Brother MFC-J5730DW $179 ($70 Cashback) A3 Print, MFC-J6930DW $209 @ Centre Com / $199 @ Umart ($100 Cashback) A3 Scan/Print

120

My HP laser printer 2430dtn is no longer picking up paper and it's not worth refurbishing for ~$200.

A few years ago I would have stayed clear of inkjets but after I read about HP PageWide using 80% less energy than laser whilst printing faster, I did some more research and I found the printer manufacturers to be quite competitive and using pigment ink instead of dye ink and I was surprised about the progress that is filtering down and that companies are replacing their lasers with PageWide technology.

The wife asked for an A3 printer to share with me for both business and personal use (with a price less than $1500) and my requirements being duplex scanning and printing, I narrowed it down to the Epson WF-7725 and the Brother MFC-J6930DW, laser printers being completely out of range for A3 size. The ability for inkjets to print colour prints for the kids appeared to be a bonus. The MFC-J6930DW does A3 scanning and the MFC-J5730DW does A4 scanning (I bought after a few hours research but I probably would have bought the MFC-J5730DW since the MFC-J6930DW is huge).

I took my MFC-J6930DW home yesterday and printed some photos for the kids and was blown away with the quality of the prints compared to Kmart. The inks may be expensive over time (but my research found that the price has come down for this too) - black ~3000 pages is ~$65 and colour more expensive but not over the top - the issue with inkjet being they recommend you print often to keep the ink flowing and use cartridges within 6 months, but the entry cost is so low compared to laser I suppose it ends up cheaper for lower volumes. I purposely put some water on a black page and there was a little smudging but a lot less than what I saw 10 years ago, the thing about inkjet I'm not happy about coming from laser is the quality of the text isn't as perfect, but overall it's cheap and works.

The difference between the Epson and the Brother is that the Epson heads are fixed on the printer whilst the Brother are in the cartridges (so the Brother is probably better for more adhoc usage). Note that you can probably get Harvey Norman to match CPL or other stores for $290 less $100 cashback so they will come to the same price if you are an Epson fan.

Anyway down to the dollars - note that you can get this printer anywhere local to you to avoid expensive postage, but I found my local store Centre Com to be most convenient to me. Warning: they are both quite heavy and bulky machines and I couldn't fit mine in my WRX with booster seats in so I had to walk the trolley down the road since I live close to the shop, but they would fit in an SUV or larger car.

  • i wouldnt mind going inkjet but sometimes i go 2-3 months without printing then do a whole print session - what is the recommended care for non consistent use and avoiding ink dry out?

    • I do that with my inkjet, just buy the normal cartridges (not the extra capacity ones) and don't buy a replacement until you're actually running out. I've used my ink cartridge for a full year without any apparent loss in quality or performance so it should be fine. Might also depend on room temperature levels.

    • Plug the inkjet in from time to time to do an automatic duty cycle, especially in summer.

I was surprised by the colour fast when wet.

We also have a brother duplex a4 printer with toner.

Inkjets are possibly not fo you then.

Unless you really need colour get a laser printer. I print a dozen pages a YEAR total on a couple of occasions and my Brother Laser is 10 years old on the first cartridge. No problems.

An inkjet will dry out and clog in that usage. Printing a page every now and then to stop clogging wastes lots of ink.

Colour lasers are very expensive on toner, you need many cartridges.

Consider buying a laser and getting infrequent colour printing done at Officeworks. Otherwise be prepared for frequent cartilage changing despite low usage.

Yes but printer supermarket doesn't do pickup so get it local if you can postage is expensive unless you don't want to carry it

  • look for a color laser printer.
    any recommendation?

Check out the Brother lasers in the cashback to start with since they are sold in computer shops

If you don't need A3, HP PageWide (eg. 577) is the new best thing it appears

  • Single pass duplex?

    • +1

I've tested it - using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), it takes just one pass of the paper to get both sides

      It's not bad at all

      • Is that for both models?

        • Yes I checked the 5730 website and it’s supported

  • I know this is ink not laser but Brother really have slid down hill in the laser department over the years. I still run my old HL4150cdn from 2013, its 6000 page generic toners all colours for <$16ea lasts a long time, the new ones are all lower capacity and cost more. I'll get another old Brother from that era (sharing parts) before I ever buy new and if I do it'll be time to switch brands. New models haven't brought in much that mine can't do. Same print speeds, gimmicky touch screens, perhaps the only thing they've improved is quality which was the only weakness of the older brothers (colours heavy on toner) but that was tweakable. From a purely price point (being OzBargain and all) I haven't found anything that comes close.

I'll go to bed now :)

  • How would this be for printing on brown Kraft style paper? I'm looking for a laser to do this, but being able to print in A3 would be nice. Worried that color ink on brown paper won't show up as well as toner would.

  • I print at officeworks.

    • I print A0/A1 at officeworks too but there's often a delay or queue and it's out of the way for me but may be on the way to your travels and convenient for you

  • The MFC-J6930DW is $299 at Umart: https://www.umart.com.au/Brother-MFC-J6930DW-Printer_38120G.… which makes it $10 cheaper.
Looks like Officeworks is not part of the deal so can't use their price match.

  • Check ink costs before you buy - brother inkjets used to accept $2 generic cartridges but the cartridge design has become more complicated, possibly chipped.
