Shure SE846 Blue Edition - $888 (Was $1,495) @ Addicted to Audio (Online & in-Store)

740

Just received this email from A2A and it is a great deal. Yes these are not your standard IEMs that come with phones and they do cost a bit, however I think they are the best universal IEMs that you can buy and for this price they are a good deal.

I have a pair myself that I purchased a few years ago and they are my daily IEMs.

Bought one as a high yield investment.

  • I bought a 535,315. The hiss from the shure earphones is killing me and I am sure it is not from the source….maybe shure product are just too sensitive.

I had the pleasure of trying these and other high end headphones in store. Ended up keeping my xiaomi ones because they all sounded so similar. Use the Samsung hearing test tuning software and it makes nearly all headphones sound good, save yourself hundreds if not thousands! I would recommend something that is comfortable

if you have galaxy s8, definitely try this. I did and it definitely makes a difference in improving sound quality

  • Not bad, I've been wanting these for a while now but haven't pulled the trigger.

FYI catch.com.au has these in bronze currently for $899.

    https://www.catch.com.au/product/shure-se846-sound-isolating…

Perhaps they could be coupled with this 10% Catch deal posted earlier to bring down to $810 (if you purchased $900 worth of gift cards). I haven't checked the fine print to see if this works though.

When I do get them I'm probably going to couple them with this bluetooth cable ($159):

    https://www.storedj.com.au//shure-rmce-bt1-bluetooth-enabled…

Also note that these likely to be not subject to GST (grey stock) so may be cheaper now but go up when these online retailers are required to subject to GST. Conversely, if they don't increase their price and you are heading overseas (within 60 days of purchase) and take them with you, you can claim back the GST via the Tourist Refund Scheme (https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/trav/ente/tour/are-you-a-trav…)

    • I haven't read great things about the bluetooth cable.

Only briefly looked into it and something about it only support one format but not the other and not the good format too.

    • I've received a phone call from someone who used the bluetooth cable. It was by far the worst sounding microphone i've ever heard and I'm not exaggerating.
There was so much static going on I couldn't hear what the guy was talking about.

  • How are these compared to Dr Dread

    • +5

I think Dread was a Judge, not a Doctor?

  • Maybe get them reshelled into customs? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/38946

In defence of expensive headphones, I bought a pair of Shure headphones in Japan that looked exactly like this. They only cost $200 though (10 years ago). And my lord they sounded amazing. If you are into sound it's worth it for those who can actually tell the difference. If you can't that's fine, stick with your Beats :D

Into sound. What does that even mean?

Do you hear laurel or yanni with these? :D

Sure make a lightning cable with a built-in dac + amp to solve this problem.

  • Ahhhhhh so0o tempting. I have been keeping one in my ebay watch list for a long time now… Must have been 4-5 years since I got the 425 and in need of some sound clarity.

  • I'm glad I've never heard these. I'd probably like then and buy them. I ended with PSB Speakers M4U 4, they're awesome for the $300 paid.

  • Am i missing something? Cheaper here

    • Shipped from Hong Kong, probably warranty troubles

    • These are blue

    voss water for the ears

  • These are the greatest set of IEMs I've ever owned (and the most expensive).
I bought them for a little less than this during an ebay 20% off sale.

    Pro tips:
    1. I had an issue with my SE535's and SE846's from sure whereby the foam tips which are already attached, won't come off. To solve this, put the headset in a plastic bag, seal it up, put it in the freezer for 15 minutes, then try again.
    2. Use the yellow foam tips as they totally block out any noise at all.
    3. Use the bright (blue) filter in the nozzel. You can swap it using the little metal tool which comes with the headphones. The yellow tips make them sound a little warmer, but you can counteract this with the bright filter.

I've bought other products from this store and they're great to deal with. Much better than Selby Audio.

    stick with your Beats :D

    eww

I bought a 535,315. The hiss from the shure earphones is killing me and I am sure it is not from the source….maybe shure product are just too sensitive.

I own a set of SE535s. The hiss is a little stronger on these 846's. It's because they are low impedance so if you have a crappy source with a high noise floor, you'll hear the hiss. I drive mine with a Dragonfly Red DAC/AMP hooked up to my phone via a USB OTG cable.

@Stix: > Maybe get them reshelled into customs? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/38946

Nope, that's from 2012. I called them late last year and they don't do this for sure anymore.

  • Probably too late, but I hope I can save you guys some money.

These are NOT GOOD. Go try them out at a store if possible. If you did a blind test on these, they sound pretty mediocre. These IEMs have really screwed up low-end phase issues due to their (ironically, patented and highly marketed) physical filter for the woofer. They sound decidedly weird, and not in a good, novel way.

In general, diminishing returns in audio are really brutal, and at the high end, there's a lot of snake oil and mediocrity hiding behind big brand names and high driver counts. I would know because I have tried about 75% of all iems above ~$500, and almost all the noteworthy ones under, and have been actively developing my own IEMs for 2 years (no I'm not ready for mass market).

If you really want to drop this much on IEMs, I'd recommend you go a bit higher and get the real performers (which are, surprisingly usually not a company's marketed flagships). Otherwise, there's some real gems in the ~$400 zone, and even some pleasant surprises ~$60. I can vouch for this ranking https://www.head-fi.org/threads/crinacles-iem-ranking-list-1…

I am not him, but we have collaborated in various activities, and the list is backed up by objective, physical measurements that can show you the exact sound signature, coherence, and timbre throughout the spectrum. No flowery bullshit or shilling in his reviews, like certain Ryan Soos.

    • The trouble is, this is so subjective. However I don't doubt by listening to more IEMs helps. I tried about 10 before selecting on PSB M4U4, they suit my tastes but perhaps not others. Totally agree you must try in store before you buy.

    • My SE315's are great but the left female mmcx socket is damaged. Is it worth repairing? Complexity wise.

What would you recommend around $300 that's good for prog trance and most electronic music?

      • The SE315 are actually pretty good for prog trance.

        • Yeah they are, sadly the mmcx connection is really flakey on the left iem and it looks like a sealed unit. Have to cut it in half to replace socket.

      • It's pretty easy. you just need to heat the shell a bit and 'pry' open the 2 halves, and replace the MMCX. Should be a 15-min job if nothing goes horribly wrong. That said, it's probably pretty rare to come across a DIYer/repairer in Aus.

And I'm sorry mate, can't comment on what's good for electronic/trance music, I've never been into those, hence haven't be auditioning IEMs with those. But I suppose you could look at the ranking in my above comment and investigate individual reviews from what catches your eye.

I can't believe the general prices of this site, a shining example of crap Australian prices and to top it off, online.

  • Man I would love these!! I "upgraded" to the RHA T10i after losing my SE215's… what a mistake that was!

Would never get purchase approval from the CFO though.

  • I bought one last year when ebay sale event and it is working very good and price hardly see dropping massive. Now I bought Westone wireless cable with it

    • Link to the cable, and your thoughts on it?
I bought mine during an ebay sale as well.
