First couple days can be hard as your body gets over sugar cravings and starts to adapt to burning body fat.

But after that its great to wake up in the morning and not feel starving hungry.

Personally I found adding in a little carbs (like 30g/day) in the evening meals was easier than doing strict keto (no carbs), and still lost weight, but you may find strict keto is fine for you.

      • 30g/day is fine and I would call that pretty strict keto. It's practically impossible to do no carbs and keep to it. I end up around 20g most days, mainly through a few lattes, and am always amazed if I go out for dinner and not be concerned about carbs, how starving I am the next morning. Also, it's just great not to have to eat so often.

  • I'm all for healthy eating, but have a read of the "Is the keto diet safe?" section here:

I think the science is pointing in favour of it being safe. Certainly safer than the excessive carb diets recommended for decades by many governments, diets which were strongly biased against fat and towards sugar by sugar industry lobbyists. This is not a 'conspiracy' theory but rather demonstrable fact. Much like the tobacco industry the sugar product manufacturer deliberately obfuscated the dangers of their wares and cast the blame on fats for causing obesity, heart disease and so on. See this for an example: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/articl…

    • Its safe. It was developed to combat the strength of seizures by starving the brain of more 'active' fuel.

It does precisely nothing for weight loss if you exceed your TDEE, like any diet.

    • Excess weight causes far bigger issues.

    • 'purchase' the ebook and sync to your kindle (or iphone/android kindle reader)

        I can’t see a purchase option either.
Just some thing about this title being available if you join kindle unlimited.

      • There is no ‘purchase’ button?

        • Worked it out, you have to go through a browser, not the amazon app.

  • I've found 5-2 (or 4-3) fasting (only small amount of mostly protein-based calories on fasting days) to be a good lifestyle choice.

I combine keto with extended intermittent fasting, a la Jason Fung - only thing that has gotten my persistently high insulin levels down and allowed me to lose weight, and get off metformin after being pre-diabetic for nearly 20 years. Happily, I have a supportive GP. Feel better than I have ever felt in my adult life. Expect some of us are just more carbohydrate sensitive than others.

    • that sounds really interesting!

      I'm pre-diabetic at 115kg and insulin resistant.

Love my rice as most Asians do.

Was pretty fit in my teens and early 20s and gas ed weight after marriage and kids.

I'll go through Fitness phases and get fitter, maybe lose 10kg but work/family commitments mean I can't find time to walk/run or surf like I used to in my early 20s.

  • Why is keto always advertised as a weight loss solution? What about for people who need or want to gain weight? My issue is that I've almost always been underweight but also have a genetic predisposition to high blood cholesterol. Short of a low sugar, high carb diet (which makes me feel physically and mentally sluggish), am I screwed?

    • Because 70% of our country is overweight and I doubt 70% have a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol?

Of course they will target the biggest market they can.

  • eating fat gives me a fat
