$4k Root Canal ?

Hi,

My wife had a tooth ache so we got it checked ($50) and were told that since it requires one more xray ($50) she'd have to make another visit.

However, based on the current visit she was provided an "Initial Estimate" of $4000+ for root canal.

Compared to the country we're from, its an absolutely horrific figure! So just thought i'd ask the ozbargain community how they save on dental issues. Is 4k a realistic amount for a root canal?

I'm based in East Melbourne.

Thanks!

  • My cousin is a dentist and I paid him $50 for the RTC :D

  • me mate went back to Nepal and get it done for 200. Bloody cheap!

  • For the people suggesting having the procedure done overseas, how much are you really saving?

Plane ticket to Thailand - $600
    4 nights accommodation - $800
Food, Taxis, everything else - $200
    Dentist - $200

And if the Mrs and kids wants to tag along, you're probably up at 4k. Sure there's some value in the 'holiday', but I doubt the person getting the procedure is having a good time on this trip.

Taking sick leave for this type of procedure would be another grey area. Easy for some, extremely difficult for others.

Shop around locally, you'll find a dentist who'll do it for less. Look for a dentist from your home country (facebook, local papers, etc), who's licensed to work in Australia. Normally they're happy to do a favour for their fellow countrymen.

  • I reckon more than half my teeth have root canals. I pay whatever it is that HCF pays them. I am zero out of pocket.

  • Get a new PHI policy with waived 2,4 and 6 week waiting periods. Go get the teeth checked with another dentist and claim 60% or more back from the cost of the root canal. But most policies have a limit for complex dental. But still, better than paying full price.

    • most policies have a limit for complex dental

They also have exclusions for pre-existing conditions, regardless of the waiting period.

You'd probably need to wait several weeks after taking out the new policy.

  • thats including the crown

  • I had a root canal a couple of years ago and was quoted $2500 and $2600 from two endodontists in Brisbane. I ended up going with my regular very experienced dentist of 30+ years, and he only charged me $1600 all up including the crown.

$699 crown here. Not sure about root canal.

Got my root canal done at
Cranbourne Dentist, 69 High Street, Cranbourne VIC 3977

Can't remember how much but less than $1000.

  • I was expecting a lot more "you sure got rooted!" posts.

  • That is way too much for a root canal. You can have an Implant for under $3000 so I think you are being hustled! Get some more quotes!

  • Sounds like they're putting a crown on top as well, otherwise $4k is extreme and I'd be seeing a new dentist

  • I got mine done in Bulgaria, Glad I just happened to be there when I needed it done. Only cost like $150 from memory and its still good almost 5 years later! highly recommend. haha

I paid about 4k on a molar but that included the cost of the crown over the tooth. The root canal procedure alone should cost around 2k give or take depending on where you go.

If you go to an endodontist, they will charge twice as much.

  • I had root canals and apicectomy on my two front upper teeth in 1984, and have had three sets of crowns since then on the same teeth. No problems with infections ever since. BTW the clinicians who had treated me were senior dental students at a prestigious dental school in the Philippines.
Forward to 2018 - I will be needing a root canal on one of my canines, and here in Sydney I was quoted $900 plus $400 for bleaching.
