Why cannot you do your own research on such a basic question - lazy?

You know that paying for extras is actually more than the savings for prescription glasses?
You're better off buying them with your own savings and not going through PHI extras.
PHI these days pay jack and if they do, it will be a little more than jack LOL

    • Many extras providers I looked at recently pay 200 to 300 on optical annually. Which is easily enough for 2 pairs at specsavers.

      • How much does the extras cost?

        • Prob about 60 a month for me.

        • @Skramit:

          $720 a year for $300 glasses.
          Is Extras worth it?

          @vinni9284:

Dude I don’t buy extras just for optical….

I use dental, physio, osteo etc

Not to mention that’s $60 a month for 4 people in my family all using these services.

        • @Skr9amit:

          Dude.

          Is it worth it?

That is does extras save you money?

          @vinni9284:

Yep as long as we use them.

        • @Skramit:

          Good to hear!

At least there are ppl out there that benefit from this PHI rort :-)
I think the biggest reason for your benefit is that you claim and family.
For a single person, forget about it!

          Cheers

        • @vinni9284:
even for a single person, if they use the benefits it will be worth it. However if they only use for one or two things, not quite worth it. It depends on the person's situation

  • Takes a look at nib, their Core Extras comes with $250 optical limit.

Order three new pairs every six months from zennioptical.com instead. If you find a pair you like order it again in six months and get some prescription sunglasses and get some nerd glasses in case you ever need to go to court. Just keep ordering cheap glasses and throw away the ones you don't like because they don't cost much. The Chinese ladies Zenni hires to grind lenses are just as good as the Chinese ladies any Australian optometrist uses.

Be aware that if you have a particularly strong or unusual prescription there may be a few dollars surcharge per pair. Some of my numbers are getting high so there was a $9 surcharge for me iirc, I can't remember because my last order has lasted so long I haven't needed to order in a while.

Go to specsavers and get a Medicare covered, bulk billed eye test and get your results (script).

Then buy from zenni online. Have been doing this for years.

  • Call iselect and let them compare?

    • Haha they're awful

  • I want multi focal, transition, thin, anti glare, scratch resistent….

Seemingly drives my prices up…. and my fund struggles.

I KNOW I am being ripped off by optometrists in OZ.

Reckon, im going to get a script and find a cheap online OS store.

    • You can get all that for around $200 online depending on your frame

  • We dropped the extras of our health insurance, the dentist is alright, but the physio is pathetic, and you only get basic glasses, if you want any coatings etc that really pushes the price up. We have kids, who may need braces and we will still be thousands of dollars out of pocket.

We now self insure, where we put the money we would have spent on extras into a bank account and use it as needed.

  • I do get prescription sun glasses and reading glasses when eXtras about to reset in June end.
Because I can use two years benefits at once.I pay one part of bill by using Curran year benefits and pay rest with next year benefits in first week of July.So I can buy good multi focal reading glasses and good prescription sun glasses.

  • Choice did a review of online providers, as did their UK equivalent available without subscription

Seems multi focus are more prone to error. Measure an old pair you like for width and depth to give you a guide for a new style. You could get the glasses checked by an optometrist here after you receive them to be sure…
