Micro SD cards

My GF's moto g5 had a scandisk ultra 32gb A1 card installed as internal memory, she went on holiday and the SD card screwed up. She could not even get the phone to boot.

When she got back I had to remove the SD card and reset the phone to factory settings before she could use the phone again.

I've tried to format the SD card on the computer and it says it's it can't be formatted as it's corrupted or write protected.

My questions are
is this common ?
And what can I do to stop this happening again (bearing in mind I need to buy another SD card)?

Edit - I should have explained it more clearly, her phone stoped working when she needed it the most, It was just boot looping. She could not have even have called 000 if she needed to.

you should probably buy SANDISK instead of generic knock off SCANDISK

    • I bought it from Officeworks so it seems unlikely it would be counterfeit.

I've spent an hour trying to fix the micro SD card. Running chkdsk, downloading the SD formating tool, using a hard drive petitioning program.

Can't find the receipt so it's going in the bin.

  • SD Card or Micro SD Card. You probably have the write protection switch on.

Why the neg? If you put a micro SD card into an SD card adapter with the side switch on protected mode, and format via a PC you will get a write protected message. Try it out if you don't believe me.

      • Yes sorry micro SD, in a micro SD slot.

  • I think eventually they fail no matter what SD card you have. I've just bought the same one. That was to actually replace the same card which won't copy files off it onto the laptop as back up. Easier to buy a new one. Buy the best one you can afford. Class 10. Sandisk preferable. I keep forgetting to tape the receipt to the old packaging. Suggest that with your replacement one. You could try going back to Officeworks and seeing if they will replace it. They might give you a discount on a replacement one. You can only try.

  • Bring up disk management in windows with the sd card recognised by the pc, delete the partition/partitions and then reformat. If that doesn't work it's dead.

    • Thanks I tried that.
she was more pissed that her phone was non functional while on holiday, It kept rebooting over and over. so she could not even have used it to call 000

  • Just posting an experience here, I once bought a bunch of 32GB microSDs from Woolies.

Opened one, stuck it in my computer, started transferring files.

Short time later (only about ten percent or less of the files transferred), get write protection message. Can't format it, can't do anything with it.

Try again with another card. Same thing again.

Try again with a third card, but format it first, even though it is blank and shouldn't need it.

    Transferring the files works fine!

I don't know if it was just a coincidence, maybe the first two cards I tried were just dodgy, but if you try again with a brand new card, try formatting it before you begin using it.

    • Interesting did you try using some sort of petitioning software (IE windows disk management) to try and fix them or did you just return them ?

      • They're still in a tin in my desk - I wasn't sure what to do with them, and with the discount they were at and the number I got it was still a good deal even with two duds. Do you have an idea of how to fix them?

I stopped using Sandisk cards years ago, had a few problems and also there are way too many Sandisk fakes around. I can verify others and highly recommend Samsung. Evo Plus are the only reliable brand I use exclusively and are similar price to Sandisk.
