Gets pretty cold here in Melbourne and I wear this jacket almost every day when I go out
My body goes quite warm rather quickly as I walk (I like walking and tend to walk fast - like going from Flinders St Station to Melbourne Central by walking).
Will this make it too hot? Should I get the one without the ducks' feather?
Yes it might. The Halo gets really hot for me if I walk briskly e.g running for a train, I need to unzip it or take it off when I get on the train.
But I wear a long sleeve shirt and a jumper underneath as my office is freezing.
If I leisurely stroll around during the lunch break it's the perfect temp to wear this jacket.
I think you will get hot in any down jacket if you are actively moving your body. Down jackets are best suited for when you're stationary in our climate as it doesn't get below 0 degrees. If you get a thinner down jacket such as Kathmandu Heli or Uniqlo ulralight down jacket/parka you probably can get away without taking it off when you're active. You'll get hot but not as hot wearing a Macpac Halo.

It's a really silly question to ask "will I get hot in this jacket, if I'm the type of person to get hot when I walk?".

I have both the Halo down and Uber light down. I find the Uber light down is just fine for a cold Melbourne winter, it also helps that it’s pretty much windproof! I usually wear it over my work shirt or a tee shirt. I heat up pretty quickly in down jackets so the Halo would get too hot for me. I still haven’t had a chance to wear the Halo jacket in snowy sub zero conditions.

I have 2 macpac jackets (one Halo and one slim something) and 4 outraks. My personal preference is to take the outraks everytime, as they have thicker and better shell material (macpac looks like it always came out of the wash, so crinkly), elastic cuffs (macpac has velcro straps), built in carry bag (macpac has separate bag that I lost), thicker zipper and some come with a hood:

I used Outrak brand during my Europe trip in the middle of winter (December/Jan) and find it to be perfectly fine and kept me nice and warm when I combined it with some decent (Uniqlo) thermals.
I take it those are sub zero temperatures?
Would be good to know if I ever get over my aversion to freezing weather that they can hold up with some thermals underneath.
I use mine on days that are <15* around Melbourne (so pretty much all winter) and at night to save around 4-7kw of heater electricity/night. The last 4 years I've bought 1-2 every year with the savings in electricity.
Yeah there were a few places that hit just below sub zero (Berlin, Budapest were around -2), everywhere else was hovering around the 0-5 degree range and I never really felt too cold or uncomfortable.
how do you find the sizing of these compared to Macpac ?
About the same when comparing a Halo to a Outrack without a hood. They are sized 1-2 sizes too big as they are designed to be worn with layers underneath.
The outrack ones with hoodies are slightly not as large, and more fitted. They could still be worn with a thick jumper underneath though, they are not slim down jackets.
I've found that I can get away with a ladies sized 10 outrack to get a slim fit on a normal down jacket without paying the price premium that the slim down jackets tend to have - don't judge :P
What temperatures are these designed for? Will these make you overheat in 15°c?
I've worn them in sub zero. Perfect for that. Probably a bit too warm for 15°c, but that's a matter of personal preference. I'd look at their Pulsar jacket or something similar for 15°c. These are better for below 10°c I'd say.
I’m in Melbourne, the Halo would be too hot for me. The Uber light down is just fine for me with just a shirt or t shirt underneath. Depends on if your body generates a lot of heat like me.
Melbourne is 5c-15c at the moment and this jacket is perfect for me. Over 15 c then it's probably too hot

When you buy online, it comes from NZ (unless things have recently changed).

you can only return instore using credit card on web store. If that matters like it does for me then i would recommend that instead. Piece of mind that no errors can occur and i lose money.
I got a Macpac halo last year. It's like a cheatcode to stay warm. I normally layer it with other things but it's greater.
ONly qualm is that it's a bit bulky. It packs down really small but when I'm wearing it it feels a bit weird cooking or things like that. But strong recommend regardless.

I find (for me) that down puffer jackets are fine for sitting or standing around.
Any walking and my armpits get quickly soaked with sweat.
The supermarket is only 10-15 mins away but is enough to get sweaty when wearing one with only a base layer underneath.
I tend to wear a Macpac down vest if there will be any walking.
I found my Sundowner jacket way too warm for Perth so gave it to a relative in NZ.
I've bought a lighter Supernova to sit around camp when I cycle tour WA in winter.
The vest I use if there is to be any walking is the Sundowner vest.

It was very useful last week when we had 5-7 degree mornings!
It does keep you quite warm so not good for mild winter - e.g. 15-18 degree day.

Well, having not seen the latest ALDI offering, I can't say for certain, but most likely:
I have last year's Aldi down jacket (looks the same as this year's) and recently bought a Macpac Halo. I haven't had the Halo long enough to compare warmth of the 2 jackets, but I will say that the Aldi is very decently warm for the price however the Macpac is has a more flattering/fashionable cut (and I expect it will be as warm or warmer than the Aldi jacket).
I don't believe the one from Aldi sale is actually duck down. It's a synthetic down.

I've got the Aldi one from the sale last year and have used it regularly since then. It's very warm (have taken it camping with evenings down to about -3 C with no problems), but the stitching on the internal stuff sack pocket isn't very good and is starting to fail on mine. It's also lighter than this jacket (450 g for my size M vs 540 for this one), which is better if you plan on taking it bushwalking. Not sure of the loft of down in the Aldi jackets, but it is a 90%/10% down-feather mix so it has a higher ratio of down than the Macpac jacket.
Picked one up in-store Brisbane - had heaps there, no navy in medium though.
Warm, but not too bulky and packs into a case like a miniature sleeping bag.
Going to use it in Tassie in a few weeks.

How do these compare to Uniqlo down jackets?
Uniqlo ultra light down has a slightly higher fill power than the Macpac Halo (640 vs 600) however the Halo is much thicker and over twice the weight of the Uniqlo jackets and is therefore much warmer.
I have owned one of these for two years. Got one for my wife too. We both agree that this is the best investment we have ever made for $100.
The level of warmth when outdoors in the elements is paramount - exceptional warmth instantly. At any social events We are the two people content with being outside whilst others freeze is their non-duck down jackets..

Maybe not massive enough for me. I tried it on last weekend, and only 3XL would make it for the zip. I think Im just under 120kg. if I didnt have a beer belly happening then 2XL would be okay.

Yes, I used one on my Winter trip to USA (including NY, Chicago and Niagara Falls). Got down to -16C, with windchill of -25C in windy Chicago, from memory. With proper thermals and layering, I was fine!

i'm normally between a S and a M in size, and got a S but it was too small for me so I ended up selling it and the XS is a tad on the small size but fits better. So I'd say go two sizes down from your usual size.

Definitely handy, especially if you don't tend to wear beanies. We've had a couple of windy days in Melb and the hood is a lifesaver. It's a tight one btw, not a large floppy one (which flips off in the wind).
