Buying a Gaming Console for My Son, Possibly PlayStation

My son turns 12 on july 1st and has asked for a gaming console
He thinks maybe playstation or xbox not sure
edit: he asked me which one he should get
edit #2 our TV is an ALDI 55", doubt it has 4K

I would have no clue as the last gaming console I have played on would be the Atari 2600 with two wired joysticks and gaming cartidges

I suppose the only thing in common would be that you connect the console to your TV

Could someone please enlighten me as to the minimum things I need to buy to get his set up

I am assuming PS4 rather than XBox, although I would have no clue as to why

I would have to buy I assume the following as a minimum(after reading the deals on the forum)

PS4 Pro which is on special at big W
one extra joystick (or wireless controller as it is not called, as the PS4 would only come with one?)
games obviously
Playstation plus subscription (to get more games among other things)

Anything else I have missed out for the basic setup? Thanks

get him a PC , so he becomes computer literate + learn touch type, through gaming

    • +1

      "learn touch type, through gaming"

As a gamer, I normally prefer to shout at my teammates through my headset.

Just joking, Mavis Beacon taught me how to type.

      • Yep Diablo 1 taught me to type.

        • +1

Chatting to girls on MSN in high school taught me to touch type.

Lol yeah ICQ back in my day. Pretty sure half of it was boys pretending to be girls though - eh - was still practise I guess.

The 'cooler' and more popular console this generation is defenitely the PS4. PS4 sales were roughly double that of the Xbox One at the end of 2017. I agree with commenter above though if you can afford to spring for a PC.

    • Is that worldwide or in Australia? Because I think Japan skews worldwide numbers because the PS4 outsells the Xbox something like 10:1 there.

      • 10-1 is very generous.
The Xbox never cracks 4 digit sales in Japan and a lot of the time not even triple digits (seriously. Look it up) whereas switch and PS4 sales are usually in 5 digits each week.

Xbox stopped releasing official sales numbers around 2015/16 when they realised they weren't going to catch Playstation - instead shifting to "hours played" as their main buzz numbers.

Xbox is estimated to have sold about 38M units Worldwide. Playstation is around 78M and Switch is currently at about 18M. For perspective sake, Wii U was 14M and PS3 and 360 were both at around 80M

Get him the NES or SNES mini.

That's what my little shit is getting when he's old enough. Otherwise I doubt he'll ever be able to appreciate the games I grew up with.

    • Skip the NES mini. And you better be sideloading Chrono Trigger to that SNES mini.

      • I had skipped the NES mini, but after my original NES got stolen, I’ve decided I’m going to get a classic to sit in its place.

  • +1

Sounds like you’ve got it down.

Get the pro and get the 1TB storage one. 500GB is nothing when games have 40GB of files to install.

Maybe get him a game or 2 to get him started as well.

PS4 Pro is recommended if you have a 4K TV. Regular PS4 if not and no intention to upgrade.

Playstation has better exclusives than the Xbox although that is entirely subjective of course. Does depend on what games he likes to play.

  • -3

Xbox! Yes, the PS4 does have better exclusives this generation (which is good for an adult), but the Xbox has backwards compatibility which in this case is the better sell for a 12 year old, because it means access to many hundreds of games, most of which are cheap because they were last generation. Additionally the controllers are leagues better and more comfortable than the Playstation ones, as they always have been. A word of warning, don't let him play Call of Duty and become a CODBRO, you don't want that on your conscience.

  • +26

Might want to get him to check what his friends have. Could suck for him if he is ps4 and all his mates are xbox…

    • +2

^^ This, and this times another 10,000 times

  • Ditto knick007 comments. Try EB games. Many cheaper pre owned games and would be sales on now. My 10 year old is more into his computer which you can get cheap games on Steam platform similar to PS but for PC. However a good gaming pc would cost alot more. My kids had PS1, 2, and 3. Theyd love a ps4 or xbox but we arent paying for one. Games are expensive. You can get sales on the sony shop though pf older games.

  • +11

in my opinion, asking your kids maybe a better option. I know it may break the surprise factor, but with peer influence nowadays it's better to ask which platform he wants and his friends are playing with. Because if you buy ps4 and all of his friends are xbox owner, would be hard to do as many games do not support cross-platform.

and mostly think of it as a family console as well, you might get the enjoyment out of it games like overcooked, etc.

PS: nintendo switch is also not a bad choice as the games are more PG13 friendly.

  • Headset

  • +3

For someone no preference I'd recommend a Nintendo Switch because has some killer games plus it's portable so he can take it on holidays/friends houses etc. He can also use it while others are watching TV, unlike a PS4 or Xbox where he'll be taking over the TV constantly.

But I'd echo other sentiments and just ask him/get him to find out from friends.

  • +1

Is your son playing fortnite already ?

  • Android tablet.

  • thank you all for your replies
we do have a PC and a Mac
I think he may be the only one in his school without a console, and he was being teased about it, therefore he wants a console
It is part of his school requirement that he has an Ipad and yes he gets time to play fornight after his homework

I assume a gaming PC wont be perceived as cool enough by his peers
Also being a big WWE fan I'm assuming he will want WWE 2K18, which if available on PC wont be as good as on console?
Do PCs have joysticks or controllers?

NES/ SNES mini- can look into it for sure

Certainly have to look into Nintendo Switch (honestly haven't heard of that before, although I do remember Parachute, Octopus and Donkey Kong on hand held nintendos, showing my age here)

    • PC are better than consoles in every single way, they can use any controller.

But buy whatever his friends have, otherwise he wont be able to play with them.

      • +7

That's definitely a personal opinion… I own both a gaming PC and pretty much all the main consoles of this generation. I use all of them and do find that PC games have massive advantages in terms of modding, graphical quality, and the ability to take most games on the go on the laptop, but I don't think PC gaming is better 'in every single way', in fact, I think that's pretty much where the advantages end.

There are many areas where PC gaming suffers where console gaming doesn't. For example:
        * Almost all PC games are plagued with stupid DRM. Unless you choose to pirate them, in which case I guess this point doesn't affect you.
        * No real ownership of games on PC. You get a key, it's tied to your account, and if the online service dies, so does your access to those games.
        * Physical copies are getting very very rare. So if you're a game collector, like myself, you're out of luck on PC.
        * With a console game, as long as you have the disc, you can use it on any PS4 or whatever console it's on. No need to care about whether Steam will still exist in 10 years.
        * You can also resell the game or lend it to a friend. It's yours to do with as you please, similar to how you own a book when you buy it.
        * The focus of consoles are also very different than the focus of PC games. Consoles are more arcade-style games with local screen-share multiplayer. Consoles are in that sense almost a culture, where people hang out together and each grab a controller and play together on the same screen. PC gaming is much more solo-focused or remote multiplayer focused. Personally I love the social aspects of console gaming which encourages you to actually go to your friends and play at their place on their TV, it's a completely different social experience.
        * Related to the above is that PCs are simply not the best platform for certain genres of games. For example, I love my fighting games, and PC is simply not the best option with many of those games being delayed by literally years. Mortal Kombat 9, Street Fighter IV, Dead or Alive 5, they all took way too long before a PC release showed up. Same with every Final Fantasy game, XV just got released on PC a couple of months ago, it's been out on consoles in 2016.
        * No need to worry about specs, or compatibility issues or whether you have the right hardware or not. If it's a PS4 game, you know it's going to work perfectly on a PS4 console.
        * Games often get better support on consoles and tend to launch with less bugs as they are better tested on that exact hardware configuration.
        * Great console exclusives, games like Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Uncharted 4, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last of Us, Persona 5, The Last Guardian, . They are all amazing games and they're probably not coming to PC.
        * Consistent controls for your games. Not all gamers like having to switch to a mouse and keyboard at times when their games don't support gamepads properly.
        * Some people work on PCs all day, every day, and simply don't want to go home then game on a PC as well. I'm fine doing it over a weekend, but for me, at the end of my work day, I want to get as far away from computers as possible. Consoles are a great escape as it's a system that only does one thing, and does it well. In that way, it's actually a strength of the system. It's nice to just kick back in a sofa and play on a big screen, which brings me to my final point.
        * Bigger, better screen. Yes, some people have their gaming PC connected to their TV, but most people don't. A console is generally left connected to the TV. In my case a 55 inch OLED TV. While I do game on the 24 inch screen my PC is connected to, the experience is just that much more amazing on the 55 inch OLED.
        * Right now, more console games have HDR support and 4K TVs are already mature in this area. The Asus PG27UQ should change things in the PC gaming space, but right now, I think consoles are the better option for HDR gaming.

In short, it's a very limited view to just outright say PC gaming is always better in every way. There are many reasons why a lot of people prefer gaming on consoles, and that doesn't always have to do with price or the person's intelligence/ability to build a PC.

Different strokes for different folks, I play on both and see the appeal of both, I just don't think one solution will fit everyone.

        • +2

Nice extract. Can you please include complete thesis.

        • +1

@TightBottom: Haha, sorry. It's just that it's such a limited view of the world. Short summary of the above: I think there are benefits to both systems. I don't think either are best at everything.

        • DRM ,able top resell and exclusives are thew only things consoles got for them though PC also has many more exclusives of it's own.

You forgot to mention no Pay to use your own internet (PSplus, Xbox Live), Cheaper games,Many Many locations to purchase games And PC parts,Above 60hz gaming (soon) 144hz 4K HDR gaming, Ability to build your PC to your budget and/or needs or wants High, low end med whatever, Can't forgot it's a computer you can do anything at all (I Run my Plex server on my PC for e.g.).

Plenty of console games haven't worked perfectly on consoles at launch just look at my biggest regret of 2017 Mass effect Andromeda that thing was trash even on console i ended up selling it due to the game freezing at a major mission before i with no way to continue without restarting the entire gam and hoping it doesn't do it gain.

If your don't know what your PC specs are capable of then that's your fault ive never had an issue with compatibility

Im a little confused by "consistent controls" ive never had any issue if i need a mosue i use it if i need a controller i hit the ps button "i use ps4 controller" and im good to go quit making PC sound difficult set thing up correctly and you wont have any issues or messing around. everyone likes different button mapping that's another great thing for PC your not limited to whatever the game developer see's fit which often can be a shitty buttons setup.

Did you really just say a TV is a better screen?
          One word INPUT LAG!

PC game optimization isn't PC's fault it's the game developers.

The things PC does better is by far more than console, maybe "everything" is a little much but in just game play PC offers higher graphical settings, resolutions, refresh rates, Peripheral choice (M/KB,Controllers).

Sorry for any Grammar errors just wanted to reply as i think you're not stating all PC's strengths and giving Console strengths it doesn't have.

        • +1

Excellent summary and well-reasoned. I see the consoles and PC dynamic quite differently now

        • FYI, 'INPUT LAG' is two words… And yes, TVs have more input lag, but you don't need 5ms response times to have a great experience in a game. I used to have the same view on input lag because that's what my friends all told me, but then I got my first console and realised that I couldn't even notice the additional input lag anyway. So in the end, I just don't think it matters as much as people think it does.

I would take the contrast ratio, amazing HDR and size of my OLED TV over my PC monitor any day despite the low input lag of the PC monitor. It's just a better experience.

    • PC can be much better than any console if budget is not an issue. I personally think consoles are 'living room friendly budget gaming equpiment'

A lot of people would recommed PCs because it can be customised and upgraded and can perform better, games generally cheaper. but for your son it might not be as useful since his friends might all play together on the Playstation Network or Xbox Live. If you don't want him to be left out, ask what console his friends play and whether they all play online together and just get the same one.

There's no point getting the same console if the kids don't play online BTW. Also online gaming has a monthly fee for consoles while PC is free (but I think fortnight can be played online without a monthly fee).
PC can use console controllers, xbox controllers works well with windows.

yes wwe2k18 is on pc, I'm not sure what you mean by 'won't be as good as console' what aspect are you referring to?

    • The SNES mini is not exactly the kind of console he would want if it's to be cool in front of his friends. It is an awesome device IF you are nostalgic about 20 year old games (like I am hahaha) and just want to experience them again.

Right now you have two console options… The XBOX and the PlayStation platforms, essentially, Microsoft or Sony. I would recommend the PS4 for a few reasons. Firstly, Microsoft releases all their exclusives on the PC anyway (which of course is also Microsoft-based), as you've mentioned he has a PC already, he won't really benefit from owning an XBOX as well except for XBOX360 backwards compatibility, which is probably not what he has in mind. The PlayStation has A LOT of games that are not on the XBOX or PC at all. It's also the most popular platform. Having said that, if he intends to play with his friends in multiplayer or they want to exchange games between each other, it's best to check which platform his friends use. If unsure, the PS4 is the most popular platform so it's definitely the safer option.

If you can afford it, the PS4 Pro is the best to go for and he'd be the envy of his friends. If not, the standard PS4 is still okay. The switch is also an option and is portable, but it has a limited selection of games, though they are generally more kid-friendly. Again, best to check what his friends have and buy accordingly. Still, I don't think a person could go wrong with a PS4.

  • I do remember Parachute, Octopus and Donkey Kong on hand held nintendos

    Nintendo Game and Watch series

If you still have them, especially with boxes and accessories, then flog them on eBay. You can then get a ps4 and xbox.

Do a completed listings search on ebay for Nintendo game and watch and take a trip down memory lane.

  • Depends on what kinds of games he likes to play. PS4 has better adventure/RPG games. Xbox tends to have better First person shooter games. If he has any specific series he likes, then look up reviews of those games because they sometimes perform differently on different consoles.

  • +2

After I read all the comments, here's what I've come to as someone who owns all the big 3 systems:

If he already has a PC that he can use and which is capable of running all the current games he could want, get the Nintendo Switch. Gives him way more versatile gaming options as it's a completely different concept to the other platforms. It also doesn't require a mandatory install of games like Playstation and Xbox do.

I strongly advise looking into what his friends play as this could be a deal breaker.

The XBOX One S is a really really good option if he has no interest in the PS exclusives. For reference, the main Playstation exclusives are:
    - Uncharted Series (3rd person adventure/shooter)
-The Last of Us (like uncharted but with survival horror elements)
    - Knack/Knack 2 (family friendly 3d platformer/brawler)
    - Wipeout (futuristic racing)
    - Horizon Zero Dawn (open world robot dinosaur hunting)
    - Gravity Rush series (3d platformer with gravity shifting elements. More niche than previous titles)
    - God Of War (hack and slash in previous installments where the newest entry changes up the formula a little bit)
    - Gran Turismo (racing simulator which may or may not be as good as Xbox's Forza series)
    - Heavy Rain/Beyond Two Souls/Detroit Become Human (adventure style story driven games where your choices affect the plot)

The Xbox otherwise has all the same third party games as Playstation (WWE, NBA, FIFA, Call of Duty, Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto, etc) plus the ability to play a lot of Xbox 360 games which are cheap these days. The PS4 does not allow you to play any PS3 titles.

As someone who also prefers to avoid paying for online subscriptions as I only really play online games on my Switch (as it is currently free to play online), I'd say Xbox Live Gold edges out PS Plus for one reason: you actually get to keep the 360 games received during your membership AFTER your subscription ends. Especially if he is a kid who may not finish EVERY game he gets as soon as he gets them, this is a useful feature to keep inind if you don't plan on paying a subscription fee forever.

You mentioned above that he likes WWE. As someone who has been a big WWE fan forever, my advice is as follows:
    1. The switch version of WWE 2K18 is terrible. Avoid at all costs
    2. The PS4 and XB1 versions are identical with the big difference being (and this may be important especially if he has a lot of friends who are into WWE) that the PS4 can only connect 4 controllers at once whereas the XB1 supports up to 6 which actually can come as a big benefit when playing multi-man matches in WWE games.

Finally one more thing to consider that hasn't been mentioned yet is that a lot of online games these days (Rocket League, Fortnite, Mantis Burn Racing and Minecraft come to mind) are starting to support cross platform play. This means that if I have Rocket League on Nintendo Switch, I can play private matches against my friends who have the game on PC and Xbox all at the same time without needing to worry about changing consoles. Playstation does NOT support cross platform play except against PC players in certain titles.

Sorry if this has confused you more. Buying a console in 2018 is not as easy as it once was

    • 'Buying a console in 2018 is not as easy as it once was'

So very true. I bought an XB1 as I really prefer the feel of the controller versus the PS4 controller, though now I've found that many of the games that I want are on PS4 and not XB1. Oy. It's frustrating.

      You monster.

      • That totally slipped my mind… Whoops… For some reason my brain skipped over the fact it was R Rated. I even intentionally left out Until Dawn from this list for that reason

  • If you get a ps4, jump on all the game, console, and accessories deals going on at the moment. Some really really good deals to be had

  • Thanks for all the feedback folks.
    Much appreciated
Lucky we have a long weekend as there is a lot of food for thought.
I have learnt/ will learn a lot from your feedback

WRT online gaming and similar consoles- I don’t think they are doing that yet.
Eg fortnite they play it individually without a class pecking order thank heavens

I did try telling him that most of the games are available on PC, he accepted that, but said his main motivation in getting a console was not to be thought of as uncool. The biggest games in his school are rocket league and fortnight, so for him it doesn’t matter which console as long as it is a console

So I am assuming that there should be a certain amount of future proofing. Any ideas as to what age they start their online leagues against each other. In my time as teenagers we began to show interest in girls, but maybe times have changed ?

On another note I did get into Call of Duty back in 2006 when a friend lent me his CD or was it DVD never got to finish the game as fatherhood got in the way. And now through your comments I’ve realised that PC games don’t come in CDs/ DVDs/ Blurays anymore, but there is beast called Steam :) Feel as if I’ve been living under a rock :)

    • Hopefully even though the wish seems to come from bullying it will be something he enjoys and you can even do together.

He'll get into girls (or boys I dunno), but it's just a phase, he should be back into gaming by his early twenties if he stops at all (not kidding).

      As others say…

PC is better, encourages self reliance, learning, typing, nongame uses.

But with colsole if you buy the same as his friends have they will be able to share lend and swap games (they will get sick of many games within a month or two).

  • Have had both consoles for the kids. One son wanted xbox one wanted PS4. Xbox shit itself got another to replace it and that one croaked it too. PS4 still going strong.

  • Xbox is known as the 'shooter' console. It's made by Microsoft for an American audience so shooters and sport games are really big. That's not to say it's only shooters, or that playstation doesn't have shooters, but playstation has a bit more of something for everyone.

  • If the only reason for him to want a console is to not feel uncool amongst his friends, then I would advocate against it.
You are encouraging him to buckle to peer pressure rather than being the individual he is.

It's uncool not to have a console..
It's uncool not to do drugs.. It's uncool not to be driving, speeding, drag racing..
It's uncool not to have a performance vehicle

When does this end? At the age of 12 he is better off spending more time with you, than to be off in his little gaming world. You are putting a wedge and driving him away from being able to develop the right family values and good habits. He has plenty of time in his teens to be delinquent, why encourage it now?

    • As a child he hasn't asked for much
We have managed to stay away from consoles until now
There is a huge difference between getting a console and doing drugs, drag racing and having a performance vehicle.

I drive a 2006 Subaru Forester, which if it still is in good nick, he will inherit when he can drive.
I am assuming that he will be more mature at 18. Even if he does ask for a performance vehicle, he will be asked to buy it himself.

He has an iPad, he is only allowed to use it for games on weekends.

Sofie, are you a parent? If you are, What would you consider an appropriate age, to get you child a console? Since you seem to think 12 is too early

      • I have 3 girls, 17, 16 & 13, my pride and joy.

I don't believe 12yo is too young to have access to a console, but it's the reason behind why you are getting it is something that I disagree with. He asked for a $500+ item for his 12th birthday, the question is, did he earn it? Does he deserve it? Isnt it too pricey as a birthday present for a 12yo. I find buying a family console very different from buying a console for a 12yo's birthday present.

Do my girls enjoy gaming? Yes, because I have always enjoyed gaming. I have owned every generation of PlayStation since release and every generation of Nintendo since the Wii. So they have had access to a console their entire life. But we play games as a family, or they play as sisters.

I didnt buy a console so they can compete with friends as to who is the cooler kid. My question to you is, would you play with your son as a family, or would the console conveniently occupy him to the point where you free yourself from having to give him your time? I think at the age of 12, it's important to endorse proper family values and morals rather than isolate him to play on his own, and create or prefer a virtual reality world.

Buy him a birthday present … When time is appropriate, buy a family console so he doesn't feel entitled to it … Encourage memories not solitude

        Just my 2 cents.

        • If you've read the other comments, Docian has already stated he limits his child's game time as it is. Having ownership of a console at age 12 is not uncommon and I highly doubt it will lead to escaping into a virtual world. Wanting to fit in is a completely normal part of growing up. Especially entering teenage years.

I also feel that is each individual's decision. You're entitled to your rules on consoles, just as Docian is entitled to theirs.

  • As a person who owns all consoles I’ll summarise it all up.

Nintendo switch - more family friendly, lots of 2-4 player party games and Nintendo exclusives.

Xbox one - a bit of a mix with exclusives and has most popular games that are available on both PS4 and PC. Exclusives include - halo, forza, sea of thieves and much more. Also backwards compatibility.

PlayStation 4 - same as Xbox. Has most of the games that are also available on there as well except for exclusives - knack 1/2, ratchet and clank, horizon zero dawn.

PC. - the one that tops all of them off, more competitive and doesn’t have much of the exclusives. More future proof.

Because he is only 12 I recommend the Nintendo switch. If he likes fortnite it’s up to you to get him a PS4 or Xbox one, but I would probably ask him to tell his friends what consoles they play on.

    • +2

Fortnite most likely coming to Switch this week according to Data miners. If that and rocket league are the big games in said kid's school, switch is a good option apart from the fact WWE 2k18 sucks on it

  • Be aware that most require online subscription to play his mates.

So I am assuming that there should be a certain amount of future proofing.

To a degree. You should look at the console cycle, and given we've had "slim" versions produced, i'd say we're over the bellcurve in terms of lifespan.

Any ideas as to what age they start their online leagues against each other.

As soon as his friends have an internet connection, xbox live, and the same games. My understanding is many kids even play minecraft over the net with eachother. The downside is that you have to be running the same system to talk to one another. I'd 100% vote for the PC, but if all his mates are playing online together, then he will need the same system.

In my time as teenagers we began to show interest in girls, but maybe times have changed ?

Oh that hasnt changed. I think the kids talk more online than physically going out.

    • Minecraft is/will soon be cross play with all platforms (apart from PS4) able to interact without being on one platform. I.e. Switch, Xbox, Windows 10, Pocket Edition.

The pros and cons of PC have already been discussed above and the kid wants a console as they already have a PC and Mac
