Just a reminder that Book Depository will start charging GST on all orders with "a customs value of $1000 or less" from July.
Will books ordered offshore still be cheaper than purchasing in Aus? Mostly not except for some titles according to Booktopia chief executive Tony Nash who rolls out the "level the playing field" line and says the money will go directly into health and education and a mysterious category called "etc":
"It will level the playing field on the bulk of their titles but on some titles they'll still be competitive because of the availability of international editions and their aggressive [pricing] stance.
"More importantly, the Australian public will know the money they're sending offshore, 10 per cent of that will go back into funding health and education etc."

I'm not sure what books he is referring to because most books I order are significantly cheaper from offshore, even with an extra 10% and sometimes postage added.
So the Amazon owned Book Depository has figured out how to collect GST but the rest of Amazon can’t? I guess this was just the excuse they wanted to try to promote a disappointing venture into the land of Oz…
