Best HDD for Synology NAS

Hi all,

What is the best NAS drive especially for Synology?
I am using WD Red but one of them went kaput only after 4 years (is this even normal lifespan for NAS HDD??).

On the other side, can I claim warranty/RMA/ACL on this failed drive? 4 years feels to short for me for a HDD specifically marketed for NAS..

Thanks

  • Is the NAS on 24/7?
How often is data written to it?

My WD Red is still going strong after 6 years. With it on 24/7 and data being written and erased to it constantly.

    There you go:

  • normal lifespan for a nas red is 3 years, so you did well with 4.

  • WD Red

    Nope

    Give or take…

  • I had a 6TB WD Red go kaput after 6 months of light usage. Don't trust these drives anymore. Sticking to Toshiba X300.

I'm sort of in the same boat. Looking at either building or buying another nas.

Looking at the HDD's and my experience with them, I found out that it is mostly based on luck.

I've had WD's red fail after 2 years and Seagate still going strong 2 years after error reports with HDD imminent fail warning.

Haven't tried Toshiba yet, but I'll look into it.

Have you thought at HGST? That's my next go to HDD.

    • Now part of WD, I wonder if they are still made by Hitachi or once current stocks are gone will be a WD internals?

      • I wonder the same too.. I want to avoid WD if I can this time around.

    • Yes im thinking about HGST after looking at the Backblaze report. Toshiba seems to fare quite well too.

  • Also, have a look at the Backblaze HDD report

4 years is pretty good, I reckon. All HDDs die, a sample size of one is hardly anything to be concerned about.

  • Find the cheapest drive you can get with the longest warranty.

Do not trust anyone who tell you to get this brand or that brand, most people does not have access to large sample size and go with past experience. It's simply impossible to tell future reliability level from the past.

Having said that, I find that desktop grade drives have longer lifespan and cheaper price than enterprise or NAS grade drives.

  • I went with a pair of HGST drives for my Synology NAS.

I've been running 4x WD Red's in my Synology NAS for 5 years, no failures. 4 years is good; just replace it and move on.

If you're looking for alternatives, HGST have good rep.
