Catching a Stray/Feral Cat (Melbourne)

Does anybody know of anyone in Melbourne, preferably SE Suburbs, that can assist with providing a trap to catch what we suspect is a cat (or maybe a fox).

We have spoken with pest control, council, Wildlife and a pet shelter - all of these will come and pick up the animal but only once it is contained. No one seems to be able to assist with actually catching the animal.

It lives in the sub floor of a property I manage and only comes out at night. Has not been seen but is tearing up the yard and crapping all over it.

Sorry. First read as cat burglar.

Why not have a crack at one of these humane, live capture traps and once you've bagged the bugger, you can see whether it's somebody's beloved pet, or just an animal that council can remove.

    • Thank you! Might just have to buy one and put it out, $55 sounds good.

You'll be able to get a trap from your local council free of charge, they'll show you how to set it up if you're not sure.

Just put food down one end, set it and check the following morning, if you catch something just throw a blanket over the cage and call the council to come and pickup.

    • Great advice, thank you.

Define tearing up the yard and crapping all over it? Doesn't sound like normal cat behaviour - even feral cats tend to bury their crap, and they're not diggers

Most likely a fox or something.

    • I know, right? I've not seen anything like it which is why I thought fox too, but I sent the photos to our pest guy (including ones of their turds) and they suggested cat.

It doesn't sound like a fox either. It could actually be a brushy tail, or 4 :)

Councils usually have possum traps for hire.

The faeces aren't possum in nature, and unfortunately whatever it is has actually killed a possum in a very gross way and left it in the yard.

Going to give the council a call now to see if they have any traps to lend us.

        That sounds like a cat

If it's a fox borrow a (big) dog and get it to urinate everywhere.
Might work well for cat too.

Many councils loan or hire out animal traps. You can also hire them at Kennards.

  • I have the exact same problem, my parents fed a cat once and now it lives in my property/yard. Not sure how to get rid of it, spent $30 on sprays from bunnings which did literally nothing.
