dashcam and light bulb is easy, just not sure about the adapter for the headunit. i guess it's fine if you know it's compatible and have a slot to plug in, but if it requires unplugging or rewiring things then I would be worried.
