Toshiba Dynadock V (Latest Model USB Docking Station) for $97.00 at Officeworks

90

With most shops still selling the old "Dynadock U" at full rrp of $179.00, I couldn't believe my eyes when I walked into the Clarence Street (Sydney) Officeworks today and found the new "Dynadock V" for $137.00.

I picked one up and took it to the counter.

So, I had a genuine "OzBargainGasm" when it scanned at $97.00!!

When I got back to the office I checked Lasoo. Well, there you go, it was a special hidden-away in the current back-to-school catalogue.

Best price I could find online for a Dynadock V was $148.00

(Note: Most of those listings are for the old "U" model, too)

      Re "$83 elsewhere…"

I live near "Hardware Solution Pty Ltd"

      1. There is no shopfront at the address on their website.

      2. Try telephoning the number on their contact us page http://www.hardwaresolution.com.au/info/id/11.html and let me know how you get on. Hint: it dials-out.

Also, try ringing http://www.secureglobal.com.au/contact.html while you're at it. Someone answers the phone there, at least:

      SG: Hello?
      Me: Hello, who is this?
      SG: Who have you called?
Me: I thought I called a computer retailer in Melbourne
      SG: Which retailer?

I hung up at that point.

If you want to supply your credit card details to these companies and chance your luck on an order, please do so and let us all know how you go.

      • I hung up at that point.

        lol… i'll revoke the neg….

at least you can try and get OW to beat the price by 5%…

        • In this case price matching won't work. Office works always call up the supplier if you bring in a print out from shopbot / staticice. They are careful and will ask about the stock level and delivery fees too.

        • @ josephlee80

not always, if the price difference is small, they don't check…

        • Hell, i matched the harmony 600 from at least $70+ down to $33 and they didn't even call, just checked the site.

      • I lol'ed @ which retailer..

      • Have a google maps street view look at the listed address for "secure global" they are called "Oshima Technology" lol (with a big Apple logo on the front of a op shop shopfront).

Also their webstore looks strangely generic to www.allstateit.com.au I wonder where these "templates" come from. Maybe i could open my own dodgy webstore…

for those who wonder what it may be used/ good for
    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xe68fu_toshiba-dynadock-v-u…

    • Is it supported by Toshy laptops only, or can any brand laptop be used?
Being a USB device, I'm expecting it ought to be supported by any laptop!

      • I'll be using it with my Lenovo X201 Tablet (which only has GMA video = incompatible with some video editing packages).

  • Looks like the Dynadock U supports a 1920 x 1200 monitor resolution whereas the Dynadock V only supports 1920 x 1080 - sure it's a minor issue but it could be important for some.

    • +2

you can also use upto three monitors when using it
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0E1voMSlnU

      • Well, sort of - you can plug ONE display into that thing, and plug another display into your laptop. The Toshiba only adds one display to the 2 that you already can have on most laptops.

    • FWIW, I never bought the "U" because it was well-known for a video signal drop problem (see http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft%3A*&…). They finally sorted it out with the V :-)

Plus, the monitor it will be used with (Samsung P2370HD) is only 1920x1080 and I don't have any need for SPDIF audio.

  • Does anyone know more details about this product? Just did some quick searches and couldn't find too much info. How does it work? Does the inbuilt video just help render on the extra display what my lappy's GPU (still the bottle-neck?) renders? Will a mid range lappy (with low end dedicated graphics) be able to handle an extra 1920 x 1080 display through dynadock?

For illustration's sake, what happens when you try to run a graphic intensive game at 1920 x 1080 resolution on the display linked through dynadock?

    • I'm no expert on it (I haven't even unboxed mine yet!), but this is what I learned by researching it before I bought one:

      How does it work:
      1. Plug in power.
      2. Plug in monitor, USB devices, headphones etc to the dock.
      3. Run USB type B plug from dock to a standard USB type A plug into your laptop.
      4. Let Windows auto-magically install the video driver, audio driver, USB hub etc
      5. Use it ;-)

      The in-built video:
It is some sort of NVidia GPU chipset which, while supporting CUDA 3.0, does all the rendering etc itself. For this reason, it's popular with netbook owners as it does not tax the CPU or host laptop's GPU to do all the work.
