  • Great price.

  • Vaguely regretting buying the colorful now :< It'll be fine but if I want to SLI down the track, I suspect it's going to be just that little bit harder to source the exact same card again than something more mainstream/available here.

    • +7

Well, you don't need same brand cards to SLI. You can use a colorful 1080 + gigabyte 1080 given as long as they are the same card (same ram, etc). You will only be limited by the clock speed of the slower card.

      • +2

Forget it.. SLI isn't always supported on every game out there (about 40% games support SLI). You may as well just upgrade it to whatever the latest and greatest is at that time and go from there. I have a 760 SLI setup, under the right conditions will beat a 980.. but not everything supports it.

        • +2

Yea I used to have sli 670. I sold it and got a 980ti. Not going to go sli anymore. Not worth the trouble.

    • +11

SLI and Crossfire really aren't worth the noise, power use, compatibility limitations and bugs.
      They should be deprecated imo.
When you want to upgrade later, just Gumtree the 1080 and buy a new card.

Are the comment above mine says, you can sli different versions of the 1080. It's the same chipset.

      • I've got a 1070 right now, and would happily SLI it for a cheaper upgrade path. I used to run SLI back with 480s and it was very stable. I have had terrible experiences with Crossfire though and would never try it again

        • The experience with Nvidia isn't any better. SLI/Crossfire have patchy game support at best and sometimes they outright just don't work. SLI or Crossfire should be a last resort, definitely would NOT recommend it to anyone as an upgrade path.

        • @gromit: That is a bit too much of a blanket statement tho. For some, one application that gets a boost is enough. eg Multi monitor racing or flight sims. Some people build whole cockpits in their garage.
          Let alone professional applications.

        • @Major Mess: yes that's true if you have VERY specific setups or games that benefit, even then you are usually better off with higher end cards than compromising on lower end SLI/Crossfire due to instability problems that come with the crappy drivers. But for the average person/gamer I would happily say avoid, it makes no sense.

    • +1

Many games nowadays don't even fully optimise for SLi.

Multiple GPU setups are getting more uncommon nowadays

    • I own this card and would take the Colorful over it.

The colorful has additional power connectors (this only has a single 8pin. but not that it matters with a 1080 as they will still hit 2.0ghz+ with a single 8 pin), and a better cooler.

Those aren't reason enough though, it's the the coil whine of this card that is the worst I have ever heard, making me not recommend it. It's not just noticeable, it's outright distracting if you have a quite PC or don't use headphones/loud speakers when gaming.

  • +1

Bought, good upgrade for my gtx970. Any idea when the next gen cards are expected to come out?

    • Q4 2018 afaik.

    • video comment from nvidia ceo

      • +4

Saying anything else would result in people waiting and not buying the current generation though.

        • Exactly. Right at the end "a long time from now" lol.

Especially because there is an oversupply of nvidia cards right now too. They do not want people waiting.

        • yeah so that would mean we aren't getting anything new until they get rid of their inventory or amd is actually competitive with their 7nm vega chips

        • Osbourne effect.. lol

        • nvidia rumour is that start pre-selling on 30th July, for release in August. I have seen nothing about AMD.

        • @bchliu: what we have to bite the heads off bats?

  • Thanks OP. Awesome price!
    Cheers

    Dupe - removed

  • +1

    Hawt diggity dawg!!!!
Almost worth replacing my 1070 at that price!

    • I wouldn't. Resale on 2nd hand gpus is disgustingly bad these days. Had a guy offer me 300 for my 1070. Lol

      • -1

300 for a 1070 might sound like a joke now, but it will be a reality very soon for a second hand 1070.

        • +2

Yeah, it cost me US$210 to get a 6GB 1060 in 2016 (when I last built a PC). I could have picked up a 1070 for US$370, but decided it wasn't worth almost twice the price.

Prices are just returning to where they were two years ago. With usual component depreciation, in a normal world, a used 1070 would be lucky to be worth AU$250 now.

        • @marlor:

Fully agree with you there, not only are the pricing starting to return to normal, but they are reducing as well. Finally the high tide has passed and we can all go back to actually looking at deals for the components on our lists.

  • +1

    Fantastic deal,

The prices of 1080s in the past few months have been really cheap.

Regret buying my second hand strix for 650 not long ago

  • Pretty solid first post even being sleep deprived. Some first posts are like Item price no store or link or description.

    • Haha yea, I cut my teeth on comp posts so it at least wasn't my very first post on the site, just the first deal, I just had to edit this one several times for things like adding the postage costs for non eBay plus members in title and the link to TA's post.

  • +1

Picked up the MSI gaming X for almost the same price a few days ago, but this is a great get!

    • +1

Yea nice I didn't even see the Gaming X one the other day, great cards those.

    • What was that deal?

  • I'll wait for next-gen cards to be released - see what prices are like then. I've waited this long, what's a few more months.

    • +1

      false economy imho.

new cards are going to be way more expensive that last time.
AU price? who knows but 1200 for the next gen 1180 prob isnt far off..

for what? 30% improvement for 190% price?

my 1080 is awesome an will do everything . if you need / want 4k@60… well thats probably the only reason

      • i want to wait for next gen card because it will push the current pascal model price down. you think that will be the case? btw only planning to buy used Pascal card too.

      • I meant that hopefully it means a further reduction in 1080, 1080ti

      • I wait because I already got 1080 2 years ago. But 30%? That's GTX 1080 Ti, the 1180 will be at min 20% better than 1080 Ti or nobody would bother.

  • Worth the upgrade from Asus 1070 STRIX? Only plate Fortnite @ 1080P. Can't maintain 144FPS on epic settings

    • Hey if you need the frames you need the frames, I probably wouldn't bother, but I can't afford it in the first place so what do I know? lol

    • +15

No, it's not worth playing Fortnite.

    • I'm sorry to hear that.

    • Definitely! need to enjoy that fortnite experience fam

      • Fortnite and PUBG are amazing games to play with friends. The best ones I can think of in recent years. I haven't had as much fun playing games with mates as I have since Borderlands.

As a single player experience I can't think of anything more frustrating and anticlimatic. Spend ~20 minutes just getting loot to die to someone you can't see, rinse and repeat. There's no progression, nothing to work towards. Even when winning it's like, "yessss I went through all those really bad games to feel a win and doesn't feel anywhere near as good as I thought it would".

        • +1

Nah your mates are the reason you're having fun, the games suck.

  • Same question worth upgrade from 1070 to this? Mainly bf1 and next will be bf5

    • That depends on you. Is the increase in frame rate worth it to you?

You can surely look at the benchmarks and see what the performance delta is (10-40% depending on resolution and game engine). Is that worth the money?

For me, I'd say no. Hell, I game at 1080p, and am happy with my 6GB 1060. But for some people, it would absolutely be worth it.

  • For someone who only expects to be doing light gaming (still wanting at least 60FPS on at least 1080p), is this overkill? This price is pretty good though.

    • +1

Depends on the game, but it sounds like for that you can get away with a 1070 easily, if you want to save a bit of dough.

1080 is and will be a great card for games for years to come, though. Sure, it probably won't deal with 4K as well as future cards will, but neither will the 1080 Ti which is top of the line at the moment.

I'd say yes to overkill, but it will last a long time if that's what you are after.

      • You're absolutely tempting me to pull the trigger. I definitely want to delay upgrade for as long as possible.

    • Define "light gaming".

      • Sorry, that was pretty vague (and probably a useless description). Moreso meant infrequent - but that's also a useless descriptor. I'll predominantly be using the PC as a workstation, but wanting to play some games on the side.

        • +1

That is still very vague, The problem is not how often you play, but what you play. If you play the occasional WoW or World of tanks together with a few other less demanding games then this is big time overkill. If you are playing newly released games and wanting the best settings enabled then this is probably fine.

        • Agreeing with gromit. That said, I've been managing fine with a 1060 3gb, playing most current demanding games at custom medium-high settings (ultra is a stretch for 60fps).

    • +2

A 1060 6gb would probably do the job, but it's nice not having to worry about badly optimised games / the future.

  • Finally, been waiting 6 months for a good price, thanks OP.

  • +2

I have this card and it has the worst coil whine I have ever heard in my life when under load. When there's a very short stutter in fps, the coil whine goes away during that stutter which is incredibly annoying. It's like when you get used to the sound of something really annoying and it changes just enough to make you aware of it again.

It's not just one sound either, there's like 5 different types of whine depending on the type of load.

I've had to resort to using a custom MSI Afterburner voltage/frequency curve so that the card uses less power (I still hit 2.0ghz though) in order to quieten it down a little.

Hope you guys get one without coil whine, have loud computer fans or wear headphones while gaming.

    • Sad to hear that. I only had a PSU with coil whine and it was so annoying I ended up buying a new one that was much worse just to get rid of the coil whine.

      • Strangely enough, if I kept my old PSU (a very loud and pre-80plus era Coolermaster 650w from 2005) - I may not have noticed the coil whine.

I got a Corsair TX750W 80plus gold at the same time, as I was a little worried about a 12 year old PSU with a new $600+ GPU. It's basically silent even at full load (which for me is less than 400w even when OCed everything). I had also got a 120mm CLC and silent case fans so it made no sense to have that turbo prop sounding PSU in my computer anymore.

So I have a very quite PC apart from the incredibly loud coil whining 1080. 6 months on and it still pisses me off.

        • +1

Ah that sucks man. I have a stock intel cooler and a reference RX480 cooler so my PC can get quite noisy when under full load but it's still nothing bad and pretty much non existent when there's audio playing through my headphones. Something like a coil whine is so much worse than the sound of fans. Why have you not RMA'd your card? I buy everything used so I'm not quite sure on how it works but a coil whine should be a good enough reason to ask for a replacement/refund.

        • @Basimx:

I haven't RMAed it yet because I got it from an eBay sale from a New Zealand store in Jan $680. Gigabyte, like most manufactures that aren't EVGA, don't have a global warranty. I would have to ship it back to New Zealand Gigabyte. That coupled with the possibility of getting one back with the same or worse coil whine has put me off doing it.

I really should though. I've put a reminder to contact Gigabyte about it on Monday.

It's going to be a tough sell though, do I tell them I've had it for 6 months as is? Tell them it just started? Tell them something else is wrong with the card? I'm leaning towards saying the coil whine just started and is no longer acceptable to use in my situation and will be requiring an RMA to get a card without whine.

You got it though, fan noise is nothing compared to the alternating squeeling/grinding/popping noises coil whine makes as the load shifts. Even that stock cooler and blower on the 480, while loud, is kind of easy to forget about.

        • +1

@c0balt: Don't mention when it started. Just say there's a coil while that's unbearable and you'd like it fixed. I wouldn't straight up ask for a refund or a replacement as that kind of gives off the wrong vibe you know? but I doubt they'd fix it, probably would just send another one down once you ship yours to them to confirm the coil whine. If they ask I'd just say 'recently'. I don't know how it will go to be honest, just co-operate, be nice, be patient and I'm sure everything will go smoothly.
If you have the spare money I'd buy a temporary card off gumtree because in my experience if you bought something this expensive online it can take a while to get it sorted :P

  • Would an old mobo from 2011 be able to run this (obviously degraded)? I have a GTX 670 currently and now looking to put my next 7-8yr computer together piecemeal, starting with the GPU, get mobo/cpu in a good price, and finally the old Ram.

    • +1

Yes. The 670 uses PCIE and about the same input watts and TDP as a 1080 at full load. This card will most likely be a little long though, so make sure it physically can fit inside the case you have.

Check to see if your PSU has an 8pin 12v plug. PSUs from around then sometimes came with only 6 pin connectors (even if they had really high wattage available on the 12v rail), but you can buy a 6 to 8 pin connector extremely cheaply off eBay.

      • There’s a few more inches of room behind the 670, any longer it’ll have to protrude out the front end of my ATX case. Heh. Thanks, time to pull the trigger on this one.

        • If it's an ATX case, you shouldn't have any problems.

I will say that it has the worst coil whine I've ever heard in any card. It's distracting and ~6 months after getting it, I have not got any more used to it. So maybe wait for another one where there's not many reports of bad coil whine. Always a chance if you got this it won't have any though, but something to consider before pulling the trigger.

    • I have an Intel I5-2600K and the CPU would be the bottleneck if I stuck in a GTX 1080. I currently have a GTX 1060 6GB and love it,had it what 2 years now?

  • +3

Thank you for this post.. Kinda… :D

You turned my Friday into a big spend day as after a quick chat with the mrs I dropped coins on 2 of these cards to upgrade our gtx570 and gtx770 machines so this should be a considerable upgrade.

Have a top weekend, thanks OP :D

    • GTX 580 owner here. Enjoy. I wish I got this deal!

  • +2

I cant get PUNCHY to work :c

    • same to me.

      • Looks like it no longer works?!

        • Asked eBay team, they don't know what happened. they will contact me later and send me new code.

        • @xiaohu: great! Keep us updated! cheers

  • The new cards are on the horizon no point buying this card

    • +1

They will obviously be expensive, so it might make sense to buy these beasts at cheaper rates..

      • Sure :) when will these cheaper rates appear?

        • +1

they are already cheap now compared to $1000 or over earlier.

    • +3

If you followed that advice then you would never buy.

  • :)
