Recommend Me an Electric Heater for My Apartment

Hey guys,

So I've never had to purchase an electric heater in my life nor do I want to. But unfortunately I'm at the point when I need to :(

I hear that electric heaters can be expensive to run so thats why I'm seeking the knowledge of the OZ Bargain community to guide me in the right direction of eternal warmth.

I have a small one-bedroom apartment with an open plan kitchen lounge area.

Suggestions?

I note that the GG's have this one on sale at the moment, and the reviews look good:

Many thanks.

Oil filled column heaters are good for heating large areas but take a long time to heat up (up to 2h). This one looks like it has a fan to help circulate the heat. You can get cheaper heaters without the fan but for such a large area, you'll need it.
Convection panel heaters have become all the rage lately. They heat up quicker and look nicer but they start at about $250 and go up to several hundred. They're no more efficient so the only justification I can see for spending so much more would be if you wanted to mount in on the wall.

    • Great info! Thanks mate.

I have one of those, smaller version, for my daughters room. It does the job. However, the door is closed at night and it is a small room. Usually I turn it on about 30 mins before bed to max and 6 then at bed time turn it down to medium/low and 1-2 depending on outside. It keeps the room at about 19C.

    • Thanks for the review mate. Sounds like it will do the job at my place just fine.

Ensure whatever you get has a timer, then you can set it up to turn on just before you usually get home, turn off half an hour or so after you usually go to sleep and start up half an hour before your alarm.

Electric blankets are good investment too if you get cold during the night and they use less energy than a room heater.

Yep that one is fine, we got ours 2nd hand for $60. I saw a few 2nd hand online recently just before it got cold, but they got snapped up quick.

    Only issues:

    • The fan is basically useless, think of a mini hair-dryer attached to the thing.
    • if you are a light sleeper, the sound of it turning on and off could potentially bother you (it is very minimal, sounds like metal cracking. Most oil heaters do this).

It would probably be cheaper to buy some extra blankets/sleeping bags/snuggies?
