  • I am skeptical of the claim that this is a genuine IPS panel. On the MSI wesbite it says ‘IPS-Level’. Sounds like marketing bs for TN.

MSI said it uses AUO B156HAN08.0, which is an AHVA panel, and AHVA is indeed IPS level/class panel, not a TN panel in disguise.

      • Good to know!

      • interesting they call it AHVA

        easily confused with VA panels

  • I don't know why but I but I feel like even if this were a gtx 1070 and 1440p screen I still would not want it at this price and I just don't know why. Guess I was believing or hoping that by now we would have made laptops in this price level come with a 1070 minimum and 1080p slowly starting to feel old. That or I'm just wishing a little bit too much ahead of time.

    I dunno.

    • Do they even make 144hz + 1440p screen laptops?

    • Im almost certain you can get full 1070 laptops at this price (pretty sure acer and gigabyte have options around here). The advantage of the the GS is how small and light it is, with the addition of a very good battery life, compared to the other 1070s laptops. The 1070 version of the GS is max q however, but from going through the forums it seems if they still have some overclocking potential. However they do have that enforced power limit so not sure how much that may be.

Yeah 1070 laptops are in this price range but the cpu will most likely only be 7700HQ and 60hz refresh rate. Prove me wrong.

Did some crazy researching and this cpu i7-8750H is a multi core beast and about 9% increase in single core performance over the old common king the i7-7700HQ and roughly 50% increase in multi core.

So for a workstation laptop it is a beast but it can also form as a beast high fps 1080p gaming laptop.. wow love the versatility.

Price feels more justified now but man a 1070 would have been nice at this price point maybe lower for a 1060.

        My two cents.

Metabox prime s is a good alternative to consider

    • Whats the reviews on these laptops? Heard the brand but haven't heard much about the products.

      • Metabox itself is fine. But the clevo model of Metabox light weight series (Metabox Prime S) is prone to overheating: the keyboard can get as high as 50 degrees during intensive gaming. If you want one get the other models.

  • Is the screen gysnc?

    • I did researched this laptop at one stage and from what I remember it's gsync capable. Meaning they can make it available with an update. Problem is if they enable gsync the graphics card has to drive the display 100% of the time instead of a mix of CPU graphics which kills battery life.

I got this laptop shortly after it got released and have used it for almost a couple of months now. You definitely pay a price premium over many other 1060 laptops but this is probably much more portable and barring some flexing, physically feels very polished as well. The thin bezels also feel very nice. I use it full time for work (web developer) and never had an issue with speed.

Got one a few days ago because I'm a FIFO worker and wanted to play some games while away. You can get a Dell Inspiron 7000 with a GTX 1060 for much cheaper. But it has a bigger footprint which wouldn't have suited my frequent travel. Laptop actually arrived the next day from Computer Alliance, so that was rather good service.

One interesting thing to note about this laptop is it's motherboard is upside down compared to most. So to access the RAM slots or extra M.2 port you'll have to fully disassemble. So for anyone wanting to add extra storage keep that in mind. Fine for me as I plan to replace the TIM anyway. But might put off some people as you can't easily swap the RAM or add an extra drive.

    • Thanks for mentioning this. For anyone who want to disassemble this laptop: you might have to go to a service centre to disassemble. If you disassemble it yourself the warranty is void.

This is a great price for this, good looking machine. Checkout Dave2D's review on it (his laptop reviews are great).

Too bad they only have the 1060 and not the 1070 version

    • +1

The 1070 version is sold out. The price would be $3399*0.85=$2889, and only 1070 Max Q for the $550 extra. I would rather stick with this one.

They also had full strength gtx 1070 ASUS GM501GS which was sold out in less than one hour after the 15% off deal started :(

      • Not sure if you've seen it, the 1060 version ASUS GM501GM is up for sale on their ebay store. I can't post the link for some reason, sorry.

        Works out to be $2999x0.85 = $2549.15
