How Do I Buy an Expired Australian Domain?

Hey Tech & Marketing gurus 💻

Currently building a e-commerce website on shopify for home appliances niche, currently on fresh new domain bought 6 months ago I have found that buying an old domain if possible in my target niche is much better than fresh domain for SEO (DA, LF & links).

So,
1. Where to buy old .com.au domains, have found website sell .com domains but none specifically for Australian domains (domcop, register compass etc)
2. Godaddy has a service for $100 just to locate but need to pay extra for domain itself. Shall I opt this or any better choice out there?
3. In terms of SEO should the domain name be related to my niche? Have real time struggle to fix on a name, any suggestions here is a massive help.

If this is not the right place for this post, please suggest which forum is suitable.

Cheers

  • Buying an old .com.au domain is no different than buying a new .com.au domain.

If a domain expires, there is a grace period in which it is not available to purchase - but after that grace period, it is on the market and can be purchased from any domain registrar. I got my domains through cheapdomains.com.au

I find those services that charge $100s for domains to be nothing but rip offs. They are basically notification services. All they do is monitor a domain to see if they will expire. As soon as they expire and the owner has not renewed them, they will send you a message saying the domain is now available to purchase.

Also, be careful that some domain registrars will actually purchase a domain that you are interested in and then charge you a lot more for it by holding it for ransom.

    • With GoDaddy being on the registrar's that often hold domains for ransom.

    • I don't agree that both are same, check this blog https://www.cloudliving.com/aged-domains-seo, I guess domain needs to snatched when it's about to expire rather than later just to retain links to the domain, etc.

Thanks for that, will aviod them altogether, any idea who provides expired Australian domains?

  • Hop on the who is registry and try to contact the owner and make an offer?

    • Thanks for the suggestion, have been using it for a while but as you know spotting an expired Australian domain is frustrating, not many websites scrape them. I do think there is better way to do this.

  • When the domain expires, it goes into a holding period that the owner can buy it back first. Then its released for all basically.

As above, use whois work out who owns it and when it expires. Make them a offer. If the site it dead, they'll happy offload it.

  • I could be wrong but you may also need an abn/acn/trademark number etc for a .com.au domain.

    • I don't know if that's mandatory, but I do have a ABN.

      • You need an ABN for a .com.au
