Selling at eBay - PayPal Is Mandatory?

Hi all,

I am a n00b when it comes to selling stuff at eBay.
I will be moving in near future so I am trying to sell some of furniture.

I received (targeted?) offer from ebay $1 final fee so I put some stuff there.
Since most of my stuff are bulky (furniture), I put Pick Up only and Cash on Delivery as payment method.
But when I tried to submit, it said an error with Payment Method and it only worked if I included Paypal as a payment method?!

I am a bit worried using Paypal especially if the buyer tries to take advantage of buyers protection to scam me (worst case scenario).
In the scenario, where the buyer pays via Paypal and then come to my house to pick up the item, is there anything I can/should do to prove that the buyer has picked up the (correct) item so that in case the buyer somehow lodges a claim with Paypal, it will not be valid?

Advice please. Thanks

Dont sell on eBay with furniture. You wont get any offers.

    Gumtree or the local paper

When you create your first listing, you'll decide how you’d like your customers to pay you. In most categories, you will need to offer at least one of eBay’s accepted safer electronic payment methods. Most purchases using these payment methods are covered by eBay Money Back Guarantee, which also offers protection for sellers.

No need to be wary. I have done multiple sell for pickup only. Even paying with PayPal you will be fine. Just get them to sign a pickup receipt. Buyer protection (I could be mistaken) is actually not covered on items picked up - so them making a claim post anything that is pickup only will be denied by PayPal.

An alternative is to get them to leave feedback at point of pickup, again just to validate that they did pick it up. But the pickup receipt is probably easiest.

    • Thanks. I am thinking along the line of pick up receipt as well.

    • It's only seller protection that becomes compromised in a pick up situation, since the buyer can claim that they never received the item and you won't have a tracking number to provide (as per their seller protection requirements). The idea of a signed 'pickup receipt' may be sufficient evidence for PayPal in the event that a buyer tries this, but it might not be - they could well decide in the buyer's favour, still.

Facebook Marketplace seems to be the best place to sell at the moment. I have put adverts for furniture on both FB and Gumtree; all sales have been made through FB. As with Gumtree, cash on pickup is key!

It shouldn't be mandatory to use PayPal but you might need another payment method other than cash on delivery to list it.
But, as others have said, Gumtree and Facebook marketplace are more suitable for pickup only items.

    • I tried to put bank transfer and cash on delivery but still gave an error.

So looks like ebay force me to include PayPal as a payment method..

      • Paypal or Credit Card
