Mazda 323 2003 hatchback

Hey guys

I am buying a 2003 automatic Mazda 3 hatchback from my friend. I have driven it myself for over 2 hours so no problem in the car.
Do you guys still feel I should go for a mechanical check?
Also as I am international driving license what type of insurance will you suggest?
The car value is 2k with no dents. Minor scratches and CR running fine.

You should still check it has a service history and maintained. I would get an RACV check on it. So you are aware of any issues or potential issues. Also worth calling up Mazda service department for what its up for in next service for Km on clock. If its that old should already have had all the timing belts done. It may need them dont again as usually every 4 years or 60km for cars generally.

Are you paying 2k or thats what its worth on market.

next thread - "I bought a car off a friend which I had driven for 2 hours and it was fine. now it won't start. help me"

    1) get a mechanical check.

how many KM's has it done?
when were the tires last replaced?

the things to look out for when buying older cars is the maintenance costs that might be upcoming. e.g. timing chain, tyres, CV joints, brake pads, etc.

you need to look at the things (that for a newer car would not have much wear and tear), for an older car could be worn and require replacing.

  • go for a mechanical check - thread closed

  • The car value is 2k

Well it depends on how much the mechanical check is going to set you back.

    • That’s what I think too. $200 on a mechanics check isn’t a wise investment IF (and only if) you have some mechanical knowledge and you can trust your friend to give you a decent history of the vehicle, especially on any doubts they have about anything mechanical.

For a $2k you may find that it isn’t worth repairing for a major issue, be prepared to toss it away if it breaks and get a new one.

  • Mechanical check and ppsr check is absolutely essential.

Most insurance companies are happy to insure international drivers. However if you are here to stay then I’d recommend changing to a Aussie license ASAP as the premiums will be cheaper.

  • Just get the check done. Since its your friend, have you noticed any problems with the car recently? are they upgrading because of a problem?

  • How strong is your relationship with your friend?
If you buy the car and something goes wrong, it's on you not them.
    Get it properly checked out.

  • $2k is a throwaway car , not worth spending 300 for a check

if the check comes back with a quote of 1k to fix , your friend won't sell you at 1k obviously

    so no point

  • Yes m buying for 2k.
Tyres were replaced last year new alloys.
What is timing beltand how to check that? how much did it cost roughly?
he is leaving the country and hence selling it
