[AMA] I work full time doing odd-jobs on AirTasker

Hi,
I have been working full-time this year doing odd jobs on AirTasker, mostly IT related.

Started off earning $100-200 a week and now it is my main source of income.

Have completed over 100+ jobs.

  • Do you have issues with customers refusing to release funds due to scope creep / poor communication / 'friendly fraud'?

I've had it happen a couple of times.

It's a bit frustrating as if someone is trying to do that, they are likely to leave you a bad review afterwards.

Generally speaking most people are pretty straight forward, there has been times where I've told them it's out of the scope of work for quoted price and they have then cancelled the task - and there has been times where they have asked for an updated quote and proceeded with it. Also surprisingly a large amount of customer will pay a bonus on top.

  • How does it compare to freelancer and fiverr?

Fiverr I never really had much luck. I think on Airtasker people are more willing to give new people a try compared to Fiverr.

      Freelancer no experience with it.

  • Good on you. I cannot find any jobs vaguely applicable to me on Aistasker

    • A good thing to do is to set up 'alert' keywords that will notify you when something comes up matching it.

For example I have mine set up for: 'google', 'website', etc
That way if a task gets posted with any of those words in the title I get a notification on my phone.

  • You have made me consider trying to earn an income from airtasker. Just a few questions. Do you think your very good at IT and this is why you earn as much as you do? Also assuming this is your only source of income, do you worry how this looks on your resume?

    • I think I am good at general IT - yes.

Not the best out there but a lot of the work is stuff that people could figure out for themselves if they google and have a basic understanding of how it works.

I have lost count of the amount of DNS / Domain setup jobs I have done, normally around $20-25 for 10-15 mins work tops.

  • How do you feel one can earn a decent 'pay'? I'm in accounting and all online related jobs seem a huge 'lowball' to professional environment. So while I'd love to earn some odd jobs expanding my knowledge and trying it out on the weekends the jobs are ridiculous? I don't knwo why people bid their services out so cheap.

Also- for a new timer how do you secure roles without a track record? Do you essentially have to do pro bono work /extremely low ball rates to get a foot in the door?

    • I couldn't really say for the accounting industry.

Securing jobs without a track record is done by working extremely cheap, and making sure that your first clients are taken care of. Go above and beyond so that you get a good review from them. It's sucky but pays off later down the track.

How simple are your web designs really? I've been considering Airtasker as a side thing and have some web design experience, but I'm not sure if it's enough for the average customer.

    • Some of the designs I do are just landing pages for people which I would normally get paid around $50-100 for, I can knock those out in about 30 minutes.

The full websites I build aren't overly complicated, but you definitely need to know what you are doing - especially in terms of making it mobile friendly as that is what most clients are after.
You could always look at designing some sample websites to show off (if you have the time).

  • Interesting thread.

I'm also on AT. I concur with the comments about the race to the bottom. What some people think a job is worth, and what some taskers are willing to accept is a bit of a worry.

I do a mix of odd jobs - flat pack, labouring, flyer delivery, a few odd IT jobs. It's not my primary source of income, as I have a traditional 9-5 type job.

When I put in an offer on a job - I look at my travel time (if any), how long I anticipate it will take, and what I take home after AT. If I'm not making a set minimum per hour, then I won't bother.

I signed up at Airtasker when they first opened in Australia. Mostly photography and some graphic design gigs hoping to get a few extra clients through it. Before applying for a gig I work out my total costings (travel, hours worked there and post production if any) to take it on and see whats left. Already do freelance work on top of work for another company. So doing the maths the numbers show I will be earning no more then $10/hr on the highest end, less then $5 on the average and some would actually cost me more money then I'll make. Maybe only useful for some types of gigs or what am I doing wrong? I've not bothered taking any gigs yet and been reading late that ATO is targeting on these type of work - talk about greed on low income earners.

  • I was lucky enough to score one of those $50vouchers and I am trying to use it for the firsts time today - never used Airtasker before
Anyone know if you have to use the whole value IE I put up a task and somebody made a lower offer My budget was over $50, the voucher value is $50 but they offered $49.
Would this work? A $50 voucher on a $49 price?

    • I can't see why it wouldn't work.

If you're worried just comment on their message and ask them to update their price to $50 and they will.

      • yeah cheers I just added it and it was fine

  • When you pop an ad up on air tasker, how do you know how much to offer? eg. coding error in template

    • You offer what you think it's worth, if you have no idea you can just put '$5' and tell people to quote you in the description.
