DWI Warranty Help

Hi,

I purchased a Google Pixel from the DWI website and was wondering if I could get some advice. 3 months ago I received my device in the mail and this is the first red flag. The seal sticker was cut open which suggests the phone has been used/refurbished. Now the main issue is that the phone did not turn on (DOA); It was just a black screen with no response or anything. I tried googling it, going into fastboot mode, holding down power buttons, trying a different charger, but it was absolute darkness. I emailed them in regards to this stating the phone was DOA a few hours after I received the device. While waiting for them to respond, I left it charging for two weeks (yes, two weeks!) and miraculously, the phone worked like a brand new phone and was running just fine.

Two weeks later, the phone just stopped working again. The screen was completely black like it was initially and I contacted DWI and sent the device back for inspection. I received an email yesterday the phone has "water damage" as seen in this picture and they are unable to replace it. How does water even get there? The phone would have to be completely submerged in order for this to happen. It has 110% never been in water, or close to water. Now, I have to pay the shipping to get the phone back!

Firstly, DWI should be covered by ACCC given that they have an ABN. Furthermore, I initially contacted them in regards to the DOA which should be enough proof to suggest the phone I received initially was faulty.

I am not sure what to do! I have just wasted a hundred dollars on a dead phone that is in Hong Kong, which I need to pay to get shipped back. Lesson learnt, spend a few extra $$$ to get Australian stock.

Thank you!

Tl;dr phone is supposedly 'water damaged' and they are not covering it under warranty.

They may have an ABN but if they are not based in Australia how can ACCC enforce consumer law on them?

    • That is a good point. So does that mean ACCC would be powerless?

      • The accc doesn’t deal with individual disputes like this. Op has to contact Nsw fair trading.

        • But if DWI is not based in Australian, I feel like NSW Fair Trading would be useless as well.

  • Do you have a dehumidifier? Moisture can build up and ruin the device.

    • No, but I do not believe that is necessary. I've had my past phone for 4 years and this phone was dead from the get-go.

That's the risk you take to save a few bucks.

    • A few hundred bucks actually

      • That's what happen when you overtake others on a single lane.

  • I emailed them in regards to this stating the phone was DOA a few hours after I received the device.

The item can’t be doa after a few hours.

    • The email was done a few hours after I received the device as I was trying to fix it. The phone never turned on at all

Credit card charge back. Nothing else works with these monkeys.

    (From personal experience)

    Don't dwi.

I too had a bad experience with them. You can't phone them. They don't respond to the toothless tiger of consumer affairs. They are the judge, jury and executioner of all warranty assessments (what could go wrong). Avoid this company at all costs.

      • Oh yeah. Even their shipping insurance is useless. I think they are their own shipping insurance

Mobile phones have a moisture sensor built in. Whilst it can indicate when a phone has been in contact with water it can also react to the slightest sign of moisture like being in a damp bathroom or similar situations that normally have no physical affect on the device.
The damage shown in your pic.. is that from your phone or just a sample pic?
Shady dealers often use this sensor as an easy means to escape warranty liabilty. I have seen it mentioned very often in forums.
I just read on the productreview site where others have had the same run around or fob off that you have had. One even mentioned that they are not an authorised dealer for the products they sell and only self guarantee what they sell.
They could buy their stock without manufacturers warranty which would give them a pricing edge?
Down the bottom of the PR site page there was this comment from someone with a similar problem.. Are they onselling faulty products? Your box seal was broken .. right?
"My tablet has stopped working, will not turn on or charge please tell me what to do? Thank you name removed customer No.xxxxxx"

As already mentioned, contact your CC issuer and see if they will do a charge back or try contacting the phone manufacturer direct. As it was purchased overseas you may find no help from your states consumer authority.
That is the risk you take to make a saving.
Failing all else you could try a factory reset of the phone or even getting a local phone tech to look at it for you if you get it back?
It may be something simple like a faulty battery or the on off micro switch being misaligned with the case button?
    Good luck.

    • The picture is my phone sent from DWI "technicians". I will definitely try the things you mentioned, thank you for the insight :)

  • Slightly related, but are eglobalcentral-au the same company as DWI(operating under different names)? I've found a number of forum references saying this is the case.
