Business shirts do you prefer CT or TM or ...?

So I've recently taken the plunge with online purchases of business shirts
First I'd tried VH
Then CT, and found them to be better than VH

Currently TM have a special @ $40 a shirt, and I'm keen to try, though their returns policy is not as good as CT, and I'll have to drive 30km one way if I want to avoid postage.

In general both TM and CT have their advocates, when deals are posted but TM and to a lesser extent CT gets a flogging on product review. Understandably people happy with a product are less likely to go online and post a review.

I would your appreciate knowing your personal preference on CT or TM
Or have you tried both, and prefer something else?

Eg a colleague swears by Gazman @$60 but has not tried CT/ TM, but if he tried both and still prefers Gazman then I'd like to know why

Thanks in advance

because I don't have any other ones :)

  • I wonder where CT are shipped from
Do they have a warehouse in Sydney or are we going to cop a 10% rise next month
I like CT but very tempted to try TM once. If returns were free I wouldn't hesitate

Currently TM have a sale $40 each
    CT 3 for 99

    • Both shipped from England.

TM can be bought for $30 each during sales. Tm shirts have thicker cotton, shirts are shorter in length, collar is standard and less formal. TM seem to be easier to iron, though.

Uh oh; hopefully they change that soon; China, Malaysia etc are closer to Oz than UK aren't they?

Haven't honestly seen one for $30 since Feb. Also this is the first time since Feb that I've seen over 90% of their shirts at this price. Unless I've been having boy looks :) and from the looks of it prices will be higher from next month

Thicker cotton is a plus !

        • Thicker cotton is a plus !

          I am not a fan. They're a bit warm.

CT are more breathable and softer, finer cotton.

        • Closer doesn't always mean faster. According to the parcel tracker, my last order from the UK got to Melbourne airport in under 48 hours. It took another four days to get from Melbourne airport to my home in suburban Melbourne.

        • @trongy:

          I have been misunderstood
By closer I meant rather than manufacture in East Asia and then transport to the UK from where we order and then send to Australia from the UK,

I was hoping they send directly to a warehouse in Australia so the transport savings (East Asia to UK and UK to Australia vs east Asia to Australia) would negate the GST expense

In short hopefully the price remains the same :)

CT have speedy shipping imo, compared to sportsdirect; I am still waiting for my Dunlop's from last weekend's deal

        • @smuggler:

Perhaps TM in winter, CT in summer :)

  • CT have a bigger cut compared to TM. I'm on the leaner side so I prefer TM. The non-iron shirts are bomb!

    • Upon reading comments including one from a guy who claimed to be so rotund that he couldn't see his toes but found the regular fit baggy, I ordered the slim fit but found it a bit tight. And I can see my toes, but yes I understand where you are coming from

    • they're pretty comparable tbh in terms of cut, TM seem to be about 1% bigger in the waist, wheareas CT are 1% bigger in the chest.. (looking at the superfitted/super slim style) so i would say both of their most fitted cuts are very alike

  • I got my first CT shirts a couple of years ago. I'm still happy with the price and quality. Now I've got the right fitting, I can order with confidence so I'm not motivated to try TM Lewin.

My ideal sleeve fitting is a bit shorter than the standard length for my shirt size. Different sleeve fittings were previously only available on very expensive shirt ranges, so for most of my life I've had shirts with sleeves that are a bit too long. With CT I finally have the right sleeve length and I never want to go back.

  • I used to be a Rhodes and Beckett man and have probably close to 20 R&N shirts over the years. I really liked these Egyptian cotton shirts but it was a bit pricey at the $120 (at good discount price) per shirt.

In the last year I started to experiment with MJ Bale and TM Lewin shirts (but not CT) and found both MJ and TB fine for my slightly overweight figure (whos kidding, make that fat). I ended up getting a dozen TM Lewin shirts and are currently loving them!

I would recommend that you go into a store like Myer and to a full fitting for whichever shirt suits you best. This includes:

    Shirt Fit:
    - Regular Fit (This if my preferred fit)
    - Slim Fit (What I aspire to)
    - Fitted (What I will never make)
    - Super Fitted (you lucky bastard)

    Collar Size
    - 14.5 to 20in
Please note that you need to get this one spot on. Changes one size up or down will dramatically change how it fits across your chest. If it fits your chest well but may be a little tight on the collar, If probably take that one if you do not wear a tie. The next size up is likely to look really baggy on you. Test it out and see for yourself.

    Sleeve Length
    - 33 to 38in
With regards to sleeve length, just remember that it will shrink up a little and so if you find one length just a tiny bit long, it might actually be perfect for you.

Once you have worked out the best combination for your body type, just order with confidence from places like TM Lewin and at $40 a pop, you cannot go wrong.

  • TM & CT are very similar in terms of quality. Both suitable for busienss attire. I have worn TM all my life but past 6 months made the permanent change to CT.
I buy their non-iron shirts & find the cotton slightly better quality. You also recieve 1cm more in the waist, which is needed ATM!
