Bunnings not honouring the find it cheaper and beat it by 10%....

Hi guys, this one I thought i'd let the community bounce around.

We're doing a renovation on our kitchen (NSW) and have been shopping around. We found a double sink we liked and this is what shopping around showed us:

Bunnings RRP $898
Second cheapest price (normal retailer) $735.20
Ebay store with free shipping, 619 reviews 99.5% positive. $599

So of course i told my wife we'd get bunnings to beat it by 10% as all their advertising says, and she went down there today. It's listed as a special order-in item at Bunnings so you can't just pick it up off the shelf.

Because the price difference was so large, the manager in the store had to ring the support team, who said it was managers discretion. Manager said they don't normally see such a large price difference and they reserve the right to not sell something at under cost, which is difficult to swallow as how do you know what their cost is…?

As the title suggests, they didn't beat it, but they did match it and my wife bought it on the spot. Happy with the price as i'd rather deal with bunnings with any return or fault problems.

Anyway, local bunnings got the sale, but i'm personally a bit disappointed they didn't beat the price, thoughts…?

  • What’s the product number?

  • Put it through accc.

    • They only deal against corporations not individuals

      • -1

Bunnings is a corporation last time I looked.

        • Think mbck is referring to the OP for making false claims ( wife is never wrong)

        • +1

@Peanut money: Reporting you to the ACCC

  • +1

Pretty sure the ACCC would have something to say about that, I think Harvey Norman got in trouble for a similar type of thing a while ago

    • +4

Would be ok if it was a stocked item as Bunning's policy states but this a a Special Order item, i.e., not an item normally stocked by Bunnings

Time to go to eBay and wait for another sitewide sale.

  • +2

Which one didn't they price beat? I kind of understand the eBay one (unsure if official seller?) but a normal retailer I assume they would. I have heard things of Bunnings doing shady stuff like getting companies to change the product number and stuff by one value so that its 'technically' different and they don't have to price beat.

To be honest though I assume they probably have some clause somewhere about it which makes it difficult to argue officially, but can still put a complaint in I guess, might force them to be more transparent in the future?

    • They price matched ebay. Ultimately we got a sharp price on a good sink, we're just disappointed bunnings played the "this is looks like a dodgy seller card" to avoid the price beat.

I honestly wouldn't expect B&M shops to match, much less beat, eBay "shops". Be lucky they matched it.

  • +22

They didn’t really need to match either since their policy states ‘stocked item’ and it’s special order (not a stocked item)

  • Yep, calm down folks..what dom said

Pretty sure stocked refers to the competitor having it in stock, not bunnings. I'm reading the following straight from the bunnings website:

Bunnings' price guarantee applies to any lower price on an item that is currently stocked and available from an online store, or in a physical store in Australia. It applies where the other retailer’s final price, inclusive of delivery, taxes, fees and charges, is lower than our price on the day that the price guarantee is requested.

You can always try but I reckon you're drawing a long bow as their advertising statement is 'Where you'll find a competitor's lower price on the same stocked item, WE'LL BEAT IT BY 10%', against any inflections you may suggest exist elsewhere. I suggest that you, like I, have encountered a Bunnings manager that has gone above and beyond what he/she has needed to do for a customer.

        • I agree that it was down to the manager, but the funny thing is that neither the floor staff, the manager, nor the internal helpline they called to get advice on our request ever raised the fact they had to order it in as any sort of exclusion to the policy.

Yeah, I know, it seems a lot of the time that the staff aren't trained on the policies, especially ones that are important to the consumer (to me, price matches and price beats are up there as the most important, especially as every year we seem to have less real 'high street' competition), and now that both of my daughters (year 12 and 10) have part time jobs in retail I hear the stories about stuff that customers ask that they haven't been briefed on.
looking at the sink you did well, I just wish there was a way to see prices for similar Oliveri products….we drove our builder mad years ago, and black wasn't an option then!

Yea i had a similar sitution with a mop, it was priced cheaper at officeworks and the check out said they can't do it due to OW being a sister shop. i asked to see the manager about it, and first thing he said was they dont price beat clearance (even though no one or no where did it say clearance).

They try to get out of price beating whenever they can it seems. Not surprised since the only competition, Masters has left, they can do what they want, basically a monopoly.

I find bunnings refusing more and more item lately.
They would not match weed killer because their product code had an extra 0 in the product code. Everything on the product was the same down to the ingredients.

They won't match bunnings products from another store

Also if your shipping is free from another company over $50 and the product is $40 at bunnings you can't buy 2 if and they price match it cos shipping isn't free

  • +5

Yeah i don't understand why they would match an ebay listing, anyone could just make a fake listing… actually that gives me an idea

    • +1

Reminds me of how a large chain store in the US price matched some ridiculously price ps4 off Amazon.

      • If it's an official Amazon listing, and not a 3rd-party seller on Amazon, that makes sense.

this should almost be written the other way round, "bunnings price matched ebay on item they didn't even have to price match"

I don't think anyone here would expect you to come out on top trying to price match ebay from the get go but, especially if you can't demonstrate the product numbers exactly match and that doesn't even touch on the special order item

i'd be happy that you got to spend ebay dollars but have a real store warranty (for what its worth)

  • I have had the same problem with them,I purchased an item both which was made in the same factory which had the same stores name on and bunnings had their own brand name on theirs,so although both were identical units they would not include the %10 as they were not completely identical as they both had different generic stores names on their stickers,

Its not a stock item hence doesnt come under Bunnings price beat policy. FULL STOP.
I think its fairly straight forward.
Like the person said, they are under no obligation to sell anything to you.

Alternatively find a Bunnings store that does stock the item you want.
But there are conditions attached as well.
So like they said, they are under no obligation to sell below cost—-would you??? Of course not.

So stop complaining and go for the best price.

  • Yawn, yep whats new.

  • Does any one able to find a complete written Bunnings policy on price match? Can power pass discount go on top of the price match discount?

  • Powerpass discount does not apply to items where price has already been reduced

    • Not always the case. I could not find Bunnings written policy but it seems who you are dealing with.
