Electricity Tariff Which?

I looking at Origin. and really want a good quite long hot shower. Will a tariff 33 suffice?

  • it will depend on the size of your hot water system. tariff 31 = min 8 hrs/day, tariff 33 = min 16 hrs/day. a small hot water system might run out of hot water on tariff 31. on the other hand, a large hot water system costs more money to run. that is the trade-off to consider. i'm connected to tariff 33 and it only turns off for 2 hours a day in the evening (6-8).

  • so you don't get hot water during 6-8?

no, the hot water system doesn't get electricity during certain periods so during that time the hot water is not being heated (if it needs to be). your hot water tank has a certain capacity and lots of insulation. if you use too much hot water when the electricity is off your supply will gradually go cold. the hot water system also takes time to recover (re-heat the water) after you've used lots of water. if you've got 5 people in the house then you will need a big hot water system, if only 1 or 2 people then you could get away with a small one. the bigger the system the higher the running costs. there are also instantaneous hot water systems available which run on peak tariffs (higher purchase cost, lower running costs). tariff 31 is for bigger tanks which are able to cope with long periods without electricity, tariff 33 is for smaller tanks.

I have to use the hot water shower to determine if I enjoy having hot showers there
