[Resolved] Parked Car Got Hit by a 13CABS Vehicle

Hey guys. Just asking for a friend of mine. Her parked Honda Civic on the street got hit overnight on the rear right hand side and what was left was a chunk of the 13CABS.

13cabs were called but they were unwilling to help

Police was called but they will only take actions through phone calls

Any ideas what can be done?

UPDATE: Taxi driver came back with his friend and seemed genuinely apologetic so it looks like things will be more simple thankfully :)

    Just an update guys

The taxi driver came back and seemed remorseful of the incident. He said he was pretty tired at the time of the incident (4:30am) and looks like everything will be taken care of with less complications

Was interesting seeing the comments and just imagining if the driver didn't come back and we learned a few things.

    Cheers guys! Ozbargain community rocks

Does she has comprehensive car insurance?

  • +6

Police was called but they will only take actions through phone calls

What does this mean? It's a hit and run, they should get involved!

    • +2

Could you explain this a bit more please?

Hit and runs in VIC (which I assume you are in) are generally not investigated where it's damage only and there are no avenues of enquiry available. They ARE investigated when there are avenues available regardless of damage.

The fact it was a 13CABS vehicle definitely in an avenue for police to chase up.

Go back to your local station and talk to the person at the counter. If they refuse to take a report, ask politely to talk to a Sergeant.

      • The fact it was a 13CABS vehicle definitely in an avenue for police to chase up.

There was remnants of a vehicle at the scene which suggests said vehicle may have been involved.
One would think it reasonable for police to investigate that avenue.
Although you would think it unlikely, the potential does exist that said vehicle did NOT collide with this parked vehicle.

The police may be treating the situation more seriously than the OP's post suggests.
We have received limited information of which is open to interpretation

        • +1

Sadly my experience has been police dont care unless they can make money out of it. I hate having to say that as i used to think police were here for the people but my own experiences with hit and run while i was driving and the guy drove off and i chased him and eventualy after several minutes of him driving fast to get away i was able to catch up in a dead end street. The police were still not interested in even fining him or anything

Same scenario when i got burgled, not much interest as well as the many times we have had issues like cars blocking driveways or damage to cars etc. But any kind of revenue making and they are on top of it…..

  • +8

Post these photos on their facebook perhaps ?

    • +9

      I like that.
Better yet post on your own wall and tag the cab company.
That way they can not delete the post.
Make sure the post is set to public.
Maybe one of the other drivers will come forth with details

    • +4

      +1

Post the 2 photos on their Facebook and demand for their actions.

That was a serious hit. I wasn't expecting anything like that.

    • +1

Another +1 to posting on FaceBook. This isn't some minor scrape - people will notice so much damage when scrolling through their newsfeed (as its spread by commenting, liking, sharing etc) and then couple that image with the one of the huge chunk of 13CABS's car, and you'll get a good response. Wouldn't take long for the company to reach out to you.

  • +30

    That will buff out.

    • +1

      With grease of elbow.

      Very nice.

      • +2

Brand new car excellent condition new paint as old paint wasnt preferred colour. Driven by old lady.

          oil change every 5000km

        • @Oz8argain:
          Great for high-yield investments !!

  • Wow that is a decent hit.
I hope for your friends sake they are fully insured.

Recommend your friend purchases one a front & rear dash cam with the motion sesnor that activates the cameras when the car is turned off but a hit is detected.

    • Which models do you recommend?

  • +3

looks like there's chassis damage as well, might be a write-off, I sure hope you(r friend) has full insurance

    • Hopefully its not repaired and returned.

  • Any ideas what can be done?

The same thing you would do if it was a non 123cabs vehicle!! Report hit and run and contact your insurance!

    • +1

Haha, the feels when Insurance operates monday to friday

      • +10

Which insurance you with? You need to call the claims department/number, not customer service. Many insurance company's have a 24/7 claim number.

  • +9

There's no way whoever hit that car had a driveable car after that. It's not a soft hit so I can only assume the cabbie had a few knock-off bevvys at the pub or fell asleep.

Call 13 cabs back, ask to speak with a manager or supervisor. Tell them you found parts of one of their cars and you won't call the police and press charges if they give you their insurance details.

Also, the police should investigate that sort of hit. As above if they won't help at first ask to speak with a Sergeant

Edit: Really..? Who the f negged me?

    • I + ‘d you go fix that stupid neg

    • +3

Didn’t neg you but - I wouldn’t do this as it potentially might be construed as extortion. It’ll make the situation worse.

      • you work for 13Cabs! all jokes aside, I agree that being calm and kind might get you further in most situations

      • (I know this is solved but I still have a question) Is this really extortion? When insurance details should be left and this sort of thing should be sorted without involving the police, isn't it what you would have to do? I know it was X that hit me, if X doesn't provide insurance details or admit culpability isn't contacting the police in regards to the incident the next step?

Does it just depend how you say this? I thought a police report was necessary half the time when dealing with insurance.

  • Big hit … Somebody wouldve woken up. My guess, no insurance?

    • Everyone should've been up to watch the Brazil vs Belgium game. Disappointed.

      • +1

Not unless the TV and Belgian Beer was in the car…

  • +23

If it's of any help, that piece is from a 2009-2011 Toyota Camry Altise.

    • +1

OP Someone done half the work for you

    • +37

I'd even go one further, and say it was a yellow one.

      • +1

At least the front bumper was

        • +7

          Maybe it was a Taxi?

        • +10

Maybe one of those fake taxi's that pop up on adult websites?

        • @Cheap Charlie:

Okay, I'm going on the intersites to find this footage for you guys.

      • +1

After an exhausting 6 hours after the incident, we manage to eliminate 200+ plus countries on where the car was at the time of the incident

        • Which countries did you eliminate twice?

        • +3

          @Drew22:

I just googled it and UN says there's 195 recognized countries.

I'm a football nut so I went with FIFA's 211 associated member states.

But let's just say I eliminated Wakanda and Mordor twice

        • @penguin286:
          Atlantis?

      • I dunno, I'm going to need to enhance the footage. Enhance. Enhance…

Police will only help if injury, death or government property damages (traffic light etc) occur.
Civil matter they will tell you to go through insurance.
Will only help in hit and run if you have something for them to chase up the other party details with (I.e. rego plates).
Having a piece of panel doesn’t give them any idea who to chase up.
It is not their responsibility to investigate who hit you, it’s yours.

Find out which CAB company was involve, then get the police to force them to give details of the driver.

      Contradicting statements?

      • -3

I’ll reword it. Find out which company or taxi Licensee the at fault car belongs too, not ask the police to do it.

Then go to the police to ask them to demand the reponsible party to hand over insurance or driver details.

Police only chasing up details, they don’t do any investigation.

        • Look at title of post -

Parked Car got hit by a 13CABS vehicle

    • +1

Police also have to attend if your vehicle is unable to be driven afterwards.

Policy seems to have changed and they no longer need to attend unless it is a bus or truck that needs to be towed (NSW)

      https://www.police.nsw.gov.au/safety_and_prevention/safe_and…

Police will attend and investigate traffic crashes meeting the ‘Major Traffic Crash’ criteria. That is where:
someone is killed or injured, or
a party fails to stop and exchange particulars, or
a driver is allegedly under the influence of intoxicating liquor or a drug.

      • +1

a party fails to stop and exchange particulars

it's luckythey left their phone number!

  • -3

This is an easy one. Drive around and look for a yellow taxi with 1/2 the front missing and an sea or se driver behind the wheel. They’re statistically more likely to be a taxi driver and a bad driver at that.

    • The driver would be silly to not hide the car and get it repaired low key for cash

      • Haha yeah.

Apparently it's not his taxi so looks like that played in his mind as well in the initial incident

  • +1

Far out! Looks like a hard hit.

  • -6

How do we know you didn't reverse into another car. This smells fisty to me

    • +2

Do we want to know where your fist has been?

      • -1

Pfft, you wana know where my fist is going to go in a second?

    • +1

      Damn
      You got me

    • turns out to be non fisty

    • Let me guess, you’re a taxi driver…

  • Call your insurance company. They will take care of it and you will probably have to pay an excess and take a hit on your NCB.

The cab company is pretty crappy to not follow this up, hit their social media as others have suggested. Given the damage the vehicle may be off the road. There is not too much else you can do.

    • Funny enough, the insurance is closed on this very day. Monday it is!

  • +10

So the cabbie only came back because they realised that there is enough evidence to track it back to them. That's a offense to leave the scene without writing a note!

even though they apologised, this needs to go further.

First of all, check your insurance policy to see if you will get penalised with higher rates or an excess if YOU file a not at fault claim with your insurance.

If you will not get any penalty, claim it in your insurance. It's easier.

If you will get some kind of penalty, DON'T claim it on yours. Get the cabbie to claim it on theirs (they'd probably filing a claim anyway for their damages). Once you have their claim number firmly in your hands and contacted THEIR insurance to repair your car and you know it's legit claim number, then proceed. (I have done this before when the other party had CommInsure and CommInsure treated me VERY well to pay for the damage with my choice if repairer, reimbursed my car rental including Uber to/from the car rental place. No ding to my insurance whatsoever)

Report them to the Police for leaving the scene without writing a note.

Report them to the Taxi Services Commission as well.

This is a professional driver and they should be held to a higher standard. Sorry isn't going to cut it for such a serious offense.

And isn't it unsurprising that 13CABS (or the taxi industry in general) was unwilling to take responsibility for their drivers' shonky behavior. They only exist to protect each other.

This coming November state election, look out for a political party called the Transport Matters Party, be warned that this is in fact the political arm of the Tax Industry and are trying to kill Uber and reinstate their monopoly.

    • +1

I wanted to suggest going to the police and file a hit and run.

But then I thought nothing is going to happen from there and it will just be a waste of the OP's time.

    • +2

I suspect the cabbie came back after he sobered up to avoid a DUI

  • Also OP, with the information exchanged with the Taxi Driver, find the Taxi and take photos of their bumper or call the cops right away if you can't find it (before they fix it) in case you need to prove that this Cabbie did it. Not unheard of for another driver to renege if you don't have any hard evidence that they did it.

  • +12

My bet is the guy showed up may not be the actual driver who hit your car. He might send one with a real license or DL with public authorization.

    • I used to see this so many times in Canberra. Every second one was “filling in for his cousin who was sick”.

  • +7

this will not put money in the police departments bank account, of course they wont care

  • How in the world does that happen? Please expand your answer/story

    • +1

      Driver said he was sleepy
Sorry, not a lot of details as I'm secondary in all this

      • Ok thanks

  • +3

Call insurance company and make a claim!
13Cabs has full time lawyers trying to talk you into taking the car to their repair shop and they will do a shit repair or they try to lower your claim if you deal with them directly.

Let your insurance company deal with it.

  • +3

When i saw the title I thought it was going to be a little scratch. That's a huge smash, he must have been doing 30-50 km/hr.

Interesting that he didn't stop at the time of the incident. Maybe he just freaked out and didn't know what to do….. Maybe he had alcohol in his system….

Glad he came forward for your friend's sake and hopefully it will all get sorted out by insurance claims and your friend wont be too put out.

  • -8

    Lucky you.
Meanwhile I suggest you stay out of other people's business.
Its not for you to get involved at all.

  • +2

A Ford Pinto wouldn't have survived that. :+)

    • +2

      Boom 🔥🔥

  • Looks like the driver either needed to wait out a few drinks or didn’t realise there was an identifying car part left behind. Once he sobered up or realised about the evidence he deiceded fessImg up was the best option.

  • -2

Good Result - you get your car fixed/replaced at other's expense and Taxi driver doesn't get prosecuted for drink driving.

I would still report to police now, with an expectation of the driver being prosecuted for failing to report/exchange details.

    • Why is it a good thing the Taxi driver doesn't get prosecuted for drink driving?

  • Was the owner of the parked vehicle present at the time of the collision? Is it an offence in vic to not exchange particulars with an unattended vehicle?
    https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/road-r…

if there is any property damage and the owner (or Police) is not there, you must report the crash to the nearest open police station.

  • /thread closed

  • Geez, what are you complaining about? Just give it a wash! 🤣

    • Hahaha, stuff all this insurance nonsense ey!
