Would love to support Australian businesses, but unfortunately, i am not a rich person who is happy to spend more, and in order to fulfill my living needs, i need to spend wisely with a cheaper price. Even these days i have try to move my old habit spending groceries to ALDI, which is generally cheaper than Coles or woolworths… If i keep spending more to help Australian business, who is going to look after my welfare? I am working for Australian company, and they never ever look after me. All that have @ their mind is the profit, instead of caring for their staff. Therefore, to me, personally, i only look after myself by spending at a cheaper products… Do apologise, but this is mainly my own thoughts, i believe other may have an oppose mind. Thank you

          Ironic perspective coming from "gandhi"

What the F has Gerry Harvey ever done for us?

He only knows to charge rip off prices and exploiting the cheap chinese products..and reselling it to us at a rip off price

Why didn't he support Australian businesses back then.

Now we got a chance at the large global market
so we don't get rip off by him

And now he cries poor me

Lol. Even with GST online is still much much cheaper. AU retail is dead. It’s just that simple. Walk around any shopping centre and see how many empty shops they are.

AU business had a chance to evolve, they didn’t. A perfect example was Dick Smith. Charging $15 for generic cheap shitty AV cables that would of cost them like $1. eBay came along and rightfully destroyed them.

        • Even JB Hifi. Bricks and mortar shops are dead.

Following the lead from ozbargain's obsession with Xiaomi Mi Box, I decided to do some research on an Android media player. The only one JB sell in store was a Minix U9-H at $299 - a full $100 off online discounting!

So I did under $50 with ebay's 10% (auction, sorry) and went with Mecool, a no name Chinese brand. It mightn't have all the bells and whistles but with CoreELEC and Ubuntu support that's a better bet than blowing 3 hundred.

        • @pcox: Could have spent as low as $26 too, especially if you're happy with your own OS - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/377841

    • wait till it drops to $22 to $25

  • It seems like a good upgrade from the Mi Fit 2. And quite cheap.

    • you mean miband2

      I got miband2
no I don't think upgrade is worth it

      • Agreed. The display is useless. A year and a half of use, I can barely see anything on the screen.

    • +2

There's no Mi Fit 2, only a Mi Band 2.

And by all accounts there is minimal difference between the 2 an the 3. Look at the reviews, not worth it imo.

      • +1

yes, it shows this person has no clue and doesn't even own one.

Not worth the upgrade if you got a miband 2.

I think my next one will be a smart watch
but the battery life will not be as good.

    • MiBand 3 has more info displayed. 2 and 3 claim to have the same battery durability of 20+ days however some reviewers mentioned MiBand 2 lasts longer (probably depends on how it's used). Mi Band 3 has a touch screen and pad whereas Mi Band 2 just has a pad. MiBand 3 has better water proofing (but most people won't need this much).

I have a MiBand 2 but won't be upgrading anytime soon.
It probably also means that MiBand 2 prices will drop soon (I got mine for $22.95 via GearBest through deals ages ago).

      • just wait

miband3 will drop to $25 eventually

Why is Zapals collecting GST? Why don’t they tell the AU government to f themselves and send the package in an unmarked “gift” package?

    • The customs declaration is a legal document. Declaring it as a gift would presumably be perjury (yeah, I know it IS common practice despite this).

OTOH, if everyone refused to collect the GST and simply declared the true value, then the Oz Govt would have to decide whether to process the GST claim themselves. The sheer number of transactions would be hard for them to manage. They might then rethink and set a realistic threshold.

      • +2

But they’re not based in Australia, so why give a dam about our laws?

        • Under international law, they are expected to make an accurate statement, AFAIK.

I do agree that they should not take responsibility for Oz tax collections.

        • +1

@UNM: like China actually cares lol

  • +5

Won't be buying from them if there collecting Australian Grab Snatch Take.if everyone does it that will stop.

  • +2

~$5 more gets you one from eBay (with platypus code ) in a week rather than a month+ from places like this…..

    • +4

Could not find one on ebay at the price - care to link please?

  • +4

It might be worth waiting until September/October for the NFC version which is approximately $10 more expensive. It currently supports Mi Pay and fingers crossed that Xiaomi adds Android and Apple Pay before it goes international.

    • +2

There’s no way Apple (or even Google) are going to trust Xiaomi with their payment systems. NFC will be pointless outside of China.

How does the GST paid, get to the state revenue office? Zapals have ABN?

    • Wonder if the tax actually gets to the revenue office..

      • I still don't know how it works. Since July 1st, I haven't bought anything online. Still in the dark here.

    • yes they do, even have offices. But do not comply with Australian Consumer Law.

  • +1

The new Australian GST laws that came into effect on the 1st July are unenforceable, surely you know that, as your Revenue Office has no way of knowing what they are due, or from whom. Even if they did, they have no way of making non-Australian companies pay up.
If you think that the extra monies you've paid to foreign companies to cover the GST will ever get back to Australia then you're living in a 'fool's paradise'. What is likely to happen is YOU will have to pay the GST, maybe again, (plus a handling charge of course) at the border.
Billionaire Gerry Norman is not responsible for this new tax, the Australian Government it. It might have been originated by Gerry Harvey to protect his, mainly, franchise empire but it's your Government that has made it come about. Ask yourselves how, and/or why, that has happened, and more importantly, what you're going to do about it. Suggestion: try the voting system!
Every company trading in Australia is there to rip you off, not to give you 'a fair go', as I'm sure some think. On rare occasions, I can find goods for sale in Australia that are actually cheaper then I can buy them here in the UK and I can buy Australian made products at a fraction of what they cost in Australia, so it is possible to sell at competitive prices and still make a good profit.

    • It's too late now. I don't recall seeing a protect from general public (us) when we first knew about this. eBay and Amazon US complained about it.

I have paid GST on international items a few times since July 1. I did that because the price is still cheaper than local sellers even with the GST. Going through my history of items purchased online in the past 2 years, I bought way more items (and more expensive items) from local sellers.

You won't be rich saving money on GST as so many things are more expensive nowadays (utility bills, insurance).

What is likely to happen is YOU will have to pay the GST, maybe again, (plus a handling charge of course) at the border.

I will print out the invoice showing I already paid GST. Custom will need to give me a good reason why they believe I have to pay GST twice. If those companies don't actually pay GST and have the guts to charge me GST, I won't buy from them as soon as I found out that's the case.

Honestly, the politicians are ripping us off in many other areas (i.e. their unreal super - we are paying for them) regardless of which party - they are all clowns. If the item is worth getting after the added GST, I will buy. If you really want to save on GST, you start a business and you can get the GST back. I will try my best not to buy from Harvey Norman from now on.

      • It IS too late now that it has been allowed to come into law. I put that down to the reluctance on the part of the people to do anything about it. But on the bright side laws can be changed, or even cancelled, as successive Australian Governments have proved.
I was surprised to read your comment about having paid GST on international items a few times since the 1st July, a law that's barely a week old so not yet tried and tested, presumably in the belief that the tax will ever reach the Australian coffers. I would suspect that you haven't yet received the items you've ordered so time will tell if your actions have not been anything other than naive.
Printing out an invoice showing that you've paid GST to an offshore company, over which the Australian Government has no jurisdiction will, I feel, have no sway with your Customs when they're asking you to cough up some money if you want your goods. And don't you think that saying that you wouldn't purchase again from a company that had charged you GST yet not passed that on to the Australian Revenue Office a bit like shutting the stable door once the horse had bolted?
What you have to understand is that the Australian Retail Market is small (yet lucrative to the companies who have a presence there) so I can see why many offshore companies could look upon charging you and retaining the GST as some form of additional profit.
Ask yourself the question, if an offshore company has only charged you the 10% GST (with no markup) who is going to pay their costs in sending that money to Australia?
I checked during last week whether it was still possible, as a private individual, to take goods into Australia up to the value of $900 without having to pay an import duty, and it is, but I would question for how long the cash-thirsty Australian government will allow that to continue!!!

        • Correct…

there is no proof these companies are actually sending the GST to the government (not that I give a shit if they do or don't)
but they could just add the GST cost and then keep it for themselves.

      • What you mean you won't be rich saving on GST..

If you didn't had to pay this shitty Liberal GST tax (on goods below $1000)
at least you won't be poorer..

Yes, there are other expensive utility bills
but now we are losing more money on buying things because of this GST.
And if you spending $999 of items, you now are paying $99 extra in tax.

This GST actually affects the poor and middle income people more than the rich people.

And why are you on Ozbargain?
People on here care about saving even a dollar and consider it a bargain.

  • There are two versions of Mi Band 3: standard version, and NFC supported version. The latter will be available later (and will certainly cost more).

  • shopro rolls this
