Nokia 7 Plus 4GB RAM/ 64GB $375 AUD ($276.18 USD) @ Joybuy

700

Was on the lookout for one of these after I botched the repair on my Pixel 2 XL, this was the closest thing I could get for 50% the price.
Super cheap, similar if not cheaper than last time. Deal only lasts for another 8.5hrs.

Also on special is Sharp Aquos S2, $155 USD for Blue, 4gb, Plastic, which seems insane for what you get

Awesome price for a great phone.

  • Is this easily localised to AU or some form of global English firmware?

  • Haven't seen comments about people using the chinese ROM on this phone… and flashing to global for OTA updates…. ?

    • +2

Yep, im reading that now and it looks like it might? be possible? But ive canceled my order, I dont want a cn phone without the ww firmware
      EDIT:
      You can totally do it:
      https://forum.xda-developers.com/nokia-7-plus/how-to/how-to-…

      Im reordering lol

      • Read the last few pages… some people seem to be still having difficulties?

        • +2

          OP cancelling order again?

      • Is this something a total newbie can do easily? Just don't want to take the risk of bricking a new phone

        • I'm still waiting for first hand reports …. doesn't seem to be that many. Out of the box it will work fine… but not sure about updates… other features or gcam.. to use googles camera to improve photo quality.

        • @tlai:
Out of the box I immediately got an OTA update to 8.1 for the 6gb version.

I downloaded google camera from here:
          https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera

Great photos, better than the original Nokia app, but the zoom function doesn't seem to work for me on the Gcam app. Might need to figure out what's going on.

        • @piejustice:

Do you have the June 8.1 updates? Apparently "Bear in mind that most of the later versions are not working since the June security update." for gcam.

        • @tlai:

I believe that comment is saying the more recent versions of the Google Camera hack aren't working.
          The recommended version still works.

        • @piejustice: What's your front camera resolution when using Gcam? I can only see 4MP max

        • @Sheppy:
Same here, I tried a couple different gcam apks as well, same thing

      • Hey how exactly one does this? I mean where is the root directory?
Maybe using software from this link https://www.xda-developers.com/root/?

  • -1

    B28?

    • It has it.

    • Yes. (If TA1062)

      • Yep, it's TA 1062

  • If I buy now and it will arrive Australia after 1/7, do I need to pay the post tax and GST? Thanks.

    • +6

Everybody is curious about that and no one actually knows the answer. So we will see.

      • Haha Id rather not risk it. Why give more money to the bloody government when we pay enough tax already and the American multinationals (Holden…) dont pay shit.

You can get a Nokia 6 from HN for about $350 anyways. (less if you got Amex deal)

        • the 7 plus is still pricey in australia ….. jb hi-fi sell them but last time i looked was $600.

    • +1

Given my Aquos S2 was held up at customs AND Joybuy clearly mark the purchase price of the item on the parcel, I would be inclined to say yes, a custom's 10% gst bill will be accompanying the delivery.

    • +6

From what I read a while back (talking about over a year ago here), isn't the e retailer supposed to be responsible for taxing the items ($<1000) that come from overseas? If it's still that way, e-retailers are supposed to collect it at checkout.

They made a big point about trying to get large e-retailers to get on board with it.

      • +2

This is how understand things to be.

Cost to monitor incoming goods (valued at less than $1000) and apply tax to them is exceeded by the tax collected.

      • i'll just add this to make things clearer. If you dont pay tax at checkout, I don't think you'll be paying gst tax for the purchase at all. So an item like this won't be held for tax purposes or anything like that, as the retailer is supposed to collect it.

    • +3

My guess is no. The government is relying on sellers to collect the tax. It's too expensive and too much hassle for Australia Post or anyone here to collect it. I'll be ordering from GST-free sellers from now on!

  • +1

Might be worth putting in title that it's the 4GB/64GB version

  • at the very bottom of the description it says

"Modle: Nokia 7 Plus(root & flash to global Version)"

could that mean they're all switched over to global version or is this a suggestion?

    • Depends on the variant / phone model number

      • It's the TA-1026, but that can definitely be flashed with the global rom

        • +1

          Sure not TA-1062?

        • @closey: sorry yep, my dyslexia sorry!

    • They haven't flashed the global rom, but it's pretty straightforward, check my comment above

    • +1

mate manages a phone store in the city and they decided as a business not to stock nokia's 6 months ago due to so many returns (faults). completely turned me off nokia as an option and especially one from overseas otherwise i would have jumped on this.

  • 6gb ram version is $308 US might be worth considering but I'm holding back due to the warranty I'm not sure how it works with these guys.

    • 6gb version is china only model the 4gb is same as AU bit different firmware …they are android one phones outside of china question is initial flash without root and if it then gets ota.

      • In the XDA thread I posted above people were getting ota updates after they installed worldwide firmware. It isn't installed from the factory though, no. I would be weary getting the 6gb, haven't seen anything on XDA indicating whether it works or not, but it definitely works with the 4gb variant.

        • Bought the 6gb phone from the previous post here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/382999

Received it yesterday. Came with 8.1 OTA update immediately after connecting to wifi. Had to install google play myself but pretty easy to do.

How do I know if I'm on the global version?

        • if it takes playstore as an update it’s global.

        • @piejustice: Hi was curious, if you select English were there still any software or aspects of the phone in Chinese? Thank you

        • @Kaiserkid7:
The only thing I can see that is still in Chinese is the Chinese app store. For me thats fine, I use google play store anyways.

        • @piejustice: I also bought the 6GB version and still waiting, you can find the build number on your phone by navigating to Settings > System > About Phone.
          If your Build Number is:
          “00WW”, global supported
          “00CN" CN version

        • @excite:
          Build number is 00CN_2_13C_SP01
So I guess its Chinese firmware.

        • @excite: Can the 6GB version be converted to Global as well, or is it only the 4GB?

        • @Sheppy:

          Hanging on this question too.
@excite says he/she is still waiting on delivery.
Can't be too far away not though.

        • @Sheppy: I do think to convert to global, but do you know the difference between CN version and global? looks like the CN version also works fine and gets OTA updates

        • @excite:
Yes, currently using the CN version, security update is as at 1 May 2018 right now, so not the latest June patch. Other than that, I'm not sure what the other differences are between CN and global version.

        • +3

          @piejustice:
Using the XDA link, I managed to install the global version on the 6GB version. Need to adb sideload the zip file in recovery mode though, and wait a while on the Nokia start screen on the first bokt after downgrade from Android P.

        • @piejustice:

Have you experienced any issues with the phone? What difference between the global version and CN? What frequency does the 6GB have?

        • +2

          @tlai:
After switching to the global version, none really as of yet.

Differences between the global and CN version to me seemed to be:
          - Google apps on the global version
          - better integration of Google apps, things like Google assistant didn't seem to work out too well for me, had to keep resetting the default for it
          - for both my friend and I on the CN version, we couldn't receive text messages but could send them out
          - I think by default, apps seemed to be killed while running in the background on the CN version. This meant that WhatsApp messages wouldn't show a notification until I opened up the app. I couldn't find the toggle for this really
          - CN version has face unlock which worked well (friends tried unlocking it with a photo of me and didn't work), which I can't find on the global version, which is quite strange.
          - both versions seem to be on the 1 May security update at the moment
          - swipe up on the CN version takes you to a search page, not the app drawer. I couldn't find the app drawer anywhere.

That's most of the differences I've seen from my everyday use so far. Over the weekend, I was driving in some rural areas
(Sydney to Brisbane) , and seemed to receive 4G in some parts, but not sure exactly which frequencies are available…

Is there a way for me to check Band 28?

Let me know what else you'd like to know

        • @piejustice:

          Thanks for your update.
I am facing the push notifications issue as well on the CN version.
You reckon moving to global version has fixed the push notifications issue for you?
That is what I may need to do then.

          Regards,
          J

        • @jacharya:

Using LTE discovery, phone just switched from Band 40 to Band 28 briefly according to my LTE log. So can confirm Band 28.

In terms of push notifications, yes, switching to the global version seemed to fix everything for me. I'm not sure why the CN version seems to kill everything in the background (apps, games etc.).

        • @piejustice:

Is your device still google play certified?

        • @tlai:
google play store settings says uncertified (currently on global version).

        • @piejustice:

In regards to the notifications, I wonder if background activity was turned on. @jacharya maybe give this a try.

        • @tlai:

          tried a few things
          - turned on background activity
          - I think there's an option through the battery settings (optimization?) - turned that off per app - still no good

I have now upgraded to android P WW version…. liked the android one interface better….
Should I now downgrade to android one WW? ummm

[@piejustice] are you on Android P or android one?

        • @piejustice:

Hmmm, people have reported this happening when changing to global on xda. Seems like some people have an unlocked bootloader and or rooted it? But it's not possible now??

        • @tlai:
Also No 'Tap to wake up' in android P :(
          but atleast the notifications work…..

        • @jacharya:

The Whatsapp issue may be Oreo related, google shows up with many notification issues..

        • @jacharya:

Did you guys need to find a seller on taobao to flash your phone? Sorry I'm a noobie, the instructions are confusing.

        • @kamiccolo22:
I used hikari_calyx unlocking services and a number of their guides to get mine fully certified and safety net passed. My device is now a global variant and received OTAs etc. It was pretty easy too I used his patched Magisk boot images to attain root to get the device info file which I hex edited to change the CN to WW (worldwide), reflashed Oreo ROM through OST LA, relocked bootloader and critical lock too and presto fully global Nokia 7 Plus.

        • @AusNugz: Any chance you can provide some detailed instructions for this? hikari_calyx seem to have removed his unlocking service (or I can't find it). Otherwise I did find another unlocking service from techmesto which cost USD5.

Was this where you got the patched Magisk boot image to attain root?

Can you also share instructions on how to get Oreo ROM through OST LA?

Finally, I'm guessing this was where you followed instructions for the rest?

  • +2

Seriously good price. I'm tempted even though I don't need it.

  • Damn. Good looking phone too. I would buy it

  • Thanks! Great price ! Bought.

  • Google Play is No??

  • Great price for what you get.

  • it’s my next phone so i can put v20 in spare phones draw ….issue if i buy grey or try and get good price local and if i go grey get get global already or reflash myself …..

the v20 is great phone but in tired of waiting for lg for oreo and with android one on nokia i’m unschackled from hardware manufacturer time lines vs googles time lines …. this phone is also on the android treble and android P beta list so is ready to go for those wanting android P.

has everything the xiaomi A1 lacks eg band 28, nfc, treble support, except price ….

  • Is this the China or World version?

  • +1

I am currently in the market for new phone, have been eyeing at Nokia for awhile now. Couldn’t decide This or Nokia 8 from last year? The price is almost identical. Anyone used both?

  • getting buyers remorse. Needed a phone and jumped on the Sharp Aquos S2. Should have waited for this! What's the main differences guys? Is this much better?

    • The main difference will probably, better software support and better battery for 2x as much.

      • +1

And significantly better SoC and a Headphone jack!
Main downside for me is that it's physically pretty big.

Wish they could have cut down the top and bottom bezels to get the size back to the same as my (limping) Redmi Note 3 Pro.

  • This is a lot of phone for the money and the build quality of a Nokia too. Would have jumped on to this if I need one.

  • I would buy it if it did not have GST problem ( I might have to pay GST due to 30 days ship .

  • I guess one would hope the phone just works fine for a few years without AU warranty given the lower price ?

    • +1

      Pretty much.

  • Great phone. Am in the market for something similar as gift, but am not sure whether the ROM is okay as is, or would require flashing.

    • +6

Should be fine, unless you're paranoid about the Chinese Government spying on you.
In which case you might want to flash it to the Global so the US Government can spy on you.

      • +3

        Thanks :)
Half my house is Xiaomi, the other half is Google - collectively they know more about me than I do.

  • Nokia is really coming back with better phones… They should have jumped onto Andriod years ago

  • Received the 6gb ram version today.
    Ordered during last deal.
Installed goolge play from browser and all good thereafter.

    • Not sure how many updates you get with the CN version.

      • Not rhetorical but why do I need to keep updating my firmware?

        • So you get current updates and patches

        • Lets Google remove features such as the ability to draw a over the notification area (breaking the app "twilight" in Android 8.0+ so that Google could differentiate the pixel 2) and allows Google to add new surveillance features when they're invented.

(I'm prepared for the negs, bring it on!)

    • Does it come with a clear case?

  • The new Nokia phones are real nice. They seem to be one of the best in terms of providing fast Android updates. Plus all new Noka's have B28 & super long standby time (20-30days according to specs).

  • Any idea when the new Snapdragon 710/730 CPUs are out for nokia? That's the only thing holding me back, they seem to be a lot more power efficient

  • Read the new comments on xda, seems like when you flash to global from CN, google play becomes uncertified and you wont get ota updates? It may be better to keep in on CN version, but not sure how current it's updates are if they are OTA?

    • Not sure if that is true because some are reporting that it's fine and others not so much, willing to take a punt on it for now. Excited to try Android P anyway.

  • +1

I found Joybuy.com's customer service is really terrible. If you have any problem with your purchase, you are on your own. Just bear that in mind.

    • I was just about to pull the trigger. Thanks for letting us know.

  • I would love to get the 6gb version of this phone, but reading the xda post it seems like some people are having issues after flashing from CN to WW such as:

    • losing baseband
    • losing imei
    • mic and/or ear piece not working
    • whatsapp notification issues
    • app store being uncertified losing ability to ota update?

Can anyone who had the CN version upgraded to WW confirm angy of the above?
