Synology DiskStation DS115j 1-Bay NAS $99.00 (Free Pickup in VIC or add $11.99 for shipping) @ DeviceDeal

60

I've been looking for a basic second NAS to go with my Synology DS216play and I came across this in my mailbox.

I thought this was a good deal, especially for those in Victoria who can go for the free pick up option. I was not able to find this any cheaper on Staticice or any of the recent eBay sales.

More details on the product in the link and here at the official website:

Plenty of reviews on Google but for those who are lazy like myself:

Enjoy. :)

    • Done. Thanks.

      I knew I was missing something…

Not bad if a single bay NAS is all that is required. Just a pity it only has USB2 and no USB3 ports. Makes backing up to USB slow for offsite backups (for those that need). Having said that its a decent price for a basic NAS but always prefer min of dual bay for redundancy (unless this is purely as a secondary location).

Yep the lack of USB 3.0 is a shame since I plan on doing offsite backups with this. But the way I plan on backing up the server it will just be a very slow initial backup run. I can live with that. :)

My other options with USB 3.0 were the DS216J or the DS115. Both over $200. QNAPs with USB 3.0 also similarly priced.

    1-Bay NAS

At least 2 bays are desired. For 1 bay NAS, just get a 2TB portable HDD for the same price and use as secondary location backup.

    • For a 2-bay NAS, do the same. The mirror won't help in the event of power surge, fire, theft, user error, etc.

  • Will this work for a basic back up of multiple PCs on a network to save files and create/schedule auto back ups once a week?

    • No reason it wouldn't but keep in mind it is very entry level so one wouldn't want multiple PCs all backing up at the same time.
Also remember, one should always have an offsite copy of NAS somewhere eg on a USB drive. You dont want to lose PC data and also NAS backup should there be a fire or the likes. If budget permits, look for a dual bay NAS to cover single HDD failure (which will occure at some point).

      • Yeah, Google Drive is being set up as well for off site.
I will check out the dual bay devices. Thanks

  • This is old hardware (I had one in 2010) but great unit and Synology software support is amazing.

Also remember many backup drives will not be capable of transferring much faster than a saturated USB2 bus anyhow.

This would have many great uses, media server, off-peak torrent downloader or homebridge server.

  • I bought one from devicedeal a few years ago and it is still going strong. Not fast in cpu, but surprisingly fast in backing up once runninh. I uploaded 100's of GB of data when transferring data from up my phone and it backed it up in a few minutes. Initial backup of large folders can take a while.

  • Store is in Ringwood if anyone else is looking for that information…

  • now $149 :(
