I Did Something Stupid - Bloody Government

I recently bought myself a new (to me) car to replace my 2000 Ford Falcon wagon.
Picked it out, got a decent price. Then agreed to get get a couple optional accessories.

I got my Transfer Duty bill today - they calculated duty on the price INCLUDING the cost of the accessories!
I can't believe that I am now paying duty on not just the car cost (which is bad enough) - but on the damn tint and protection too!

(Ok, this is not about how stupid I am to buy dealer accessories - I already know that).

I cannot believe that the government charges transfer duty on top - so if you get a bullbar fitted by the dealer as part of the package - duty on that cost. If you wait until it leaves the yard - no duty.
How stupid.
Argh.

Bet you wish your 2000 falcon wagon was still in your driveway now 😀

That $16.40 used car duty fee as well could have been a few beers in your favour

So next time wait until it leaves the yard. :P

But thanks for the heads up. ;)

Or just buy private, and have them out lesser purchase amount on tranfer paper to save on tax/duty etc.
From my experience, about half the time, the seller offers to do this anyway.

So how much extra duties did you pay?

    • +2

Yes, OP. Tell us how much extra you paid.

      • a whole cigi's worth

        • For the record, if OP is still in WA, duty tax on this vehicle could have been a whole whopping 2.75%… so, I’m curious as well. How much were the add on items? And so we get the right tax bracket, how much was the car?

I just want to know how outraged I should be… $20 worth of outrage or $50 worth?

  • Seperate invoice might have been the solution…

I'm sure you could've squeezed the dealer on the 5% duty. Accessories have a huge mark-up … easiest place to squeeze the dealer.

I mean… that makes sense. Otherwise a dealer would always charge you for the barebones value of the car, and list EVERYTHING ELSE, as optional extras - bigger wheels, heated/cooled seats, premium audio, sunroof, etc etc etc.

"I'll buy a basic chassis, and please add doors, windows, bonut, engine and tyres afterwards thank you."

  • Ok, this is not about how stupid I am to buy dealer accessories

Haha, I was going to point that out.

they calculated duty on the price INCLUDING the cost of the accessories!

Yeah that's kinda how it works, the dealer has to recover stamps / transfer fees relative to the total value of the vehicle exclusing on-roads, but including any accessories that are fitted by the dealer.

The easy way around this is to negotiate a price with the dealer to have those accessories fitted next time you drop the vehicle off for servicing.

Here in VIC stamp duty on a used vehicle is 4.2%, so if you had $1000 worth of accessories you'd have paid an additional $42 dollars in stamp duty, not ideal but also not the end of the world.

Good heads up though I doubt I'll ever buy accessories from dealer.

  • Has been that way for ages

Think yourself lucky you weren't in LCT territory, then it's 33% extra stamp duty on your accessories

  • "I Did Something Stupid - Bloody Government"

Don't worry, our lovely government do stupid things on a daily basis…

  • Isn't it sometimes good to get it at the dealer? I think tints and sensors etc are better before you take from dealer as you can reject the car if they aren't installed well.

    • You can't reject a car because the tint isn't done well. They'll just tell you to pick it up on a different day.

If you approach the tinter/detailer/installer yourself, you'd pay a third to a fifth of what the dealer charges.

It's never better to go for extras through the dealer.

Yes that's what I meant. some people prefer for the works to be done by dealer and form part of the purchase . Some works may damage the car if done poorly and if that was done after purchase, you have less options as you are stuck with the car. I don't know, just saying

  • I’m guessing from your profile, that you are in WA. The tax duty there would be 2.75% (up to $25,000 and increases after that.)

So, if the combined total of your tint and paint protection was $1,000 (typical stealer markup prices) you would have paid an extra $27.50.

Question is, how much did your paint protection and tint cost? You know, just so we can get an idea of just how ripped off by the government you really feel…
