Travel Competitions for a Bigger than Usual Family

Hi everyone,

I've been the on-and-off OzBargainer for a few years now, but this is my first question for the community.
OK, here goes.

We have five kids (and yes, we've got a TV).
This fact rules us out of the most travel competitions because only two, maximum three, kids can be included usually.
Do you think it's possible to pay some money and go with the whole family (leaving aside a discussion about the possibility of winning a competition for a moment)? Or will it be too hard to coordinate the tickets and hotels, etc.?

Thanks.

Camping … no more problems that need solving. I have found camping is within reach of most people.

You mean pay the competition prize organizer extra money to basically up-size the prize? Or basically organize a parallel trip for the extra family members?

I doubt the first - unless you offer them an impractical amount of money. The second… sure, no reason why not. You can probably buy separate plane tickets for the same, or a similar flight, and just pay more to upgrade the room at the hotel when you check in.

  • Maybe this sort of deal would help in the future. Then you could go on holidays without trying to win comps.

As for your question…. Sure all you’d have to do is book on the same or similar flights and book the same hotel.

    • Haha. Good suggestion. A bit late though. You can't put this tadpole back in a sack, so to speak.

  • i thought this was going to be about who gets to go and who gets left behind …

  • I was lucky enough to win a trip to Rio for two in 2016. Was unable to pay the way for an additional person.
If you are lucky enough to win you may just have to have one parent go with some children and cross your fingers you win another prize at a later date and take the others.

Pick the two or three kids you like most and leave the others at home.

  • Thanks for your replies everyone.

I wonder why they don't just do a fixed price travel vouchers. It's so much simpler for them as organisers and doesn't limit number of people who can travel so much.

    • Because they have better deals with the actual suppliers (airlines/hotels/tour operators) who provide fixed products/services, than just a dollar amount.
