  • Must resist buying. Those M.2 slots are what I really need in a NAS.

    • Curious what would be main benefit? I am not seeing a usecase for it personally as its mostly to store data and stream videos…

      • +2

        Databases and VMs.

        • Ah right, makes sense. Didn't think about those.

      • also Synology has a great operating system
I use their surveillance package to store and organise my security footage as well.

  • +3

I purchased one myself before posting… been resisting months, at that price I had to pull the trigger.

    • +1

I bought one during the previous deal.

I actually added 16GB (2x8GB) and it works with out any issues. Running 2 huge VMs (300gb each) and 5 docker containers (home assistant related).

  • I've been pondering these for a while to replace my 6-year old QNAP, great price.

  • Great price and find.

  • I wish I could spare some $ for this. In the meanwhile, my (OMV/PcDuino3Nano/2 USB HDDs) is still going very strong & stable for more than a year.

  • So tempting! Currently have a DS415+ setup.

Anyone have experience or advice on transferring to a new NAS?

Can I simply swap the HDD over? Recommendations?

    • +1

Yep, that is how it works, straight forward. Here is synology article with full steps.

      https://www.synology.com/en-global/knowledgebase/DSM/tutoria…

      • Thanks! A lot of steps, but seems 'relatively' easy (until something goes wrong)!.

        • That covers the various scenarios but its really backup up config, moving HDDs, reinstalling DSM, restoring config. Thats it really.

        • @Anubis:

The restoring Config is only if it's required, ie, somehow gets lost in the move. I moved form a DS413 to a DS916+ and it wasn't required.
It was super simple, pain free. Make sure DSM is up to date, do the backups, remove the drives, and number them if they aren't already (I have it written in texta on the drive), insert drives in new NAS in the correct order. Turn on, find it, reinstall DSM, and I was good to go really quickly.

  • Great price, I paid $785. Had no problems with it so far, easy to set up

  • finally pulled the trigger to replace my 4 yr old HP n54L and xpenology set up. I will be so poor this month but at least I don't have to spend the whole weekend tweaking BIOS and loader.

    Thanks op!

  • Worth upgrading a Microserver (running Synology) to this?

    • which microserver?

      • which

      • I think it’s the 40L

        • +2

My HP N40L was terrible at running plex and had issues with mass transferring of files.
My Synology 918+ works flawlessly. Read that it can support 2x 4K transcoding; although I haven't personally tested this though. It's fairly robust against noobs like me too.

  • +1

HP n54L and xpenology. 5th year running and hasn't slowed down. Next time an i5 processor, 3 yr warranty motherboard with 8GB RAM + Xpenology.

    • N54L ftw. I'm a very happy owner also, decked out with 6x 4TB and 1 drive redundancy.

I'm almost out of space though - which server would you recommend for your 'next time' purchase?

      • HP's current server line is ML (ML10 etc). But the reviews are not that great. I have decided to buy a PC and build xpenology when i retire my N54L, probably next year as NBN will be maturing a bit and I will have access to more 4k content.

      • I'm almost out of space though - which server would you recommend …?

Why not just upgrade the disks?

    • Are you still running DSM 5.2? I didn't bother with the Jun loader for DSM 6 (after a few unsuccessful attempts), and saw the news about DSM 6.2 update bricking the box. Plus I am sick of hacking around for a proper synology account for the cloud services. $680 seems like a reasonable price (though I will have to buy another 4gb RAM).

      • +1

Buying is always the easy, best way if you don't (enjoy or) have time to tinker. But you have to buy a decent version like DS918+ (proper desktop processor & upgradable ram). this should be good for next 4 years. I am using the latest Jun's mode 1.0b & DSM 6.1 (up to date) with web server, more than 15000 photos & videos (directly backed up from 4 mobile phones), old work stuff & hobby stuff stored on it. if you have interl processor, you may be able to run latest synology on it. http://103.214.71.108/homeserver/2018-06-18_122733.png

        • You are actually behind. 6.2 is the latest version but Jun's loader can't handle it at the moment. It will brick device if you upgrade.

Def agree that buying is much easier and stress free. Don't have to worry and read about updates before doing anything.

        • @Anubis: True, I meant my 6.1 install is up to date. 6.2 is too new for xpenology.

        • +1

agree with the "tinkering as a hobby" thing, that's what got me into freenas, and subsequently xpenology. I guess I have shifted my focus to docker side of things instead of DSM specific stuff. Docker is actually one of the (self-justification purchase) reasons for the 918+. I've been running a couple of containers (radarr/sonarr etc) and plex on my n54l with 8gb ram, and it was a struggle. With the 918+ I was hoping to containerize most of the community packages, and spend more time playing with docker swarm or kubernetes.

        • @Anubis: "Jun was able to find a way to install DSM 6 on non Synology boxes." for those like me who didn't know what Juns was.

    • Before I got a QNAP TS-670 Pro, I was rolling an N54 w/P410 controller and 8GB RAM. Used 4x2TB drives and Windows Server 2012 R2.

It sucked at transcoding w/Plex, but it was great for mass storage for my other devices in the house.

I did nightly backups via a USB HDD dock, and semi-monhtly backups to LTO4 tape (using an internal SCSI card).

I'm thinking, do I get rid of the N54L or just keep it around for fun?

  • This may be a stupid question, am I able to install games on the NAS and play it as per normal on my pc? Also is it worthwhile to shuck my desktop external HDDs or better off buying the WD Red deal?

    • +1

RED are the way to go. green and blue drives didnt last long in my NAS.

      • The 8TB drives are very loud in my HTPC.

    • +1

Likely you can store the games on the NAS but the grunt will still come from your PC. NAS Drives are more designed to cope with the 24/7 useage that NAS Boxes use as I understand it. I've got anther ReadyNas box & it uses Red, I've had one drive fail in 4 years & it was replaced for free.

      • Yeah that's fine, I was just wondering to save space as some AAA titles nowadays reach 50GB+ installed.

    • +2

It should be possible but you will probably need to get into the command line to create some links across.

As an example, here is the command to trick itunes to read/write backups to a network drive

      mklink /D "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "X:\Backup"

      • Glad to know it is possible, will look into this! definitely an expensive jump from external HDDs but have been collecting too many and forgot which one stores what.

      • Do you just enter that directly into cmd?
How do you delete the link after its been created?
        Cheers for the advice.

  • +1

Pondered too long, now out of stock

  • +2

Spewing, paid $30 more last week.

  • +1

Does anyone know of any other deals on this unit anywhere at the moment?

    • +1

Yes, $714.67 (see link below). I was going to buy it from here until I noticed CA had it listed for cheaper.

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Synology-DiskStation-DS918-4-Bay…

    • Amazon AU have 10% cashback for most purchases made with a nab credit card (if you have one).

If applicable, that brings it from $759 (Amazon AU price) to just over $680.

  • What about DS718+ (2 slot version) for $594.15? Is this a good price?

Want to upgrade my ~8 year old Qnap TS-119+ (which is still going strong, but can't run Plex server on it).

    • That's a lot of money for a 2 drive version. I'd have to say no. Spend the extra for four drives unless you're totally sure you won't want more than 2 drives in the next 8 years when you're running plex..

    • Redundant volume size is much better with 4 drives.
2 drives only returns 50% of total capacity.

      • I don't run RAID on my QNAP TS-251, I keep a sync'd copy on a different PC… don't like having all eggs in 1 basket.

  • Damn! I've been waiting on another deal for this since I missed out on that super conference deal earlier in the year. Guess I'll just have to keep waiting😥
    Thanks for the post anyway.

  • Good news, people. It's back in stock, at least for now.

  • and no more in stock

  • +12

Few people have been asking so thought it would be helpful to post here —

We are working on another large deal of Synology gear including the 918+. Likely, but not certain, we will have more up by the end of the week, including some models not currently listed

    ..Adam

    • Excited. Keen to see a deal on the expansion unit DX517!
      Cheers Adam!

  • It is back in stock. I just bought one. thanks OP.

  • +5

Good number back in stock. Our purchasing guys wanted to increase the price (losing money on them at the coupon price) but i have asked them to hold off for now. We may increase it at any time so fair warning.
