Sydney Day Out for kids - 1 Feb.

I'm taking my son, aged 11, and his friend, 12, to Sydney on Tue Feb 1st, just for the day, courtesy Tiger - an Ozbargain :)

Subject to the weather, thinking of taking the ferry to the zoo from Circular Key for the morning and lunch, then back to North Sydney Swimming Pool for a swim 'under the bridge'.

Any other suggestions on what we might do without breaking the bank?

Hi, at the moment Luna park is having a promotion, if you buy their unlimited ride pass, you'll get free entry to the pool. But I'm not sure when the promo runs out, you might want to give them a call. The ticket prices are a bit expensive (bout $50 for unlimited ride pass ea, cheaper if you have 20% off discount voucher from Ent. Book or the likes), but they also sell $10 Coney Island pass, it's for the indoor area with slides, quite fun, there's this one slide with massive vertical drop that I'm not game enought to try, too scary.

    • Thanks annakira, thats exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for. However Luna Park is closed on the day I am going … good idea though :) +1

      • No worries, sorry to hear that they're not open that day, hope you find other fun/interesting things to do that day :)

If you're planning on going to the zoo and dont have any discount codes, Taronga Zoo has 20% off tickets if you buy them online, valid until 26/03/2011. But the 20% off sale ends on 31st Jan. You must have a Visa or MasterCard, email and the ability to print your tickets when they are emailed to you.

Or, i like going to the Aquarium. I bought myself an Unlimited Adventure pass to get me into 4 of Sydneys attractions till 30th June. Ive been to the aquarium twice, Sydney Wildlife world once and Sydney tower once to watch the sunset (it was amazing!). Im still yet to visit Oceanworld Manly. Sydney Wildlife World and the Aquarium also have the Lego exhibition thing on at the moment.

If you go to Oceanworld Manly at least you've got the beach there for a swim or even Manly Waterworks.

Another option is to watch a movie in the IMAX theatre.

  • Thank you @Kimba88 for going to so much trouble … you have been very helpful.

I don't have any zoo discount codes, so I'll go for the 20% online booking saving you advised. We will squeeze in as much of the Aquarium/Wildlife World/Tower as time permits … and I guess will have to give Manly a miss because of time constraints.

I lived in Sydney on and off for a few years until 8 years ago and, apart from not having been to Wildlife World, you have confirmed I was on the right track in terms of venues … just didn't know how to get the best prices & you've helped out there too.

While in Darling Harbour we might try to squeeze in that beautifully tranquil Chinese Garden too.

    Thanks again @kimba88 & @annakira.

The 3 of us (I adult, 2 kids, one of whom had never been outside Victoria) had a great day out.

Tiger were fine, considering the all up fares were $35 each way … 30-60 mins late in both directions but blamed air traffic congestion in both cities. (Both planes were full enough for cancellations not to be an option.)

Unlimited travel on Sydney's trains, buses & ferries (including airport surcharge) for $68 (& got full value).

Ate our Krispy Kreme donuts while we waited for the train to Circular Quay, and then took the Ferry, with top $$$ views of the Opera House & Bridge) to the zoo (20% off - c$70). Then cable car up to the top of the picturesquely-located zoo.

Kids enjoyed themselves mostly on their own for two hours, while I sipped coke and read the newspaper next to baby elephants playing with their mums, before we saw the wonderful (free) bird show - not to be missed - with the harbour, Opera House and Bridge as the open air auditorium's backdrop.

Hack ;) Photo-opportunity: if you take your own carrots you can feed the giraffes - NOT official policy I'm sure but no "do not feed sign" around there, or staff to interfere at the time :).

Cable-carred down, at the kids request, to get the ferry back to Circular Quay.

Walked to Sydney Tower where we had a leisurely lunch in the buffet … great value … superb views … surprisingly very good food … $99.50 … + my champagne :) & a jug of soft drink for the kids. The oysters and prawns have seldom tasted better :)

Took a quick look at the Queen Victoria Building … then a bus to Circular Quay … ferry to North Sydney swimming pool … very cheap and the kids burnt off some more of their endless energy under the Bridge.

More ferry rides … and we ended up at the Aquarium where the kids particularly enjoyed the feeding Dugongs.

Ferry & train back to the airport.

Up 5am, home 11.30pm - a great day was had by all :)

    • Glad you enjoyed yourself. Sounds like a great time! Very expensive day though.

      • Yes it was a great day and expensive … but it was his one big treat of the holidays … so he deserved it (& it was my birthday present too) - thanks for your help :)
