Lifetime Health Cover- Joining Insurance for One Year for Benefits Then Drop It Again

Hi everyone

I want to have laser eye surgery done by a reputable surgeon( such as Vision Eye Institute) and when I am researching about cost, I found out that BUPA ultimate cover covers the whole cost of laser eye surgery with a waiting period of 12 months. The surgery is about 5-$6000 per eye. I know there are cheaper alternatives, but I want the latest tech with the best surgeon doing it.

I’m in my mid 20s and I also read about the lifetime health cover (LHC). What is not clear to me is that will I pay any LHC loading if I decide to pay 13 months of premiums, have my eye surgery then drop the cover and then apply for health insurance again (say in 3-4 years but before I turn 31)?

If anyone knowledgeable in this area can advise me on this matter will be great.

Thanks In advance.

  • Can the surgery all be done in a short time frame? If so, then if your comparison costs come out with ultimate as the best option, I see nothing wrong with your plan. Just check with Bupa that there will be no out of pockets for your particular specialist.

    • I have a friend that has done it and he told me about it. He would have mention out of pocket cost though if there was any.

LHC does not apply if you obtain PHI before 31.

  • How much is 13 months of their absolute top cover?

  • About $4300

From 1 July 2018, a 3-year waiting period will apply towards Laser Eye Surgery. This only applies to new members joining from 1 July 2018.
