Samsung Galaxy Battery: S8 Vs S9

Hi everyone,

I currently own a S7 but looking around to upgrade to an S8 or S9. I've done my research and almost made up my mind but I would like to ask owners of these two phones how is the battery going for them?

My S7 battery was amazing at the beginning but now after just over a year of ownership is lasting much less. Are there any S8 owners that had their phones for a while? How would you comment on the battery performance? Same question for S9 owners.

Thanks!

My S9 from 5am to 6pm (door to door) goes from 100% to roughly 60%. I got the phone last week and I'm impressed. I use social media and email throughout the day too so not like I don't use the phone. I'm impressed so far.

    • any bluetooth or GPS use?

    • Second this assessment, 100% to 50% over a similar time period including regular screen on time. Bluetooth to car always and occasional GPS use to check traffic.

  • also it has fast charge so I can get full battery in just over an hour (have 8plus)
I do charge my battery daily (heavy user)
    not Bluetooth, no GPS

I had an S6 edge and had the same issue as you - after 12mths the battery looses charge quite quickly. I've had the S8 plus for a bit over 12mths and my wife just got the S9 plus. From what I understand the S8 and S9 batteries are basically the same. Haven't had a problem with the charge yet so am impressed. The "plus" versions of the phones also have a larger battery (partly why I got them). 3500mAh vs 3000mAh in the standard S8/S9

    • Yeh, I like the battery of the plus but I find the phone too big. So you found that the S8 didn't drop as hard after 12 months like the S6 did? That's good!

I recently just purchased the S9 + and it amazing. I don't have an S8 to compare it with but I do own the S7 Edge.
Right out the box, the phone was at %40. This lasted throughout the day and had enough juice to allow me to download over 100 apps.
Transfer over 64gb of Music, Photo, Phone data like msg and contacts and Videos. After all, this was done I was at %8. The phone
was still alive for me to use google maps and travel for over an hour back home with the phone screen always one and on high GPS.
The GPS on the S9 is the most accurate GPS phone I have seen. Using Find My Phone, it was able to determine that my phone was in my bedroom,
buy looking at the top down satellite view. My old S7 battery would use up %20 just to go for a 30min trip using GPS.

My advice is to just get the S9.

I have a Note 8 and while the battery was not great,it at least was good in the beginning. But 6 months down the line it is ordinary now.So much for the tall claims of the samsung honchos.

Based on its present deterioration,I dont believe it will retain 95% after 2 years either.

  • I have had both the S8 plus and now the S9 Plus, The battery life on the S8 plus, was better. I find my S9 dying a little earlier in the day than my S8. It may be an issue with my S9 but its not enough for me to bother about a warranty claim.. im about 38% by 6PM, and on the s8 was at least 55%

If your S9 plus is very new, it takes a few full recharges before your battery breaks in and gives you full capacity.

Anyway, S7 user here, after 12 mths the battery does indeed not hold as long of a charge, but the difference between then and now isn't so great yet.

I tend not to use quick charger so much to charge my phone, instead I slow-charge it using a USB port on my desktop PC whenever I'm at work.

I'll be replacing it with a new Galaxy S8 Plus this weekend once my purchase from Eglobal arrives.

      • my S7 is shite house after 1.75 years.
i will put it down to too much pokemon go. I've probably killed the cycle count.
I need to charge twice a day at least…

      • Same here, I charge it at my desktop but it's still quite annoying. I'm quite a heavy user as I use it for podcast/bluetooth in the morning, calls and email at work and at the gym.

I'm also looking at the P20 Pro, looks very promising in terms of performance, camera and battery

      • I have been looking into the S9+ battery life as coming from my custom ROM Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 (4k mah) I love battery life. From the little research I have done the consensuses on the Exynos 9810 is Samsung have done a not so great job efficiency wise. The S8 compared to the S9 with the same battery size but older processor actually lasts longer than the S9. I am not impressed but rather disappointed with the battery life I am getting on my S9+. I am just holding onto hope Samsung can release an update that improves the efficiency of 9810 so I can get some nice battery life from my phone.

Have an S8+ for over a year now. Battery lasts all day still, and fast charge which is great. I would go with the S9+ if you can. Minor improvements, and cheaper from Optus on a plan than the S8+

  • Nearly 5.30pm and my S8 is on 70% battery and no charge since early this morning.
GPS seems to drain battery quickly when I have it on or using Google Maps.

Maay as well get S9 if can find good deal.
