Accidentally Withdraw 50,000YEN From Tokyo 7/11

A warm Hello Ozb,

I accidentally withdrew 50kYEN while in Tokyo from my ING account which was $619.24AUD @ a 7/11 ATM,

Question is, is there anyway i can deposit the funds back &
Did I just lose a bunch of $$AUD by doing that??

Thank you

Probably not. Best to just spend it if you don't want to hold onto foreign currency.

    • Considered that ;p

  • An excuse to make a trip to Japan :)

Isn't he/she already there ? More like an excuse to spend the money

Congrats! You can now afford a taxi to the airport!

    • !!

    • You could just take the *Liner like everyone else…

The standard non-express train system is hella cheap, $13 or something.

it's ok you can tell us.

only reason i mentioned that is i've seen it happen before

        • Are you Nigerian by any chance?

Check your bank account for transaction fees, then look at the amount to find out what your conversion rate was.

Then go out tonight and spend it on hookers!

But don't sleep with them! Save yourself for marriage boy, the lord is watching.
And he's getting excited… a little too excited

  • Try your hand at being a Forex speculator. Hold onto the YEN until it's worth more (or the AUD tanks), voila, profit!

  • Sake.

    • Alcohol is super cheap there, so that's a lethal amount of sake…

  • Few kgs of whale meat.

    Pachinko

  • Withdraw more that only give you 2 hours of pleasures…

    What do you mean ?

Foreign exchange fees he/she wasn't anticipating.

If you change back to Aussie then you have done 10% - 15%
Option (a) save till your next trip to Japan or option (b) take a trip and try to flog the note to someone heading off to Japan

    • Bit of a loss for hey, probably go with Option A but don't think i'll be back for another 2 years so would had rather banked it, and there's always someone else in the office heading off to Japan so Option B may work, thanks for tips!

ING has no foreign exchange/ATM fees if u deposit $1000 and make 5+ purchases a month, did u meet those requirements? There's many items cheaper in Japan than Aus, lots of savings (spendings) to be had.

    • Requirements met for ING, been using my ING card for most purchases here where it's accepted,

And agree 100%, alot of savings to be had and I've already filled my suitcase with the goodies. Maybe i'll do round 2 of the Robot Show lol

  • We had a similar experience in Switzerland where we got keyboard bounce with the ATM and took out more money than we wanted to; however, we seemed to have no problem with spending it anyway so it was the universe's way of giving us a hand.

    • That's hilarious, it paid off then??

I've already purchased enough items to fill my suitcase, and not bothered enough to purchase and lugg around another one

We still had about 7 days left travelling around Switzerland so we paid with cash rather than card for a few places.

Go find a really nice place to have a good meal. We try to be careful when we are travelling but we also figure we spent a wad of dosh getting somewhere so skimping on experiences is a false economy.

  • If you're going to be in the country for more than a couple days, it shouldn't really matter as you'll spend it anyways. Aside from that you can try exchanging it and lose a bit.

I did this once in Vietnam, till I realised that VND50,000 was only about $3.50 Australian… :D

You would accidentally draw a few millions and still would not freak out lol.

How much did you want to get out?

Too late now, just use cash payments for everything and use up the money.

Its ONLY $600 and you're on holidays, not that hard to spend it!

You could always change it over at the airport on the way out/back to aus.

    • My guess would be 5000 yen.

      • +2

$60 AUD then? Why bother in the first place ;)

  • If you have any more accomodation bills to settle, pay those with cash. Otherwise just go and do all the things in Tokyo.

  • You will need to convert it back to AUD then deposit when you get back to Australia.
Unfortunately you loose on the exchange rate both ways.

Citibank has Global currency accounts. You might be able to do something with them.
You can deposit JPY straight into one of these accounts and exchange when it suits you or just purchase goods in JPY

  • Just use cash to pay for hotel etc if you haven't already prepaid.

  • What’s the problem?

  • I'd recommend Mario Kart style driving if you get the chance

Duty free shop. Buy Hibiki 21 Year Old Fuji Limited Edition whisky that costs 50k yen at the duty free shop which sells for 1500-2500$ in Australia. Unfortunately, it is always out of stock.
