Telstra Velocity New Internet

Evening all,

Just wondering if anyone has had the issue of connecting to a Telstra Velocity area. I recently moved to a new house and the only connection that I've been told thats available is Telstra Velocity (Fibre run by Telstra).

I checked online and they have 24 month Plans, ranging from $69 to $129. However I'd rather be casual incase I need to move again in 12 months. They offer casual plans which requires a $99 Connection (even though telstra has been used at this address before) and a $120 casual fee + they are demanding you pay for there Telstra Smart Modem for a whopping $216! I don't even need a new modem… I asked a rep in chat and they said It's required however I know people that are on this connection and they use there own modems just fine.

What are my choices here? Any inputs appreciated. Also if I must go with them should I go for a 24month contract? Is there massive costs of trying to get out of these?

Cheers.

  • Telstra's early termination fees are generally pretty reasonable for internet - probably about $15/month. It almost always pays to go the 24 month contract and get the install fee waived. You may even be able to move without taking the penalty by re-contracting with another Telstra service when you move. Do the maths on both options.

  • Have you tried this deal yet OP? It's excellent value, and for your needs, it would be perfect as long as they offer velocity in it.

    • Oh I never saw this. If they offer Velocity connection that could be amazing :) Cheers!

      • No worries! Might be worth calling tomorrow to ask and setting it up before COB saturday if you want to get it because that's when it ends

        • Just checked terms and conditions "Service not available to all areas, homes or customers.
The type of service offered (the nbn™ network, ADSL, ADSL2+,
Cable & Velocity) may be subject to further qualification checks
to determine what’s available at your location. " So it should be (Velocity)! Thanks a bunch mate! Signed up and hopefully get contacted tomorrow.

That's awesome to hear :) It really is a cracker of a deal, we're on it at the moment, and the cost saving it brings is insane! Even if it's $99 per month, better than paying $216 for the modem or being locked in for 24 months! Plus you get a free TTV2 and a free month!

Only thing that confuses me is that it says when you buy any TV? I hope it doesnt require a TV to be bought. If so I will and just return it.

        • @iJustinz:

Ahh yeah I didn't even notice that, I can confirm when I went in and did it, it definitely didn't require a TV purchase, hopefully you can get it sorted :)

MATE Your a life saver. I signed up in store today and had not issues. They rang me before and confirmed I could signup to the velocity only as NBN wasn't available. No contract free modem + 1 month free + Telstra TV free + No connection fee. Saved me $400+ dollary doos. Thanks for that.

  • Hey mate
I have lived in a Velocity estate for 9 years and I have been working for Telstra for 3 years.

Telstra is your only option as it's a special connection they have set up. I was told once there are 1 or 2 velocity estates that can go with other providers but there isn't a market for it.

With velocity, request for the ultimate speed boost for free. They did it for me and they will be able to do it for you. Telstra doesn't know I work under their banner as I'm part of a franchise store, so that discount is not unique to employees. The max Velocity speed is 100 down & 5 up. No idea why only 5 up… But it's what it is.

I say go 24 mth so less upfronts. You won't be charged ETC's if you move as you will just be changing technology type. I have moved from Velocity now to a NBN FTTP connection where the only difference is upload speed. I just had to pay the standard move fee of $89.

If you have to cancel your bundle after 12 months and have chosen to go to another provider… Your ETC's will be $384 (if you went the $79 bundle).

Personally I would go the $79 bundle (which I'm on) as $69 100gb generally isn't enough and unlimited is unnecessary. 1000gb is generally overkill as well but we currently don't have any inbetween offers. In my 3 year career in the bussiest Telstra store in Australia, I have only seen 4 accounts where more than 1tb is used regularly.

    Hope this helps :)

    • Thanks for your input! Great info with the speedboost. I'm gonna try use that deal from JBHIFI as above, it seems like the best idea to get on a no contract offer with all the perks. Cheers

      • Only issue may be how they process things. From a store level we can't touch velocity. It's a call up only thing, as you get transfered to the velocity department. I doubt anyone in JB hi-fi will be able to provision it, unless they don't actually provision in store (some onsellers just complete an online form and another department takes care of the order).

Let me know how it goes 👍

Signed up today and was called a few minutes ago to confirm that NBN isn't available (I knew it wasn't). However he said Telstra Velocity was available and has signed me up to that. So it look's like they do velocity no issues at all. (It did say they offer it in the terms and conditions)

So I saved myself the $400+ dollars on having to sign up to a casual or a 24 month contract.

  • You need to sign up first and they will confirm the connection again. It is showing on their website that Velocity is available it doesn’t mean the Velocity connection is available.

I was on the same situation and I only got ADSL broadband, speed was extremely slow, NBN is not available yet. It happens with the new area.

It also took 3 months for them to connect my internet, I was offered interim service in the meantime. Telstra is completely useless but I have no other choices and I had to sign up with them.

    • Signed up today and was called a few minutes ago to confirm that NBN isn't available (I knew it wasn't). However he said Telstra Velocity and ADLS2+ were available and I could sign up to them.

So I saved myself the $400+ dollars on having to sign up to a casual or a 24 month contract.
