Chain of Stores That Sell HDD Docking Stations ?? (IDE in This Case)

Hi guys and gals, Im migrating my aunt and uncle's data from an eight year old pc to a new HP model and went a long drive last week to spend a day copying files and achieve nothing cause the pc is SO slow , 20 min to finish loading windows , another 15 for a page in internet explorer etc … I ended up thinking I'd pop the drive from the older one in the new one so files could be copied over bit by bit BUT its IDE vs the new ones SATA .

Im booked in to go back saturday again , just occurred to me one of those USB docking stations for an IDE drive would be ideal but I dont have time to order online, does anyone know of a chain or large store that has these ? I've looked online but didnt yet find at places like dick smith / officeworks …

Im in Frankston and going up past Eltham for the relatives..

any help would be a life/stress saver!

BIG retail stores like DSE, OW, JBHIFI, will not stock these, most PC shop should have it in stock

Boot your slow pc with a Linux live CD, Ubuntu, Puppy etc then you can copy the files quickly.

  • Use a USB > Sata / Ide adapter cable. About $20 from ebay, complete with power supply (for the IDE), or under $10 if you get just the adapter cable.

  • Does the new HP have IDE as well as SATA, or is IDE defunct? My Asus PB5 mobo has both and it's only a few years old.

  • Great suggestions thanks heaps guys. I'll go for a cable or enclosure rather than having to boot old pc when I realise there are other files in need to go back for.

And no sign of any ide on the mobo, I was very surprised as I hadn't opened a new pc up in 5 years..
