Credit Card Compromised, used on Booking.com for 3 bookings

Hi, Picked up 3 transaction on my credit card that were processed the previous day/night.
Cancelled credit card straight away, disputed transactions etc.

Rang Booking.com, very unhelpful, asked for their fraud department, reply was we don't have one.
Emailed Booking.com customer service, they play dumb without a reservation no and pin.

Any ideas how to stop the person making the bookings enjoying free accommodation.

Bookings were made in Thai Baht (AUD $3167.20)

There was also one booking on Cathay Pacific AU website, they were more helpful stopping the fraudulent booking.
Haven't heard back though since calling.

You’ve charged it back and canceled the card. Your job is done.
The bigger question is how did they get your card details???

    • Just wondering, how long do you have to cancel the card?

was wondering, because i only check my debit card transactions once a week

      • 90 days usually

Don’t use a debit card for anything except cash withdrawals. At least when you’re hit with fraud on a credit card it’s not your money as you haven’t paid the bill yet.

        • Too bad ING's current setup requires 5 no. monthly transactions..

Any alternative recommendations for main banking?

        • @movieman: use ING for very small PayPass transactions and then stop. As to what other product to use it depends on your usage and circumstances.

        • @kipps:

That's exactly what I'm currently doing.. but I don't know how many months / years I'm willing to put up with it.

Hence why I'm looking at other options.

  • Would still like to stop whoever enjoying there i’ll gotten gains.
Used card in May overseas, UAE, Italy, Germany. Took a while
to start using the card if it was skimmed back in May.

Pissed off with lack of action/care by Booking.com

The bookings will get cancelled when the bank reverses the payment transactions from the merchants.

If your CVV wasn't revealed, and the booking form didn't ask for one, then booking.com has just passed the number and name to the hotel, and possibly the hotel bookings were just to hold the room, no money has changed hands, and the hotel will cancel when it's notified that the card has been cancelled. Which is why booking.com wasn't interested, it was between your bank and the hotel to take countermeasures.

    • Fraud spend on cards that are physically skimmed, are usually copied and used at physical stores and/or ATM's.

Fraud spend online is usually from data compromises.

Booking.com probably have zero liability, so don't care.

Having been through this experience I can honestly say that comments like these provide no value to someone that's obviously stressing out (at least I would be) it's rather unpleasant

  • Had a booking.com fraud on my CC last year too. I have never used booking.com and it was a new card so I don;t know how they got the details. Got the card cancelled and money refunded no problems. Crims will be crims.

I find it interesting that Booking.com don't have a fraud department when they have job postings for people to work in it:

    https://workingatbooking.com/vacancies/fraud-analyst/

While others have said your job is done re cancelling the credit card, I would also make a complaint to Booking.com stating that you attempted to disclose fraudulent activity to them and the CS Representatives you talked to were unable to help you. Point to that job listing.

  • Thanks, great job advertisement.
Had a few email conversations with Booking.com, last one came back Dear Mr Larry etc (not my name).

  • Would suggest checking/understanding how it was compromised. If by computer then wipe the PC then log back on and change every darn password you have that relates to anything of value.

Edit: it also may be possible (if your PC is compromised) that new credit cards could be created without your knowledge.

    • Not always a compromised PC… just as easily achieved via mail theft, or a compromised merchant (both on and offline). I'd wager that last one cos it yields the most CC numbers for the crim's effort.

  • Got the dollars back.
Cathay Pacific refunded the dollars, hope the person who purchased the ticket had a nice flight to nowhere.
Booking.com stuff all, bank footed the bill.
