Refillable Printers - Looking for Recommendations Please

Looking for recommendations please.

Just wondering if anyone owns a refillable ink printer like the Epson Eco Tank or Canon Pixma Endurance. I seem to be replacing our inks constantly with 3 school kids.

Thanks in advance.

i have the Canon G2600 which cost me $270. you get what is advertised, though colour will go down noticeably if printing full A4 colour photos. it doesn't have wifi connection but I've setup google cloud print from my PC which is better.

I use $2 generic ink cartridges in my brother, but not sure if newer brother models use chipped cartridges - check the cost of generic ink before you buy a printer. Even with three school kids you may not need a full CISS system.

If you don't need colour I would be looking at a laser mono printer. We just drank ink with our old printers, mainly through them priming the print heads. Since we bought the mono laser printer we haven't bought a new cartridge.

I got an AIO mono laser which also do double side print.

    • Same here.

Inkjets use their ink supply to "clean" their nozzles, either on a time set by the manufacturer or each time it is turned on. I personally think it's a way for the company to screw us on the ink costs. Used to print <100 pages per year and was spending $150+ in colour ink. Now with my laser, I'm printing more than triple that about and my annual toner bill is less than $100.

OP can even consider colour laser printers… they aren't too expensive nowadays. Main weakness is that photos don't come out as well as inkjets, but IMO commercial printers (either in-store or online) do a better, cheaper job than a cheapie home inkjet anyway.

Yes consider getting a (cheap) mono laser printer, and check whether there are generic inks for that model being sold on eBay. Unless you do something like graphic design or art, educators couldn't care less about whether your homework/assignments were printed in colour or B/W.

I bought a Brother HL-1110 3 years ago from Officeworks for $39. Replacement generic cartridges are $15 on eBay and 1 cartridge lasts me a semester at uni - 480 pages (12 weeks of lectures - avg. 40 slides per lecture and 4 slides per page so 10 pages per lecture * 4 subjects) It currently retails for $77 but check during back to school sales you might be able to pick up a good laser printer for $30-50 and just get generic inks off eBay like we do.

Maybe get a small business type printer. It's only going to be more printing as they go through high school and uni.

Most high schools still want hard copy assignments

Continuous Inking Systems is what I use both at home and office, as our printing demands are quite high. I prefer using Brother Printers, when I did my initial research (many aeons ago) Brother ink and print heads are separate, whereas Canon & Epson printheads are a part of the ink caryrdge, therefore not mean for long term use. In other words, brother printheads is supposed to last longer.

Alternatively you can check Ebay if your printer has "refillable" ink cartridges. These are more troublesome as you need to refill more often, but are initially cheaper than the CIS

If your existing printer doesnt have a compatible CIS, then it is still worth replacing the printer to have a compatible system. My last Brother printer has lasted 8yrs of heavy use, only started to clog (youtube has videos on how to clear it, but I havent been successful)

    • +1 for Rihac CISS. I have used them for many years. Support is also 1st class.

Follow installation instructions carefully and you will have problem free printing for a long time. The tanks are also refillable but it takes a long time to empty them in the first place.

The full CISS setup might cost about the same price as a full set of the OEM cartridges and last 10 times longer (rough guess IMO) and ink replenishing is a fraction of cartridge cost.
