Modern RTS Games

I used to love C&C, Red Alert, Generals, etc etc when they were big hits back in the day. Can anyone recommend any more modern RTS games that are of similar style?

I like the "Build base, produce units, attack enemy" type RTS. Not really a starcraft fan or alien type ones but will give anything a go….

Any suggestions?

You can build stuff in PUBG and Fortnight!

    (only kidding haha)

I'm pretty out of it too. Old (but newer than C&C RA, etc): Supreme Commander and Supreme Commander 2 are ones that come to mind (spiritual heirs to Total Annihilation). There's also a new Age of Empires game that's out (or out soon?). If resource collection isn't as essential, you can check out the Total War series - I think the newest one is Thrones of Brittania. Obviously this, and the AOE one are medieval than sci-fi.

    • I have played a few of the total war games in the past but not any of the recent ones. Have they improved/changed much? I found the field battles quite boring to be honest and enjoyed the world domination civ aspects to them more. But then i have Civ6 as a good turn based game already. I was more interested if there are some modern RTS games out there that i should try. I guess I do like the resource collection ones….

      • Yeah, the Total War games aren't for me either. I don't know. I've always been a big (large-scale, so not Starcraft)(sci-fi) RTS fan but there just haven't been any recently. And by "recently" I kind of mean in basically the entire past decade.

age of empires 2 HD is still lots of fun, especially with friends against computer. We often play for the stats page. $5 on special.

Company of heroes is often $5 or less and was a great evolution of the RTS style.

    • Loved COH, though I really don't like calling it an RTS. It's very solidly a "Real-Time (Squad) Tactics" kind of game.

Try Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, it's the only 'recent' RTS I've played which felt similar to the old mechanics of C&C, Red Alert and Starcraft where you can plonk a base somewhere on the map and start spitting out units.

I recently picked up Total War: Warhammer and the best way I can describe it is a mix between Civ 6 and a battlefield tactics simulator, I really like it but I can understand it's probably not everybody's cup of tea.

Sudden Strike 4 also isn't bad, unless you're a stickler for detailed WW2 battle sims, in which case you'll probably hate it because it's a bit arcade-y.

    • Thanks I'll investigate Sudden Strike 4, never heard of that series. Sounds up my alley…

It's not exactly new (and it is set in a space/scifi setting), but Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, and Dawn of War 2 were a blast to play

Otherwise, for a more challenging WW2 experience Company of heroes 1 or 2

Steam summer sale is on now, so grab them cheap.

RTS games are sadly few and far between these days as you don't work on consoles, so less revenue for developers.

I'm loving this Steam Early Access RTS game called They Are Billions. It's a 2D RTS game where the object is to defend a base from hordes of zombies so quite different from traditional RTS.

    • Have also heard good things about this one.

    • It is single player only but you literally get the feeling of dread in this game. One zombie getting into your base can end your run!!!

Thanks OP, now I want to reinstall C&C or AoE.

    • As my 2 year old would say…

      “Good welcome”

Grey Goo is worth your time, https://store.steampowered.com/app/290790/Grey_Goo/

Men of War Assault Squad series if you can forego base building, https://store.steampowered.com/app/244450/Men_of_War_Assault…

Wargame series if you really like military vehicles, https://store.steampowered.com/sub/45320/

Creeper World series if you really like indies and base building, https://store.steampowered.com/app/280220/Creeper_World_3_Ar…

I hear good things about FrostPunk, more base building https://store.steampowered.com/app/323190/Frostpunk/

  • Anyone know any iOS versions for iPad?

  • How about an older RTS game like Dune 2? It's under 4 MB.

    • Original and not the remake! Nostalgia it is a yes but you will go insane with the controls if you are used to more modern rts.

    • hah I played it back in the day. one of my first games ever. but the graphics are a bit…… ummm….

      bloody sandworms!

  • Company of Heroes 2 is a great game to have a look at. Not as focused on the base building aspect but more on resource/point control.

Not sure how active the online community is these days, but bot skirmishes are solid.

  • Honestly I have been collecting older titles because of the lack of modern rts games as you have perfectly sayed.

Some interesting titles I have come across are:

    Original War
Sorry I got super tired and decided to just look up RTS strategy classic base building games and cbb to post then all here Lmao lol

  • Age of Empires 3 is still pretty solid, and works great in multi.

  • Supreme commander 1 - forged alliance.

There is an active (but small) online community "forged alliance forever".

If you're clear that you're a noob you can find people to play with that won't rage.

Don't jump straight into any 4v4s though.

Do you prefer PvP or vs AI? Manner options for the latter, not so many for the former aside from starcraft 2.

Act of aggression reboot edition is good vs AI.

Dawn of war 3 is ok vs AI. I never won a MP game though. Can be picked up for cheap on cdkey sites.

Starcraft 2 is free to play now, I suggest you start there.

Dawn of war 2 still had a few people playing last I checked.

Company of heroes is good too. But these last 2 options have little/no base building.

Spellforce 3 is out, I didn't like it, but might pique your interest.

Warhammer total war 1 is about 15usd on cdkey sites (and the recent steam sale). Great for real time battles - no base building though.

  • Used to Love C&C Generals, but the memory is better than the actual re-playing of the game - which is not unexpected.

I got into the Wargame games (Wargame: European Escalation and Wargame: Red Dragon). It was good because you handled modern day units such as tanks, helicopters and jets.. Concept was quite fun but it's a very large scale game so controlling so many units in the one go was a bit tricky.
